Help me with a starting point for Garand loads
LngRngShtr replied to Capbyrd's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Ball .30 Cal M-1 (earlier) was a 172 gr. bullet @ 2700 fps. later slowed to 2600 then projectile replaced with 150 to become the M2 A 147-150 gr FMJ with enough IMR 4895 to leave the rifle at an avg. velocity of 2700-2750 @ 78ft. is the M-2 spec with a pressure of 52,000 PSI I have heard of folks using IMR 4064 and Varget also BL-C2 makes a nice deep boom sound and is safe also.... go no slower on burn rate chart than H-380 I run IMR 4895 with a 150FMJ as is designed... works great and shoots pretty darn straight 168-173 SMKs with IMR 4064 is also a nice combination... Exactly,.. and the thought came to me initially while duck hunting last season,.we were out at a blind in Cheetham and the boss wanted to know if I could come in to cover a shift,..did the mental math,..and with knowing where I was it would have taken almost an hour to get to the truck,..let alone the ride back to Nashville...so I reversed the thought to a "rescue attempt" and came up with losing every time with what I had in my bag,.. NEVERMORE I did thank the boss for revealing a hole in my gear though...and have taken steps to as you put it MacG,..beat the reaper... MacG would that be a Thunderbird insert ?? Amazon.com: Butane Lighter Insert for Flip-top Lighters: Health & Personal Care I imagine the butane lasts longer than liquid refill ?? John

Latest 550 para cord project, got tired of monkeys fists and duck lanyards..sorry for the blurry pic. golf anyone ? Slinging.org shows recorded flights of golf balls to 200 meters ! I imagine a .50 Lead roundball would go further... John

Years ago an old friend of the family hearing I was heading to sea to work on Old Wooden boats decided I needed a good knife,.. he was a Korea Vet Navy Corpsman he handed me this and said "Keep it sharp...it will never let you down.." I have since given up my sea travels but when I go hunting it will be coming with me,..and yes it is sharp.. Just need to make a new sheath for it and I will be ready to go. John

Thanks ! I am building up a small kit to take with me when I go hunting/walking and this was on a short list for inclusion.. By good edge are you referring to sharpness or metal quality?,.. my plans are to use my WW 2 vintage Cattaraugus 225Q (pics soon in Knives) sheath knife and build from there.. A recent turkey hunting trip has gotten me back in the "what if this hunt goes wrong" thought process.... I know "use a cell phone.." unless you don't have any reception you are so far out.... John

Anybody have any firsthand use experience with these ? thinking it would take up less room than the standard bar o magnesium with rod ones... Thoughts ? John

It was a Red Ryder BB gun pumped up 12 times.... if he was outside they would have used a sling like this Slinging.org - How to Make a Rockman Sling - Bruno Tosso The truth is that there were only "X" number of folks who left that room that (may in the confusion) know what actually happened,.. and they aren't the kind of folks who talk much...so depending on what went in there we will have a list of possible weapons that killed Osama... My vote is the weapon that did it was...... A well trained highly motivated member of the United States Navy who uses the best tools for the job... John

is there a market for zipper pulls ? I make my own but never thought there would be a demand.. the UTG or Jumbo are looking good to me... Erik88 is that setup for strong side carry or cross draw ? was wondering the difference between it and a Jumbo S for left side carry as far as drawing.. John

The relief in the beavertail is for larger handed shooters who grip very high on the pistol a side effect to high swept beavertails and undercut trigger guards,.. I dremeled mine on my 10mm to have a relief due to it bearing on my 1st. thumb joint ( carpo-metacarpal ) doing this made for a better grip feeling and the 10 seemed to track better in recoil. my cut however doesn't go as high but closer to the front where it joins the frame and only on the "drivers side, port side or left side as you hold it pointing away" Ruger probably did it to give them a distinction in a sea of 1911s and maybe to address this problem... I have found with progressive presses, it helps to "load the press" filling all stations with shells and hopper with powder then cycling through 10 times* or so to get your rhythm sort of a warm up. and then fine tune the powder measure,.. usually I pull the decapping rod for this so I don't leak powder all over and just recycle those 4 or 5 casings set press, cycle with shells 10 times* , check powder charge weight , adjust as needed 231 should meter well so don't see a problem there.....digital scale,.. are you checking under fluorescent lights ? Some scales read funny for some reason under those try an incandescent bulb John * 10 times means as if you are loading 10 rounds ( trying to explain clearer than mud here ),.. 5 shells twice through press but keep the stations full.. then when happy set decapping rod load primer tubes and cycle those shells out as you begin to load. Also try for a smooth consistent press stroke quicker or slower will affect how the measure accepts from the hopper...

