  1. Robert's Rules of Responsible Gun Ownership for fun, home defense and personal protection (carry): Rule No. 1...when in a gun fight, and/or defending your life or the life of another, any gun of any caliber that you have with you is 1,000% better than an other gun or any other caliber that you don't have with you/available. Rule No. 2...carry the biggest caliber you can comfortably carry, know how to use and that you WILL carry. Rule No. 3...regardless of what type or caliber of firearm you get, TRAIN...TRAIN...TRAIN and then PRACTICE...PRACTICE...PRACTICE. Rule No. 4...read Massad Ayoob's "In The Gravest Extreme" Rule No. 5...at least every couple of years, re-read Massad Ayoob's "In The Gravest Extreme". I have more rules but those are the more important one's for me! One of the great things about choosing a firearm for home/personal protection right now is that there are many, many truly good to great firearms available at reasonable cost in all sorts of calibers/configurations...one of the bad things about choosing a firearm for home/personal protection right now is that there are many, many truly good to great firearms available at reasonable cost in all sorts of calibers/configurations. So...take your time...try lot's of different guns and then pick one you/your wife likes and feels comfortable with. And anyway, nothing is set in stone...if you end op deciding you want a different gun you can always sell the one you have an buy something else!
  2. I think you are correct...the problem is what I voiced above; that being timing. By the time any bill gets voted on, sent to the governor and vetoed there simply won't be time to get in an override vote before the session is over and there is no way in he** that the legislature will come back into session this year because they are all chomping at the bit to get out there and campaign and raise money for their campaigns.
  3. Personally (and I know I'll probably catch a lot of flack for this statement), I don't have a problem with any business posting their business to ban firearms. No "right" is truly a right if it gets to trample the rights of another...an entity (person, business, etc) also has rights including the right to tell me what I can and cannot do on/in their property/business which includes whether I can carry my legally possessed/carried firearm. What makes me angry enough to see red are those cowards who want the state to effectively "post" for them so that they don't have to say where they stand on the issue (does anyone come to mind?). An business that posts (circle with a slash though it or any other method) is automatically telling me that they don't want my business and that they don't care enough about their customers to let them be able to protect themselves so I just move on to the next business that does want my money. I do agree with your original assessment - what we might get out of the legislature this session might truly be worse than doing nothing at all and simply waiting until we have a legislature and a governor who doesn't have their heads up their respective asses.
  4. You might try the Montgomery County Shooting Complex (http://shoottn.org/) it's a great facility and not far from Clarksville...I get up there whenever I can. I don't know if they do or don't allow 50 calibers so I'd just call or email and ask.
  5. I don't disagree nor did I want to imply that we "stop trying" to get something through...just giving my "take" on the likely outcome for this session. Yes; guys like Rayburn need to pay a price (hopefully tens of thousands of dollars in lost business) for their actions and back-room deals. Frankly, what frosts me most about him and those like him is his cowardice in not just being willing to post his properties - I have no stomach (and no money to give to) those who want my business but want to deny me the basic right to protect myself but don't' have the guts to say so.
  6. Gentlemen (and gentle ladies), It is not my intention to rain on the parade here but I would suggest that the likelihood of getting any bill out of the legislature, to the governor, vetoed by the governor (which he certainly do and taking the full 10 business days to do it) and getting an override vote done before the sessions ends for the year is about as likely as BHO to admit that he really isn't an American citizen. Even if by some miracle we get something into law this year, the bill with the best chance of getting through is so muddy that it will likely be overturned just like the last one was and for the same flimsy reason. We are likely going to have to wait until next year for meaningful legislation; after we get a (likely) Republican Governor who probably wont' veto these bills, get a few more decent pro-gun rights conservatives in place in the house AND get a real speaker rather than the idiot Williams we are currently stuck with we'll likely see some real pro-gun legislation coming out of the legislature...Speaker Williams is as much to blame for the lack of progress this year as anyone.
  7. Sure...good idea...but who is going to be the arbiter of what questions as too stupid to be asked?
  8. Is there some harm in knowing (and having some documentation to show) who you transferred a firearm to? I mean, if it's not important to you so be it but I see it as simply a reasonable thing to do.
  9. Is there some problem with people asking a question they don't know the answer to??? I realize that for those who have lived in Tennessee all their lives and owned and sold guns privately many times knows all the answers about what Tennessee requires and doesn't require but not everyone is in that situation...some people are buying and/or selling a firearm for the first time in their lives and others have moved here from states with near communist rules. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the intent of your post but if I might suggest...if you think a questions is stupid and/or don't want to answer; why not just pass on by.
  10. What he said above! While not required (and I'll admit, I don't always do it myself), I think it's a very good idea to have at least some paperwork showing who you transferred (sold, traded, gifted) a firearm to. Firearms tend to be around a VERY long time; longer than most of us will live and once that gun is out of your control you have no idea what happens to it...the person who bought it from you or someone he transferred it to or someone HE transferred to may commit a crime with it or it may get stolen and used in a crime, etc, etc....it's just logical to be able to document how you disposed of a firearm and especially so if you were there original purchaser from a dealer. Just my $0.02!
  11. I wonder how large that April 15th crowd was compared to the 2009 9/11 march (which I was fortunate enough to attend)? It looks like a huge crowd. I wish I could have been there for both the 4/15 Tea Party gathering and the Second Amendment March but as things ended up I just couldn't do either. I am, however, going to be in DC for at leas one event this year, wither the 2010 9/11 March on Washington or Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" event in August or both. I think we all must realize that none of us can do everything but all of us can do something and it's important to DO SOMETHING, even if it's not as much as we would like to do...that's how we'll make a difference; by never giving up and doing what we can and letting others to what they can.
