  1. so for nymphing I always start small. 18,20. if those don't work, change, go smaller, go bigger. most often smaller is better. For dry flies use your eyes. I don't fish dries unless I see bugs coming off. Then just try to match the size. Also, it's river-dependent. Some rivers have some large prince nymphs or scuds others don't. If you catch a fish you can pump its stomach and see. Put a tube or turkey baster in their stomach as see what they've been eating. Check the water edges around rocks and see what bugs you can find. Lastly, ask, Some fly-fishers are assholes, and won't tell you but I subscribe to the idea that if we want to maintain the sport we have to teach others to catch fish. So, first stop is the nearest fly shop to the river, they will for sure give you fly advice (buy some flies as a thank you). Second, ask anyone near you on the river.
  2. another note is, I never go to any river without zebra midges size 18,20,22. All colors black, olive, red, etc.
  3. Oh, I'm familiar with the Hiwassee, good spot for sure. My recommendation is to use a strike indicator. Either a small piece of yarn with dry fly dressing or one of the "lighting strike" foam balls (small) are very good. I'd wager you're missing strikes because there is slack in the leader to fly line and it's just taking too long for you to notice. There are lots of purists out there that will say you shouldn't use indicators and learn to nymph without one. There is some good logic here but it can be a frustrating and slow process. If I'm not catching fish I'm not having fun and will tend to go home. If you don't want a "bobber" on your fly line then you can do a "dry fly dropper". My favorite is a big Never-Sink Elk Hair caddis, then tie your nymph or midge off the shank. This way your indicator can also catch fish. It can act as an attractor too, where trout will see the surface fly and hit the nymph below. Another added benefit is you can control the depth of the nymph in the water column. You generally want it close to the bottom but not always, so and indicator will help suspend the fly at the depth you want.
  4. You got it right. Just raise the rod up like lifting it over your head. Often trout suck the fly in but when they realize its hard metal they spit it out. If you pull the line with your non casting hand or pull the rod to the side you'll just assit in pulling the fly out of its mouth. The upward motion will engage the fly in the fish upper lip or side lip before it can be spit out. You'll be surprised how many trout you catch that are hooked through the "nose". Are you using a strike indicator? What body of water are you fishing. Fly selection can often be about where you are.
  5. There have been a thread or two over the years but nothing consistent. This will do. I fly fish, let hear about it.
  6. Yeah I'm growing weary of tapatalk. I get constant notifications of stuff that is completely random. And with TGO new format it's seeming rather un-needed
  7. So I used to use photobucket but its so slow now that its impossible to use. I started using picasaweb and really liked it and had good success with posting links to forums and such, but then Google Photos merged and now it seems impossible to get photos to post from Google Photos to this forum or any other for that matter. Whats a better option. I know here you can post pics directly, but it won't in private message and I need the option on my FJ forum too
  8. .380 Like Dolomite says it beats a sharp stick. I'd carry a full-size 10mm with 3 mags if I thought it was necessary and feasible, but it's not. I have the mindset that you can't prevent everything. If it's my time to go, I'll fight like hell with what I have.
  9. I took, or tried unknowingly, a fully loaded G20 mag. It was in the side water bottle pocket of a messenger bag. Completely forgot. The X-ray agent looked at the bag for what felt like 10 mins while I racked my brains as to what was in there. Apparently since it was under a certain number of rounds all I had to do was surrender it to a local Nashville PD. 1 more round and it would have been the Feds. They gave me the option to take it back to my truck but it was too close to flight time so I just let it go.
  10. I feel the more times you remove a loaded gun from a holster and reholster it, the higher odds of a negligent discharge. So for me, I just leave it in the holster. If someone gets in the house and close enough to me that I don't have time to remove the gun from the holster with both hands, I'm screwed anyway...Just let it happen
  11. After how long does Teamviewer block IPs? I have it for over a year and it hasn't blocked me. Just gives the pop-up about using for personal use if using free version.
  12. Sorry for your loss brother. Hoping y'all find comfort
  13. Yeah I paid $110 for the last bottle I had.
  14. Huh, almost all my favorites are on that list
  15. This is my first venture into this offering. It's awesome. I know....shhhh Honestly since Elmer T is almost non existent now this is every bit as good. A great comparison. Although a bit more cash.
  16. The one in Cookeville is OUTDOOR Junction
  17. I can't make this one, but will try to make the next one. I haven't been to a show anywhere in a really long time so I'm overdue for some old military gear and beef jerky.
  18. This is the first thought I had. Instant traumatizing remorse or the "straw that broke the camels back"? That may never have an answer
  19. Oh man Weller 12. Hope to get a bottle again this year
  20. This one was in the region too, its call a Super Scooper. Came out of Montana. It worked mostly in North Carolina. There is a video on facebook of it scooping out of Fontana Lake. Basically lands on the water scoops up 1600 gallons in 12 seconds and then takes back off.
  21. Regardless of the outcome, setting fire intentionally is Arson, even if all it does is burn woods. Even if they didn't intend to kill people, the result still has implications. Now if they set the fire accidentally in violation of the Governers burn ban, the legal implications could be totally different. I think if they move the trial to Adult Court it will answer a lot of speculations on intent vs accident
  22. I have a YHM M2 and its awsome. Do you have an adjustable gas block? If not, get one and you can turn down the gas and you won't get any "gas in the face" from the .300. I still get it from the 556 but not the .300 Congrats on the new can
  23. Bingo, see they could have written a 2 min plot line and showed them finding some matches a such and really made it believable. Oh well, you know, zombies and all
  24. It seems primers would be the biggest limiting factor. Anyone know of a process for making new primers?