3" low/high at 15 yds. as in a 6" vertical string or a 3" vertical string ? it could be a velocity variance,. could be some media not entirely out of the casings ,... could be recoil spring binding causing inconsistent locking up could be a barrel link or slide stop went bad causing vertical play in the 1911 could be something different in your reloading technique... or it could be you were thinking of something ( possibly subconsciously) and your focus may not have been tight as you perceived I have had days where nothing changed and got some weird looking targets and went back a few days later and all was back to "normal" same gun, same ammo, same indor range same targets,..only variable was shooter so it was chalked up to shooter mental prep. or lack of... When I was shooting serious competition I had what I called "control" ammo it was loaded before the beginning of the season say 500 rounds.. and whenever I thought it was something "other than me" a box of 50 came out of the marked ammo can ... and shot and compared to the pre-season test targets.. 10 from a rest 10 slow 10 timed 10 rapid and 10 rest , all but once it was me once it was actually rear sight drifting in the dovetail.. Always hate to admit it is me that caused it but when you eliminate everything else mechanical and environmental you must accept that possibility... John P.S. "old" brass as long as it is in spec. in a 1911 doesn't really affect much,.. but a split casing will cause a flier shake a handful of brass when one rings like a bell look for your split case they sound different. Maybe the top 1% of Bullseye shooters could tell the difference between prepped and unprepped brass in their match 1911's My BarSto 10mm showed no accuracy differences and neither does my BarSto .38Super I never tested my 5" Gold Cup .45 with a Kart NM Bushing though...

Seek out an armorers course,.. or 3 depending on what your department uses and buy tools as you need... Kits are good but I have yet to get one and not have unused tools Brownells sells quality gear so that would also be a starting point.. John

HELP ! mag spring problem with my Mossberg turkey gun.
LngRngShtr replied to Deerbnb's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
if it is the spring,. the mag tube will have to come off... no big deal as it just unscrews from the receiver and a replacement spring isn't hard to find...remove barrel and lock action to the rear, unscrew mag tube...assemble in reverse order just be careful you don't torque the receiver when you do it and all will be well I did one awhile back used 2 wooden blocks and clamped receiver in vice and strap wrenched the tube off gently with steady pressure and some Kroil if it is really stuck I guess you could judiciously use some heat on the front of the receiver but carefully I am sure a gunsmith will be by to give the finer tips I have missed,... you will be up and running in no time... John -
the 9 might be too flared to begin with then the taper crimping isn't reaching it all... just enough flare to start the projectile without shaving sides,..no need to set the projectile down into the case 1/8" less is better also set the taper crimp so the case mouth on a loaded round is is about 3 thou under resized diameter Also depending on the projectile seating them short will make them bulge further back causing a no close situation.. the .30-30 try running them through the resizing die a second time without a decapping rod also as you progress through the steps "drop check" the casing into the chamber ie: resize and deprime,..drop check,.. second resize without the decapping rod,..drop check find out where the hangup starts to occur.. I have in the past found the expander ball on the decapping rod making necks too large,.. .223 now heres the fun one,.. compare 2 fired casings 1 from your Mini and one from your PLR that will show you where your shoulders are setting you may have to reset dies and keep brass separate for those 2 I have that same situation for a couple of .30-06s I used to compete with more an accuracy thing than an operational issue Hope this helps, John