  12. I had a blast at the match I went to in March and I'm planning on being at this one...this stuff is just plain fun but also, I think, while not a substitute for real training, is a way to become familiar with your firearm and the mechanics of actually using it in somewhat "real world" ways rather than just standing in a lane and shooting downrange.
  13. As I said above, I may be totally wrong...I was looking at the TN code yesterday and couldn't find anything on point. What I did find is what I was already sure of which is that if you buy something from an actual business, including one out of state (such as internet sales), the Tennessee resident is supposed to pay the appropriate sales tax to the state of Tennessee on a voluntary basis (which of course never happens which is why most of the states want sales tax collected by sellers when selling on the internet). When it comes to private parties and especially, something "used'; I couldn't find anything about it so it seems pretty likely that there is no "sales tax" on sales between private individuals. I've lived in five different states over my life and, understandably, they all have slightly different laws regarding sales tax so I was likely just remembering another state's requirements!
  14. I'm not 100% certain but I suspect that everyone that buys anything from anyone and didn't pay a sales tax to the seller at the time they purchased it is supposed to voluntarily pay the appropriate sales tax to the state of Tennessee. That said, I would bet there isn't 1 in 10,000 people who do it but you are supposed to do it.
  15. My schedule has changed and at this point, it now looks unlikely that I will be able to attend....all I can do at this point is donate some money to the cause and wish everyone else a successful event!
  16. I'll have to look into it...as I told you, I do like Sig quite a bit although I didn't actually realize they had a 556 pistol...what I had been looking at was their 556 rifle which is an impressive weapon I think. The only thing I noticed with their 556 rifle was that it was a bit "front heavy" (and the magazines seemed sort of crappy)! At the moment, I'm pretty pleased with the SCAR I picked up from you...it was a blast to shoot and, although it's been years since I've shot a rifle (and never a 5.56) I seemed to be pretty accurate with it just using the iron sights. Since one of my reasons for buying the SCAR is to be a primary home defense weapon I'm probably going to sell my almost new Mossberg 930 SPX as I have a Benelli SuperNova tactical that is more than adequate for my "shotgun" home defense needs! If you ever want to invite me to your place to come do some shooting just let me know...maybe I can pick up some fresh eggs while I'm there.
  17. I wish you had brought it! Do you have one you want to sell me?
  18. You know; the Sig 556 was something I was leaning toward as I really do like Sig and I liked the feel of their 556 but then the SCAR cam up. I think the SCAR is more than enough rifle for me at the moment and actually, if I were to buy something else right now it would probably be that Bushmaster Carbon 15 pistol in 556.
  19. I doubt very many here believe the NRA is anything close to a perfect organization; then again, I would suggest that any organization that is run by human beings and has a membership comprised of human beings is ever going to be “perfect†or anything close to it – likewise, except for organizations who’s memberships have been brainwashed, is going to have plenty of dissent on individual issues and how to address those issues. However, just because an organization isn’t perfect or takes positions on issues you wouldn’t take doesn’t mean it should be avoided or dismissed. The Second Amendment; in fact, almost every basic right we hold dear is under constant attack and threats of attack daily – none of us, individually, can do much to counter those attacks so, as incredibly imperfect as ALL of them are, we need organizations like the National Rifle Association, Gun Owners of America, Tennessee Firearms Association, United States Concealed Carry and others to take our collective strength and wage the fight for us an along side of us. Not all of us can afford to belong/support all of these various organizations but I would encourage all of us to do what we can and support those we can in whatever way we can while we still have a chance to do so and while we still have some rights to protect!
  20. I'm really sorry I missed this; just too much going on this past weekend!!! BUT...I WILL be looking for another opportunity!
  21. I did, in fact, purchase my new SCAR (picked it up on Thursday the 1st.) and after doing an initial cleaning and buying an extra magazine and some ammo, took it to the range this past Sunday (April 4th)...what a blast to shoot! Now I can start thinking about what I might want to augment the rifle (primarily for "home defense" use and possible for some three-gun competitions) - I'll probably be coming back here for some advice on that!
  22. This sort of idiocy is the inevitable outcome of having radial/socialists in charge. No one detests animal cruelty more than I do but this nonsense is just beyond ridiculous.
  23. Whether I am able to attend or not is still a bit tentative but I've made my reservations in DC at the original host hotel and I am still planning on going. Right now, I'm planning on leaving Nashville on Saturday evening the 17th and driving straight through...I can't leave any earlier than that because I"m in the TN State Guard and our monthly drill is that Saturday. Planning then on spending that Sunday in DC just doing some sightseeing (I love DC for that reason) then doing the march on Monday and coming back either that night or waiting until Tuesday morning to head back. If that schedule "works" for anyone and would like to form a caravan over (whether hooking up in Nashville or joining along the way) just let me know by PM. Robert
  24. You are the only one from TGO so far...I have 13 RSVPs so far but I won't be surprised if that number doubles by the time the date gets here (it's difficult to get people from my car club to actually say they'll be somewhere even if they know all alone they will be!).
  25. As things worked out, after posting my "Wanted To Buy" thread I was contacted and have decided to buy a brand new in the box SCAR...while the SCAR wasn't in my primary list it is one I had also been seriously considering. I guess now I can start thinking of what goodies I will eventually add to it!
