The First Annual Spring Cruise and (clay) Pigeon Shoot! Sponsored by the Middle Tennessee Z Club Middle Tennessee Z Club with much appreciated help from the Montgomery Shooting Complex! CARS, FOOD, FRIENDS & SHOTGUNS; Enough Said! I think all of us are ready for spring and whether you’ve got a special “baby“ sitting in your garage or a daily driver you love and appreciate, I’m sure you are eager for some warm weather and a chance to enjoy your ride - this is a perfect excuse to do just that (yes, this is being put together by the Middle Tennessee Z Club; representing all generations of the Datsun/Nissan Z sports car, but if you love cars and driving and enjoy the camaraderie of some friendly competitive shooting this is an event you’ll enjoy. Whether you are an experienced clay target shooter or have never shot a shotgun and whether you are a guy or a gal, you can have a lot of fun at this event – no one needs to feel “left out†and there will be some basic instruction for those who are totally new to the world of clay pigeon shooting. Of course, you can bring your own shotgun but for those who need it, appropriate shotguns will be available for loan; ammunition and other items available for sale. WHEN: Saturday, April 10, 2010 WHERE: Montgomery County Shooting Complex (Montgomery County Shooting Complex ) PLEASE RSVP! We must have a headcount so the complex can properly prepare for us (and there is a maximum number of shooters that the complex can handle) so please RSVP with your name and telephone number to Bob Armentrout either by email at RBArmentrout1954@hotmail.com or by PM here. SCHEDULE: We’ll meet at Bob Evan’s Restaurant at Opryland/Music City Drive (200 Rudy Circle). If you want to have breakfast I’d plan to arrive no later than 9AM. Otherwise, plan to get there about 9:50AM as we’ll leave Bob Evan’s at 10AM sharp. Cruising for about an hour and a half on back roads to arrive in the Clarksville area at about 11:30. We’ll be at the Clarksville stop (specific spot TBD) from about 11:30 until about 12:15 – this will give you a chance to grab something to eat and/or some gasoline for those who need it as well as a chance for folks to join up with us there. We’ll leave Clarksville about 12:15 and spend about another half-hour traveling to the Montgomery County Shooting Complex )4201 Southside Road; Southside, TN 37171). Our afternoon of shooting will be from about 1PM until about 4PM Trophies will be awarded for “Best Shooter†of the day and for “Least Threatening to Clay Pigeons†(both based on hit/miss count). After our shoot; we’ll head back to Nashville and we’ll stop at a watering hole (location TBD) for food, beverages and likely a few tall stories about how the wind shifted their pigeon and made them miss!). COSTS: Range fee: $5.50 Fee per Round of American Skeet: $5.00 (we’ll likely get in three rounds) Ammunition: You’ll need one box of 25 rounds per round of skeet; they sell on site for $7.00/box or, of course, you can bring your own. Gun Rental: NO CHARGE! The complex is COMPING our gun rental (usually $20/gun) for those who need one. Assuming three rounds of skeet total cost will be approximately $42.00 WEATHER: Hopefully, we'll have a perfect spring day but should the weather not cooperate we will cancel (another reason why to RSVP so the we can update you with any late changes!). Check back here for more updates as they become available and please feel free to ask any questions. Thanks! For background; see: http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/competitive-shooting-sports/34019-want-organize-event-need-some-help-suggestions.html -------------------- ROUTE DETAILS -------------------- Our cruise from Nashville to the shooting complex will be on good, two-lane roads which should provide a pleasant drive. After leaving the metro Nashville area we’ll basically stay on Route 41 to Clarksville then Route 48 as we leave Clarksville until we arrive at the shooting complex. The return cruise back to the Cool Springs area will be a LOT more challenging and interesting with some very enjoyable and exceptional back roads and scenery…some of these roads, especially early in the return trip are a bit rough but