It's difficult not to fall in love with a 1911 once you've shot one and especially once you own one...the gun hasn't been around for a century without good reason!

I agree...despite the TV shows and movies that portray otherwise, a secured wireless network is simply not that easy to hack, especially for your average thug/robber on the street...plus, for cameras they would have to know the specific IP address of each one (at least I believe that would be the case...if I'm wrong on that someone please correct me!).

A girl I used to date lived in a very nice, small apartment complex almost in the middle of a 1M population city...she took a lot of precautions against break-in and was pretty proficient with a firearm; especially since working in our corporate financed department, late evenings during some days of the month were almost inevitable. Anyway...the apartment next door to here was being completely renovated and, as often seems to be the case during construction, the door was left unlocked...robbers simple opened the door and cut through the wall into her apartment...no noise (and no one was around to hear anyway). Moral of the story is that you can do all you can reasonably do but sometimes the bad guys will get in anyway!

Since I'm buying moreland's FS2000 this week he can't let you shoot his. However, I've been meaning to get over to Frontier Arms to do some shooting which I think is in your neck of the woods so if you want to meet up sometime (and assuming Frontier will let us shoot rifles there) you are more than welcome to come and shoot some rounds with me. I've got a couple of SCARs which I really enjoy shooting and I've been wanting to have an FS2000 for a while but hadn't gotten around to getting one until now...I've looked at them many times and I like the way they feel shouldered which is about as much first hand knowledge I have with them at the moment.

When I eat out, if I'm in a restaurant where I can face the door and have my back to a wall that's always my first choice. Of course, as someone mentioned, in many "nicer' restaurants the doors are simply too far away for that to be possible. That said, I would suggest that simply being aware of your surroundings is probably as if not more important than you seating position! I'm pretty much talking to myself here because I know that 95% of time, if I'm eating out and lone, I've got my mind burred in a book!

I'm sorry to hear about your loss...losing a parent at any time is bad enough; to have it happen just before Christmas just makes it that much more difficult. Good thoughts and prayers for you and your family.

While this is almost a sacrilegious statement to some, I don't buy anything from Wal-Mart and I've found that no lightning bolts have been directed at me and life has gone on! Whenever possible I prefer to give my custom to local businesses who, in my humble opinion, can do far more good with it what all the Wal-Marts and K-Marts and other big box stores in the world put together. Even more so when buying a firearm - when it comes to buying something as serious as a firearm, I prefer to deal with a business who's business IS firearms. Just my $0.02

I appreciate all the replies...I know there are more things I can do even without spending all that much money. I don't want to turn my home into a prison but I do want to do things to deter bad guys as much as possible and, if that doesn't work, to make it as difficult and time consuming as possible for them to get in and steel anything.

I've had very good experiences with Outpost (and a look at my debit card history would support that). I've no idea why your experience was bad but I'd say such an experience could happen any day at any gun store (or any other establishment for that matter)...one thing I decided years ago was that I wasn't going to get bad service/food, etc anyplace without letting someone in management know. After all, they can never correct a problem they don't know they have.

I tend to spend a good bit of money on firearms, especially 1911s and I certainly wouldn't mind having this one but I think I could find better uses for my money than six or seven figures that will be spent to buy this one! Nice gun though and if you buy it, let's get together...I'll let you shoot any or all of mine if you let me shoot that one!!!

Obviously, this is a subject that many people have strong feelings about. You have the "right" to travel...you have the right to peacefully assemble and to peacefully protest...to speak freely. You DO NOT have a right to transportation (be it a car or a plane or a bus) or a free meeting room...you don't have a right to free poster board on which to write your protest slogans nor do you have a right to a platform from which to speak.

I may be wrong but I don't believe either Liberty or Browning buy imported safes.

While there has been no legislation crafted at this point; no one is talking about doing away with the HCP system in Tennessee..."Constitutional Carry" would be in addition to the current system, not a complete replacement of the current system (at least that is what I believe most people would want for the exact same concern you raise).

