Guidelines Regarding Law Enforcement Threads on TGO
RobertNashville replied to MacGyver's topic in General Chat
I wasn't replying to you or talking about the actions of any moderator (nor was I quoting a moderator). The purpose of my last post was in support of the statement that an administrator had told mav that "no one should be editing other people's posts". I was and am referring to the practice of some members here who take posts (of mine or others), alter what was said (often completely changing the meaning) and then presenting it as a "quote". I suppose some of those doing it think it's funny...I do not. It's dishonest, it's disrespectful and it's childish and it shouldn't be allowed...many of the boards I belong to run software that mechanically doesn't allow it to happen at all. -
Guidelines Regarding Law Enforcement Threads on TGO

Editing other people's posts is somehing that, in my humble opinion, shoudl have a hard rule against the act. For someone to change the wording of a person's post and then present it as a "quote" is beyong childish...it's dishonest; most especially when it's done for no other reason than to diaparrage the person being "quoted". -
High School Textbook Revises Second Amendment
RobertNashville replied to gun sane's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
As I understand it, this is a primer for testing; not a textbook. Now before anyone starts replying in anger to tell me it doesn't make any difference let me say that I'm not happy about it either but if it's not an actual "textbook" then let's not call it that. Perhaps more important is that it pretty well butchered ALL the amendments, not just the 2nd. On a personal not if I might be allowed my soapbox for a moment, I'm frankly stunned that people even still have their children in public schools at this point. Even in TEXAS they tend to be nothing but indoctrination stations to turn kids into good little socialists who believe that government always knows best and it makes me fear for the future of the country (not that this is the only reason). -

I think I understand where you are coming from here but I can also see the view that stories that do or tend to paint police in a bad light are probably not needed here unless they have some local connection. I remember the totally out of control cop in Akron, OH about a year ago that was posted here (and just about everywhere else)...I admit that I was a bit interested because I'm from Ohio and know Akron a bit but I doubt the story had any real relevance to firearms in Tennessee. My other problem with these types of stories is that we hardly ever have all the facts; sometimes even weeks or months after the event and what could seem like a horrible overreaction of a bad cop when the story first breaks could be 100% the opposite once all the facts come out (assuming they ever do) but all those facts rarely get posted because by then we've all moved on to a new story. -
As a general rule, gun control legislation is never truly "dead". More specifically with the current situation; their first attempt early in the year provided with all the info Obama and his cronies needed to know who's arms they have to twist (make promises to) to get their votes next time. Whether they can get anything through the House is questionable but every time we have mass shooting like this (and this on IN DC) I can almost guarantee you that a few who would have voted against such legislation last time would change the their position the next time around. I'd be surprised if we don't see some new "common sense" changes get passed such as universal background checks (gun registration).

It's the job of your quarter-million$ to half-million$ defense team and expert wittnesses to educate the jury (and for you to lear how to testify properly if you take the stand) should you find yourself in that position and if yoy don't have a half-mill$ lying around that's where insurance comes into play. Juries can make the right decision if they get the right evidence. However, "I shoot to kill" posts on an internet forums" such as I've seen here from time to time or putting a "skull" endplage on your Glock may not play well with a jury even with a great defense team...something that folks should consider!

17-Year-Old Arrested For Murder Of Man Captured On Surveillance Tape
RobertNashville replied to a topic in General Chat
I wonder if our soceity will ever wake up and start putting these thugs away for a few decades at a time...seems to me he's already been arrested for enought serious crimes that he ought to be behind bars for quite a few years. -

I'm sure Jackson and Sharpton have better (i.e. more profitable) things to do. I wonder if this thug's FB page has already been sanitized; replaced by pics of him as an innocent, little 12 year old. -
Oh don't worry if this one dies or gets locked as I'm sure GZ will do something soon that will generate another LONG thread and if not him then there are always other possibilities such as… ...the latest antics of "him whose name we do not speak"), or ..."what weapon is best for home defense, a AR15 or a 12GA?", or the classic ..."why do Glocks suck and 1911s rock?" ;)

It would certainly be okay with me (not that I have any say-so)...these threads are a bit tiresome....I mean...what more is there to say?

Any Astronomy Buffs/backyard Astronomers on TGO?
RobertNashville replied to RobertNashville's topic in General Chat
One of the things I'm struggling with is what type and what size scope to buy. I really like the size for price benefits of a Dob But I also want something that I can easily move around since I'm only going to be able to do a fairly small amount of observing from my backyard. I have learned that there is a program conducted by Middle Tennessee State a couple Of evenings each month that is open to the public that I'm going to check out! -
Just thought I'd ask if we have any astronomy buffs/armature astronomers here on TGO? My first exposure to astronomy was as a kid in the early 60's when I talked my dad into buying me a very used refactor that wasn't much but it allowed me to see the moon and a few planets. I was also into model rocketry at the time as well. I got my first taste of a "real" telescope as a freshman in high school. One of my classes was "Earth Science" and a teacher that was, well, just one of those you can't forget. The school had a nice 12" Celestron reflector that I'm sure at the time, was a significant hunk of change for the school system. That was the '69-'70 school year and as some of you may remember, there was total solar eclipse over a good part of North America in March of 1970 - my teacher, his son, myself and another classmate traveled from Ohio to North Carolina in a VW wagon so that we would be in the event path; camping out the night before...I'm sure in today's atmosphere such a trip wit one male teacher and three teen boys could never happen! Anyway, while I never lost interest (I kept my subscription to Sky & Telescope going for several years) life got in the way and thoughts of building a backyard observatory and making great discoveries were replaced by military service and exotic ports of call; learning how to work on what was then fairly sophisticated radar and missile guidance systems. An honorable discharge almost a decade later, a few degrees and an career in accounting/finance/financial modeling using the "new" personal computer at a time when most accounting was done with 13 column pads and mainframe systems filled in the intervening years. Although I've "retired" from two major corporations I still work full-time as the assistant controller of a large manufacturing plant. I don't have any equipment right now but will likely be buying something pretty soon. One of the challenges is that I live pretty close to a metro area with plenty of ambient light pollution so I know that's going to be a challenge until I can find a location where I can get out in the country a bit...I've been far enough away from man-made light sources to have a pretty good idea of what we city/suburban dwellers miss every night! So...anyone here with similar interests or am I just an oddball? Oh wait; maybe I shouldn't have asked that! :)