nothing to worry about and actually in better shape than some of the roads around The Dragon that we all love so much! Below are the details of the route to/from Starting Point to Montgomery County Shooting Complex: From the parking lot of Bob Evan’s restaurant, turn LEFT out of the parking lot Almost immediately turn RIGHT onto Music Valley Drive Go to the end of the road and, at the traffic light, turn LEFT onto Mcgavock Pike From Mcgavock Pike, turn LEFT and take the onramp to Briley Parkway From Briley Parkway, we’ll take Exit No 14A onto Gallatin Pike/Route 31E Stay on Gallatin Pike until we reach Old Hickory Blvd Turn LEFT onto Old Hickory Blvd (5.5 into the cruise) Shortly after we turn onto Old Hickory Blvd, is Cornerstone Church (on the Right) – if we need to do so, we’ll stop here and wait for anyone who got caught in traffic. Stay on Old Hickory for about 1.4 miles crossing under I-24 and crossing Dickerson Pike. Turn RIGHT onto Whites Creek Pike (6.9 miles into cruise) Turn LEFT onto Eatons Creek Road Turn RIGHT onto Old Clarksville Pike (18 miles into cruise) Turn RIGHT onto Clarksville Pike/route 41 (18.9 miles into cruise) Pass through Pleasant View (CAUTION – SPEED TRAP) (26 miles into cruise) Near Clarksville, turn LEFT onto 41A Bypass (44.5 miles into cruise) We’ll follow 41A Bypass all the way to McGregor Park (on the Left) 52 miles into our cruise. Stopping Point in Clarksville: McGregor Park is part of Clarksville’s Riverwalk area and will be our stopping point in Clarksville and the point at which anyone joining us from the Clarksville area can join up. There are a number of restaurants (some within easy walking distance) and gasoline stations nearby for anyone who wants a quick lunch/needs to fill-up. We should arrive here at about 11:30AM and we’ll plan to leave no later than 12:15PM for the final leg of the cruise to the shooting complex. Clarksville to Shooting Complex: Leaving McGregor Park; we’ll turn RIGHT onto 41A Bypass. Bear slightly RIGHT onto 48/South 13 to follow the river Where 13 and 14 split, bear RIGHT to stay on 48 Shortly after the split, turn LEFT onto Southside Road (63.5 miles into the cruise) We’ll stay on Southside Road until we reach the Montgomery County Shooting Complex (69.4 miles into the cruise). Approximate travel time to our stopping point in Clarksville is 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic and then another 20-30 minutes from Clarksville to the shooting complex. Return Trip - Montgomery County Shooting Complex to Cool Springs Brewery (formerly Guido’s) Leaving the shooting complex; turn LEFT back onto Southside Road Go 1.7 miles and turn LEFT onto Chapel Hill Road Pass through Southside, Tennessee continuing on Chapel Hill Road Turn LEFT onto Bowker Road (8.6 miles into cruise) Bear LEFT (9.6 miles into cruise) Bear RIGHT (11.2 miles into cruise) Turn LEFT onto Highway 49E (15.5 miles into cruise) Turn RIGHT onto River Road/249 S (22.8 miles into cruise) Bear Right onto River Road Pike (37.7 miles into cruise) Where 249/251 meet/split; bear LEFT onto Old Hickory Blvd/251 S (38.7 miles into cruise) NOTE: You will have access to I40 from Old Hickory at about 39.6 miles into the cruise Stay on Old Hickory until we reach Highway 100 Turn LEFT onto Highway 100 (43.4 miles into cruise) Turn RIGHT onto Old Hickory Blvd (44.0 miles into cruise) Turn RIGHT onto Hillsboro Pike/431 South (46.7 miles into cruise) Turn LEFT onto Mack Hatcher Parkway (54.4 miles into cruise) Turn LEFT onto Cool Springs Blvd Turn RIGHT onto Frazier Drive. We’ll end at 600 Frazier Drive (58 miles into cruise) Approximate travel time for the return cruise is 1.5 hours Those who want to go directly home as quickly as possible after the shoot may want to backtrack to I-24. Another option is to cruise together until we have access to I-40 (about 39 miles into the cruise back) at which point, those wanting to get home can break off there. In fact, we have the option as a group to effectively end the “cruise†at I-40 and from there, seek the faster route to our stopping point (Cool Springs Brewery) – the roads beyond the 39 mile mark are nice but not as much fun as the roads up ‘till that point!

