I wish I had the ability to do a fraction of this...
Cool. I would guess a lot of pain and probably some broken bones were involved in learning how to do that.
Most definitely. And these videos are not generally done in one take but rather many, many shots. So you should google the outtakes. It's brutal what happens when these guys don't "make it" -
R_Bert told you right. However, the use of surplus military ball ammo (FMJ) is not legal. My personal opinion when hunting deer (I've only neck shot pigs with 5.56) is to use the heaviest expanding bullet available and pay attention to "shot placement". Maybe one of our AR hunters will chime in and offer you more assistance. Dave
Yes, however, I would use the heaviest bullet your AR will stabilize per barrel twist. A lead soft point or ballistic tip

Anyone with a 1:7 twist bolt action could shoot them. Post them for sale
haha, yeah i was pretty well set on the rail :) The place is called National Precision Machining Services in Franklin. They do a small jobs and big jobs and actually have done barrel work (fluting, threading, shortening etc) and machining for Franklin PD and individual like myself. My two packages were ordered today and should drop ship directly to members in the he next day or so.
So it was just done for the sake of cheap brass? Was commercial ammo ever available in 8mm-06?
It was done to be able to shoot them, at all. It was easier to ream the gun to fit 30-06 than to form 8mm brass. Never any ammo commercially available. It's a true wildcat

Apparently it will fit on a Seekins or Spikes billet but not a Mega or Larue, per ARFCOM This one http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=3021 Do you have access to someone with a CMT upper to try? -

In the mock up without the barrel nut, the rail tops don't line up. -
Was this an improvement over the 8mm Mauser?
None that I know of. It was an easy conversion. Just ream to accept 30-06 brass. 8mm ammo wasn't as readily available then as it is even now. My uncle converted a ton of them. All my uncles and a few cousins all have one he converted. Most now feel it is a bastardization of a war relic, but what's done is done. It was a solution to a problem at the time.
I'd never heard of this conversion. Found a few things here. http://www.reloadbench.com/cartridges/w8mm06.html
Yeah it was a popular conversion as there were plenty of post WW2 guns but ammo was scarce.

Lower parts kits and TGO Lowers
Lumber_Jack replied to Hkinator's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Ok, I now have three builds to complete. The Crusader and the two TGO lower/upper bcg sets. What to do. . . what to do . . . Does anyone know how to paint/color the etchings?
There is a thread on ar15.com that details the various methods. The best, I think, is testers model paint thinned a little, applied with a tooth pick and the surface cleaned. I will look for the thread and post a link.
Very very little. it may only need to be one on one side.
Can you mock it up and take a pic. I'm having a hard time picturing what needs to be removed. You'll have to have it refinished after grinding on the upper -
Does anyone load for 8mm-06? My father has a Mauser conversion that was done by his brother in the 60's like most that were converted. All the reloads he has were done by one of two of his brothers sometime in the 80s. I don't think they were loaded for accuracy, as it's sporadic. He has asked me to try some loads and see if we can get it shooting better. In the end it may be the gun (or the smith that worked it) but right now I'd say it's mostly ammo to fault.

Unfortunately that seems to be the only negative review that this scope gets. Wish it was brighter. I am rethinking the possibility if purchasing one now.
Just the way my mind works. I like to avoid "permanent". Especially when I'm just feeling my way. If I were churning out a couple of hundred a day for the military, I might feel different :) I don't handle "supposed to" well, either :D
Just stake it. The only reason I suggested not doing so earlier was because the discussion was on the indecision of end plate. If you are waiting on a new one to arrive or just wanna try it, then fine. But if your set 'for now' then just stake it. YouTube "removing a staked castle nut". At most it takes a whack with a mallet I wouldn't put loctite on the castle nut, but that's just me, others do it.
