Y'all need to relax a bit. There are more than 3 coaches that can win at UT. Gruden was a pipe dream. Gundy wouldn't leave his alma mater, and Strong just got paid 4 million and only beat 1 ranked opponent. Personally I favored Larry Fedora to begin with, but we'll see. Plus maybe they'll talk to Greg Roman, he would be phenomenal.

What kind of buffer tube arrangement you running? I doubt appearance of a "burned" bolt face means anything, I guess mine could be described that way. - OS
Get a range trip together and you can shoot my .300BLK pistol OP, did you look to see if the gas port was was at 12 O'clock on the barrel? Heard of some barrels having misaligned ports. Or as Dolomite suggested, could just be the block not lined up. -
I see lots of Bushcrafters use Pine sap or resin, sometimes dried and crystalized, and they just get it right off of a pine or evergreen tree. Do we have an average amount of trees here in Tennessee that bleed resin like that? All the evergreens I seem to find on the farm are dry as ever, see lots of people start fires with the resin and even make "fatwood" from it.
Well it depends on where you live, Tennessee is a wide state that covers 4 different geological areas that will determine what trees you may find. First off all pine trees have pine sap. It's simply the blood of the tree. It's meant to be on the inside. We a pine tree is wounded by a bug or scrape the tree will bleed and the sap will form a scab. That's what you see on the outside. You can artificially bleed the tree by drilling small holes, just don't drill too many too big or you could kill the tree, but 4-5 small holes about 3-4 inches deep shouldn't hurt. Assuming the tree is 10" +. Small trees just don't drill so deep. East Tennesseeans look for White Pine, large pines that grow in coves and creek bottoms. Most short leaf in the valley and towards the Plateau were killed by the Southern Pine Beetle. You may find a few but they will be scarce. There is also Virgina Pine, grows on poor dry sites, is often crooked and had lots of small golf ball like cones On the plateau there are large quantities of planted Loblolly Pine. Also white pine and Virginia Pine. These are common in middle and west Tn as well. However middle and west Tn will have much more natural pine mixed in with hardwood trees. The likelihood of finding natural pine in hardwood areas is much greater in middle and west Tn, but should be prevalent in the right areas statewide.
As Robert was saying I think it is in my best interest to avoid any confrontation that I can. I certainly don't want to escalate the situation and I will simply walk away rather than doing so. Having the ability to use deadly force is a huge responsibility and I don't want to wind up in that sitution over simple property theft or because of my own anger. Deadly force will be an absolute last choice to protect myself or my family.
the whole premise of yours are Roberts argument is based on the fact that we KNOW the suspect died. I bet you any amount of money if you asked those employees if they would change their actions to bring back the deceased, they would. They didn't intend to kill him as far as we know, it was a result of actions, which I think are justified obviously you all disagree. If I chase a thief off my property, and he has a heart defect, and falls dead in the street, is that different?
I may be wrong about the author but it seems to me that I remember reading in one of Massad Ayoob's books something to the effect that when one is armed and his actions escalate a situation, even if the armed citizen didn't initially start it; that the responsibility for what happens at that point will usually land on him (I'm HIGHLY paraphrasing obviously). I took that to mean that for the most part, you do your best to stay out of situations where you may be forced to pull your weapon to defend yourself if it's later determined that you could have avoided the whole thing by simply not engaging. I know it's real macho and manly to confront a thief but my opinion, my conscious and my training tells me that when you strap on a firearm you also take on the responsibility of avoiding confrontation if at all possible. Protecting stuff seems to me to be about the most unimportant and silliest reason to get into a confrontation where you may have to pull your weapon and/or end up with someone dead. The only thing even more unimportant is going through that when it's not your property and against the expressed policy of the people employing you.
I don't think Massad was referring to stopping theft of your property. More to the act of starting fights in public over things that should be walked away from. This is obviously straying from the original topic as none of them owned the stolen items and none were armed. Again, I feel I understand the full implications of statements made. I like how you automatically assume ego has any factor, I don't feel manly or macho confronting a thief, I'm protecting what's mine. Yes things are replaceable but I'll be damned of I'm gonna just let you walk off with them.
Just keep in mind no matter how good your lawyer is your fate is still determined by a jury that will likely have had any gun enthusiast or carry permit holder carefully excluded from it. You may very well be left with your fate in the hands of a soccer Mom who doesnt know what a Glock is but sees on the news that all the gangbangers carry them so she assumes anyone possessing one must be a bad person. Way too much risk in the jury pool to expose yourself to it if you can avoid it.
So am I to assume you don't carry a gun? Because any self defense has a chance to go before a jury. I fully understand the implications of a trial by jury.
Member had big flap over that about a year ago, was his user name Wyatt Earp? Couldn't find him, banned due to the other issue he had, or changed name? At any rate, unlike some rulings on subsidized public housing, and some states that specifically bar landlords from excluding firearms, TN has no statute that prevents a landlord adding a no-firearms clause in lease, just like no-pets, whatever. So you can scream 2A or whatever all you want, but it won't prevent the sheriff from executing a court ordered eviction notice if it comes to that. - OS
yep that's him. He has been banned. I thought about bringing that up, but didn't really want to put the effort into looking for the thread. every apartment lease I signed in college and after until moving into a house had a clause about "prohibited firearms". One can certainly ask to have that omitted from the lease, and have even heard of a few instances where the Apartment Complex complied. But if you don't read the contract, it very well could be there.
For the use of deadly force you must fear either death or serious bodily injury. "Serious bodily injury" means bodily injury that involves:

A substantial risk of death;
Protracted unconsciousness;
Extreme physical pain;
Protracted or obvious disfigurement;
Protracted loss or substantial impairment of a function of a bodily member, organ or mental faculty; or
A broken bone of a child who is eight (8) years of age or less;
What this really means is if there is any question whatsoever about the use of deadly force your fate will be controlled by lawyers, judges, and juries. Thats the reason i have pointed out in this thread that the manager was the first one to become violent by tackling the shoplifter to the ground. It will be up to the legal system to determine if the shoplifter actions warranted a violent response. The shoplifter only became violent after being tackled by the manager while he was running from the store. I can certainly see a lawyer twisting this to say that the very reason he ran in the first place was he was fearful. The shoplifter's lawyer will claim he was only trying to defend himself from an overly aggressive manager and then two others jumped in and and proceeded to "choke out" his client resulting in his death. Yeah you may think it sucks for a thief to have rights but those rights are there to protect all of us. If this case is as cut and dry as some seem to think why are they waiting on the autopsy report to see if charges are to be filed? And nothing factual has been presented so far, only news reports so everything is simply speculation on my part or anyone elses. I think the smarter decision would have been just to let the guy go instead of trying to physically detain him. The risk cleary isn't worth the reward in this type of case in my opinion. The one thing you can bet on is because of their actions these three employees will likely face a lengthy legal battle in either civil or criminal court that will probably ruin them for life financialy and they will have to live with the fact that their actions led to a man's death. They will have no backing from their employer because they violated company policy. Doesn't seem like its worth all of that to me...
you are taking the luxury of processing this incident over much thought. I'm sure the Manager didn't put too much thought into it before tackling the shoplifter. But as others have said, if you steal from me, chances are high I will chase you down and detain you. Yes, I know I cant shoot you in the back, and don't feel theft warrants death, but I can confront you. If you show force in response, well then I'll just hire a damn good lawyer and fate will be what it will be. I love how this forum thinks only the lawyers for defense can twist and turn things in their clients favor. Yes it will be expensive, but that's a risk we all take when carrying a weapon for self defense.
Being punched in the face doesn't give you the right to take someone else's life accidental or not.
I'm not sure this is valid. Come punch me in the face and my first reaction will be to draw. This guy chose to use his hands(choke hold). If you are being attacked (punched) at what point do you judge your life to be in danger. People die all the time in fights. I don't start them, but if you come at me I will defend myself.

So what calibers do you NOT reload.
Lumber_Jack replied to Tennjed's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I don't reload 9mm or .380. I don't shoot enough .380 to justify buying the dies. 9mm is pretty cheap and just haven't loaded it yet. If I ever get a 9mm carbine I'll probably start to load it. -
How about a custom built direct impingement AR in your desired caliber? http://www.rmwxtreme.com/ He's not much on building websites but he does good gun work. There are some 10mm videos on YouTube I've seen but haven't searched other calibers he's made. Would be worth a phone call or email for sure.

It is very common for apartment leases to prohibit firearms. Hopefully the OP finds a good place.
Well there's no sense trying to be logical about anything concerning the ATF, but that thompson in the picture above has an angled foregrip rather than vertical, and not only that, the angle isn't a whole lot larger than that Magpul AFG. My eye is easily fooled but looks about 45 degrees. So it ought to be a "genuine angled foregrip" and just as legal regardless whether that stock-less thompson has an OAL of less than 26"?
Lester, The Thompson was the original gun that set the precedence for "firearm" classification. It's over 26" over all length, so the Thompson grip is considered "Vertical" I would believe that Thompson grip on an under 26" pistol would still be considered vertical, mainly due to the finger groves that show its intended to be griped with a full fist .
-
I'm just being silly, but ferinstance a grip with an angle of 85 degrees, or even 89 degrees, would be an angled foregrip and NOT a vertical foregrip if one gets real pedantic about it. Perhaps the ATF would not be amused, however.
I assume you're right, the ATF aren't joking types. I think the exemption is for "hand stops" and the Magpul specific AFG has been classified as such. I'm not sure other manufacturers or homemade versions qualify.
I wasn't ascribing intent one way or the other, in fact I assumed it wasn't the intent of the guard to kill the man. Bottom line is that dead is still dead; intent will only impact the severity of the charge and how many years this guard spends in jail.
The assumption was on my part. And the fact that he may have been ending a fight instead of starting one. If he tried to stop the thief and the thief became aggressive and attacked the security guard, then it would be self defense. My main point was that we don't know what happened between shoplifting and death....yet. If the guy ran down a shoplifter from behind and choked him to death, then I'd say he will be charged. But that might not have been what happened. .
-
That doesn't mean the thief needs to die. No one is saying the thief shouldn't be punished.
Making an assumption; I don't believe it was the guards intent to kill the guy. We don't know what aggression the thief showed. Best way to end a fight is to choke out the opponent. Death is always a possible outcome in any fight. I feel the store or its employees has a right to confront the thief. If a fight escalates, then it becomes more than just shoplifting.