If you are talking about where the gun show was located last month than that's a lousy building...$25 would be a more appropriate to what it's worth than $25,000! -

Not a bad idea...we've got a beautiful new taxpayer funded "conference center" (as well as some other facilities) here and I have a feeling that they have a LOT of open dates! -
March 2010 Guns & Gear Expo Canceled
RobertNashville replied to TGO David's topic in Events and Gatherings
I thought Winchester was a bit out of the way although it obviously wasn't "too" far out of the way as I did go and overall, thought it was a very good event and would have gone to the March event in the Winchester location. For what it's worth, my recommendation as you look for a different city/venue is to look for something that is clean and well lighted with a decent parking lot...I know you've got to be concerned with your overhead but one of things I like least about gun shows in general is the type of buildings they are generally located in which seem to be, for lack of a better description, "distressed property". Anything to break that "trend" would be a step in the right direction in my always humble opinion. -
What level of NRA membership are you?
RobertNashville replied to valv6's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I've been an annual member for many years and overall believe it's a worthwhile organization and worthy of support. I've considered upgrading my membership but have two concerns... 1. I support (with my $$$) a number of "pro-Second Amendment) organizations and have only so much money I can donate to such organizations. 2. I am less than enthusiastic about how NRA spends some of its money and resources and, based on item 1, above, am not at all sure that the NRA is an organization to which I should direct any more of my resources than I already do! -

One or more other patrons complained (apparently felt uncomfortable) with the visible weapon. <o></o> It appears that the theater manager asked the patron to conceal his weapon; he refused and was then asked to leave at which pint an off-duty deputy (alleged deputy anyway) told the patron he could either leave or be arrested for trespassing. <o></o> My thoughts are this… <o></o> If the theater didn’t want weapons in its property it should have been posted. Since it was not, Mr. O’Brien had every right to carry open or concealed in the theater. Obviously the theater manager doesn't understand the HCP law in Tennessee. However, once O'Brien was asked to conceal the weapon or leave his only option at that point was to comply or leave or he would have been guilty of criminal trespass. <o></o> The alleged “deputy†should have properly identified himself. Essentially, I believe there is a lot of blame to go around here. <o></o> While I've only had my permit for a short while, I've never carried openly and have no plans to do so...I simply see no good reason to advertise to any/everyone that I have a weapon on me. Further, given the feelings of many people toward guns, it seems more prudent to me to not openly carry and possibly force an unnecessary confrontation or incident like the one in this story... in my opinion, incidents like the one in this story ultimately only hurt, not help, our cause.

Point taken but I was posting here primarily because I haven't done any clay shooting since moving to TN (except on private property) and wasn't sure where it might be possible to organize an event like this; thus I am looking for some expertise from the local "gun community". I did post a generic message on my club forum to gauge interest but it's difficult to know who might actually come until I have some details to share. That said, what someone drives is not that important...while I may organize this for "my club" I think a love/appreciation for cars doesn't need to be limited to one nameplate; likewise an appreciation for the shooting sports. My club revolves around the Nissan "Z" (from the 240Z through today's 370Z) but we generally get alone with everyone!

2nd Amendment March - Monday April 19, 2010

That's great news...I generally stay near Reagan National for a bit less money but this is a great deal to be sure. -
Actually, I didn't mention what brand of sports car my group is involved in but we would probably let you come no matter what you drive. Seriously, I might well turn this into a general "car guys (and girls)" activity rather than just my club anyway so long as we don't get in to any fights about what model of car is "best"!

I want to organize a shotgun/clay event! Gentlemen (and ladies as well), I’m looking for some recommendations that I hope someone here can help me with. One of my passions is sports cars…specifically, I’m very involved in a group here in Nashville dedicated to one particular brand of sports car and I am interested in organizing an activity for us that would likely include a short, fun drive in the mid-morning and then spending most of the rest of the day clay target shooting…this would likely be a relatively small group - how many is difficult to say but let’s assume in the range of 10-15 (we can limit the size if need be). All levels of shotgun experience should be expected - I suspect very little experience with shooting clay targets. Likewise, some of these folks will have their own shotguns they can and would want to use but I’m also sure that others don’t have any at all and would either need to borrow other member’s shotguns and/or rent them from whatever range we use (if that’s even possible). I would like to include some basic firearms safety instruction as well as, perhaps, some basic instructions on shooting clay targets. With regards to the actual shooting, I’m not really looking for full-fledged “trap” or “skeet” shooting; just something basic with the shooter standing in one spot. Although I’m planning on doing some real clay shooting myself this year, I haven’t really done any of that in this area except on private property…so, I’m looking for a location in the Middle Tennessee area (or at least somewhere within a reasonable drive of Nashville) where we can do this. We would be looking at doing this likely on a Saturday (or possibly a Sunday) and sometime in mid to latte march, or April or even very early in May (after about mid-May our guys are usually pretty busy with cruises, car shows, etc. that are already planned). With that said, if necessary, we could even push this into early fall. If anyone has any recommendations on ranges, or who to contact to arrange something like this I’d very much appreciate it. This is very much in the “early stages” of development so I’m very open to suggestions about how to make this happen so if you have any and/or if you need any more information, pleas feel free to ask. Thanks in advance for any help!