I think this is one of those many issues where opinions/what people are used to/what they've always done/what they've always been told, etc. etc. are all more important than anything else. I'm very comfortable with an 5.56 rifle as my primary/first choice for home defense in the event that a thug or thugs break into my home. It's my first choice for a variety of what I believe are factual, logical reasons. If someone else is convinced that a shotgun or a pistol is better, so be it!

My opinion, for what it's worth (not much to some here I know!) is that if someone is willing and able to pay the price being asked for something then all you have is two people engaging in a transaction that frankly, isn't the business of anyone else. If including some ammo in the deal garners you a better price than the ammo itself may be worth so what - business do that sort of thing every day and twice on Sundays.
-
I don't know what the OP originally posted about but it's obviously turned into yet another thread of discussion about the ammo shortage, prices, re-sellers, etc. (I suspect that were it not for the ammo shortage and George Zimmerman the post count on this forum would be about 60% less this year than it is)! :) Anyway, I think you hit the bull’s-eye; that this may well be the new normal (or at least close to it). I think the re-sellers who are trying to gouge people will eventually go away and that supply will normalize but I'm suspecting that we'll likely never see prices down to what they were pre-crisis. Just five years ago we could buy gasoline for significantly less than $2/gallon; now we think we are getting a deal if it's less than $3.50/gal and I doubt we'll EVER see prices come down again. We are going to have to adjust to higher ammo prices just like we've adjusted our lives to more expensive gasoline...maybe that means we shoot less, train without ammo, reload our own, or whatever but I think that is what we'll have to do. As you noted...this should be a wake-up call for people to have/keep a substantial supply on hand at all times, I didn't have huge amounts of ammo on hand when this current problem started but I had enough that I’ve had no reason to panic about my supply either. When I go to the range I try to buy as much as I’m planning to shoot and sometimes some extra if they have what I want. We all here ought to be smart enough to know that having adequate stock of anything we consider important to get us through "emergencies" (that always happen) is just the prudent thing to do so I hope folks take this current situation to heart and acts accordingly.

It seems we have a lot of Ohio natives living in the great State of Tennessee! I've never regretted moving here although I do sometimes wonder about the other forks in the road I didn't take when making the decision at 42 to move to a state where I knew precisely one family and had no job and not specific job prospects. God (or someone) must like me...someday I hope I can figure out why! ;)

OK, I know no one else is going to say it......

I agree; based on what I know, which I have to admit is not a great deal, he seems like he would be an excellent choice for president. That's always the problem with potential "great candidates" isn't it? A candidate can sound really good until all their positions start coming out in the open and/or until they start "playing the move to the middle" game because some handler says that's what you have to do to get elected. ;) -

Amen to that! -
Welcome to the forum. I moved here from Ohio (Westerville by way of New Holland, Washington Court House, and Columbus) almost 17 years ago and finally found out what a "damn Yankee" is. ;)

There is no doubt in my mind that Obama will get the chance to put two or more extreme liberal justices on the Supreme Court and there is equally no doubt in my mind that Romney would have at least tried to appoint justices who would be extremely better justices...that simple fact alone should have, in my opinion, been enough for ALL conservatives and libertarians (and all the rest who claim to love the Constitution) to put their cynicism aside and vote for Romney (or at least, show up to vote for SOMEONE!). Yet they didn't. Of course, there were probably better candidates that they Republicans could have given had a candidate run but we only get to chose from those who run! Moreover, that "better candidate" would have had to be the only one running because anytime you have a field of several candidates splitting the vote you'll almost always wind up with the most "middle of road/least objectionable" winning and that's exactly what we got this last cycle (and the cycle before). That said, given the excuses I was bombarded with on this very forum about why "I won't vote for Romney"...a forum of people who claim to hold our freedoms and our Constitution dear, I doubt ANY candidate that the Republicans could have put forward would have gotten the votes needed because too many "conservatives/libertarians" seem to be totally unconcerned with the danger Obama posed and now is. All water over the bridge at this point anyway...as I said above; we are on a course of collapse that will NOT be altered by anyone and as Tanker pointed out, probably shouldn't be altered anyway...I just hope people are ready for what's coming. EDIT: I do agree that the Republicans are "lost in the wilderness" but so are the Democrats and Libertarians - all political parties are looking for one of two things, either how to GET POWER or how to RETAIN POWER once they get it. Everything else is secondary to power regardless of all the rhetoric to the contrary. Further, we now have a plurality of the population who only seem to care about what they can get from the government. -
I suppose this is good news but unless I'm missing something here, the draconian and unconstitutional laws these worthless politicians (and it wasn't just the ones who were recalled) are still on the books are they not?

I thought, perhaps incorrectly, that with "Paint" the fonts were in alphabetical order meaning that the first time you opened the program it would default to the top (Algerian)...once opened it would default to whatever was used last. However, I could be wrong especially since I rarely use Paint. -

Probably "Algerian" if you've never used it or whatever you used last.