+1 timcalhoun... When I step to the line,go hunting or hear a bump at night I'm the kind of guy who wants to know that if that shot is an 8, I missed the game animal or have to shoot by something or someone to get the bump in the night then it is all me.... and that means CONFIDENCE I train, and do my part there is no question in my mind about my gear or ammo... the target is getting hit and that is an "intangible" that in my opinion makes Wilson or Nighthawk etc. worth the extra... Now I will admit there are several other 'smiths out there that don't command as high a price and will build a fine product that suits the needs however for a "semi custom" call and we ship pistol Wilson, nighthawk etc. has the reputation for that, and it is convenient for those who don't want to or can't wait or wish to build one from scratch to their specs. I have a mental list of my inventory and a scale as to which ones I will and will not be CONFIDENT with in a given situation,.. Some are stock,..some are customized,....the rest are range guns still accurate still reliable but not when results are on the line.. could I answer those problems with any old S&W M-10 ? yep... but I wouldn't feel as confident taking the long or tight shot.. doubt may creep in at the last few seconds but the shot would be made.. for me the price is paid for confidence (reliability accuracy and ergonomics etc.) not because " its a Wilson " or "insert gunsmith or company here" John

the barrel is dropping and the last lug on the slide is slightly catching as it unlocks and travels to the rear, enough to mark but not enough to slow....I have seen a few Bullseye guns look like this, it is purely cosmetic.. you could just polish the barrel where it is exposed as clearancing the slide is alot more work and may affect lockup.. I would guess a slight polish a time or two will provide barrel clearance and it will stop happening... BTW most compensated pistols due to the weight of the comp will mark up like this also ( useless trivia ) John

Kandros Customs Gunworks 38 Super
LngRngShtr replied to DMark's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
DMark,.. Please,.. if you take it to a range where they have USPSA/IPSC matches make sure your ammo stays separate from theirs ,.. it is loaded wayy hotter and wouldn't be good for your stock pistol maybe go so far as to sharpie your brass to verify,.. you can reload their empties but don't shoot any .38Super you don't know where it came from ! as in NO RANGE FINDS ! what so ever... they will grenade that fine pistol you have there as some are loaded way beyond SAAMI specs,. fine for a ramp barreled supported chambered compensated race gun but not a stock 5" gun,.. My 38Super race gun has stayed in the bag on more than one occasion to keep my ammo from finding its way into a stock .38 super... Say I'm practicing a 2 reload 2 drill 6 mags,.. only the 4th. mag spits a round out when it hits the ground and a "stock" super owner inadvertently picks it up... high pressure and unsupported barrel no good will come of that combo... Don't mean to sound harsh on the ammo thing but would hate to see even the grips hurt on that fine 1911 of yours...much less the metalwork.. how does she group ? John -
check for staking,.. if it is heavily staked you may need to *gasp* dremel a touch ,..usually they stake the back plate into the nut to keep them from wandering.. yeah keep them from wandering.... Buffer tube lock nut..? - M4Carbine.net Forums post # 13 of course depending on who mounted it originally they may have used Loc-Tite ( bad move ) John

Your fighting physics DMark,.. equal and opposite reaction.... you get "respect" on both ends... go with a 6" 1911 or a compensator that is efficient and you can bend the law though.. 6" slide (body at rest tends to stay at rest).. or a compensator ( equal and opposite ) against the first equal and opposite... most 10mm loads in the manuals are nothing more than the FBI Lite loads... a chrono and good reloading notes along with a supported barrel will make this round stand up and shout When I run out of Winchester Super Lite,.. I am looking at AutoComp powder to run in my Delta Elite with a 5 1/2" BarSto with a dual port compensator ( yeah its that old think 1990 or so ) I am looking at some 180 XTPs if I ever go handgun hunting with it.. if they weren't so scarce I have 20 rounds of the old Norma 200 gr. FPs also some Cor-Bon 150s @ 1300 and an old Nosler 135 load @ 1450 DoubleTap Ammo posts some interesting numbers also but haven't tried any yet.. Scary thing is ,.. those old Norma loads in this gun shoot flat, fast and accurate,...too bad they are collectors items these days...I think I also have a partial box of the 170-175s somewhere too.. John