I went to the show on Sunday afternoon (quite a crowd there)...having gone to the show the prior weekend at the Fairgrounds in Nashville I thought this show was at least as good if not better. I didn't buy anything but then I wasn't really looking for anything in particular...then again I did find a fellow selling a number of very nice shotguns (including several Brownings) that were in excellent condition and something I am in the market for (just not quite yet ready to buy). All in all, I thought the show was fine.

2nd Amendment March - Monday April 19, 2010
RobertNashville replied to Volzfan's topic in Events and Gatherings
I just wanted to add my $0.02 here. While my schedule could change, I am planning to attend the march in Washington on April 19th and given the current administration, I can't think of a time in my lifetime (which is getting to be quite a stretch of years at this point!) when showing our support for our eroding Second Amendment rights could be more important. I really, really, really, want to encourage you to attend if there is anyway possible...our rights to own and carry firearms is tenuous at best...please be there. I'm hopeful that we can get a caravan together to leave from the Nashville area and perhaps have a couple of stops along the way to pick up people as we go...I'm planning on making the trip to DC on the Sunday prior to the march so if anyone wants to join up with me feel free to PM me here. I realize that not everyone can simple go to DC for a march and I don't mean to step on any toes here but DON'T COUNT ON SOMEONE ELSE SHOWING UP FOR YOU...IF YOU VALUE YOUR FIREARMS AND YOUR RIGHTS THEN BE THERE. -
I've always loved this picture as well and remember it well from my grade school history books (I wonder if they still include it today?). This particular artist is especially meaningful to me - I grew up in Fayette county Ohio and the county court house contains three murals painted by Mr. Willard (The Ohio Channel : Your State : Remarkable Ohio : Marker Details ). I remember touring our court house as a small boy and looking at those murals...knowing the artist had also painted the "Spirit of '76" was always a bit of pride for me.

I doubt that anyone, short of someone working in that office, really knows the answer to that question (and I suspect that those that work in that office are probably forbidden to discuss such things in an internet forum). Based on what I was told while waiting for my HCP as well as what others have related here in the forum, it does sound as if they've been processing a lot more permit requests than normal plus, I was also told that for renewals, they are have recently been required to do a lot more work before they can renew a permit (as compared to before) which has also impacted their workload. Now...I'm not trying to make excuses for them...they have a statutory obligation to meet and it's up to them to meet it but I will say that when I called I was treated well and I don't believe they every lied to me or simply offered excuses. I would try to be patient but I would also suggest that if they do take longer than 90 days without just cause I would contact your State Senator and/or Representative and get them involved.
-
Well...I wasn't raised here; I grew up in Ohio then lived in many places while in the Navy before returning to Ohio for a few years...I was back in Ohio for a while and then decided to live in Tennessee and I've never regretted it. I've nothing against Florida - I go there quite frequently and have family there...it's just never been a place I wanted to live. I agree that those doing the background checks probably are overworked...I had far fewer problems with my HCP overall than I did with the gun purchase that was denied...I'm still hot about that level of stupidity and incompetence and moreover, the outright rudeness from those most of those I spoke with at TCIS.
-
Florida is a nice place to visit but I have to say, I have no desire to live there. That said, I'm almost ashamed to have vented about my little problems...compared to what you've had to go through mine seem incredibly minor! EDIT: After involving State Senator Bill Ketron; I was (today) able to complete the purchase I was denied on December 7th...it's a shame that folks have to get State Senators/Representatives involved simply to get TCIS to DO THEIR JOB! That said, I now have received my HCP and completed the firearms transaction I was denied for bogus reasons.
-
Just to update; I received my HCP in TODAY'S MAIL so my wait is finally over!!!
-
I feel your pain (I'm still waiting as well but hope that will be over soon) but unless you have good reason to think they are jerking your around I would encourage you to be patient and, when you call, try to be as polite as possible. I have nothing but "hearsay" to support my assumption but I suspect all of us that are waiting are simply caught in the middle of too much work and too few staff to handle all the original and renewal permits they are dealing with.