I suppose what surprises me in all this is how vehemently some folks believe that exercising such as basic human right (i.e. carrying a tool to aid in defending your life) is something that should require permission from a government bureaucrat. I DO believe in training and STRONGLY ENCOURAGE everyone who possesses, let alone carries a firearm to engage themselves in training at every opportunity...I would even add that while not "great", the training" for my HCP was not without some redeeming qualities and I very much enjoyed my instructor. However, while the HCP class resulted in me receiving permission from the state, I can't say it actually made me safer or more competent with a firearm in any measurable way. Bottom line is this...we don't have to have "permission" to travel from state to state to state nor to express our opinions nor to take a breath of air (at least not until Obamacare kicks in in full force)...in fact, I can't think of any other "right" that requires government permission to exercise so why do we need permission to carry a firearm for our own protection??? Until someone can answer that question for me in a reasonable and well thought out way, I have no qualms with "Constitutional Carry" nor should anyone else (in my always humble opinion).

You really should have let it go...that would have been following "responsible posting" guidelines. "Responsible Drinking" is mostly a nice euphemism created by brewers and distillers to sell product while looking as if they are socially responsible...it's also a convenient crutch for those who don't have the will power to not drink at all and/or to have a designated driver if they are going to drink and be in a car afterword. Drinking ANY alcohol and driving OR carrying a firearm is STUPID AND DANGEROUS. If I drink, which I admit isn't often I don't drive PERIOD nor would I strap on a weapon. You may think you aren't "that impaired" but even one drink will affect you and that affect, even if it's slight, may be all that's necessary to cause a lapse in judgment (whether driving or handling a firearm).

Not if you keep calling others or others' opinions "idiocy" you won't.

Taking that logic to the extreme, we would not have locks on our doors or security systems and probably make sure we had absolutely nothing anyone else would ever want to steal from us. There are risks of bad guys doing bad things no matter what we do or don't do...overall, I think making it as difficult as possible for them makes the most sense.

I think that varies from gun show to gun show and while patrons may be "unloaded" I'm not sure that rule applies to vendors...that also assumes that everyone who goes to a gun show follows the rules about being unloaded. And of course as already stated, such rules don't apply to the parking lot in any case...I'd hope that if someone mugged me when getting read to leave that there would be any number of others who are armed and would step in to help. No...were I a criminal and looking for an easy place to steel a gun I don't think a gun show would be an optimal choice.

My Dad passed away on the Saturday night before Father's Day, 2001...I wasn't there to say goodbye both because I live here and my family is in Ohio and because no one was expecting it at that moment (my Dad had been sick with cancer and such for several years before it took him). I've always regretted not being there for his final moments. It still hurts and I suspect it always will. My family has had a tradition of watching a selection of certain Christmas movies the few days leading up to Christmas day...I still watch them (Christmas In Connecticut, White Christmas, Holiday Inn, It's A Wonderful Life)...when I watch them I notice I laugh at the same spots every time...the same spots my Dad and I used to laugh...and I realize that I have the same laugh as my Dad...all the feelings seem to come flooding back. Well, all that to say I know somewhat what you are going through and you have my sincere condolences.

So in your opinion, some people do not have the right to defend themselves, which means you don't believe the right to defend one's own life is actually a right at all, correct? I do believe that there are some people who should not carry a firearm but they should be ABLE to carry one if they so chose (unless by their own actions they've proven themselves unable to handle a firearm safely/put other people in jeopardy and/or they fall into one of the classes of people that society has decided don't have that right such as convicted felons, stalkers, etc.). You see, in my humble opinion, this issue is less about the right to carry a firearm and much more about a person's very basic right to be able to defend their life and the lives of their family/other innocents without the need to have permission from somebody. And, if, indeed the right to defend one's life IS a RIGHT, then permission in the form of a HCP should not be required because RIGHTS don't require permission.

There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about this issue. What has been discussed (and I was there when this question was posed to Haslam) is that those who can already legally posses a handgun be allow to "go armed" without the need of obtaining a permit. Of course, that would ONLY apply in Tennessee. However, we still need the HCP process for those who travel outside of Tennessee and want to be armed while doing so. But there is no reason why we can't have it both ways...there is NO reason why the HCP process in Tennessee needs to be or should be altered in order to also have "Constitutional Carry" for Tennessee residents within Tennessee so if we do get Constitutional Carry here, I'm sure we'll retain the HCP process. I guess this comes down to whether you believe a person really has a RIGHT to carry for his own personal protection (and to protect other innocents) or if it's only a privilege for which you have to have permission from a bureaucrat. While I personally like the concept that someone has had at least some basic instruction and a background check before carrying; I have to come down on this being a RIGHT...as such, I believe people should be able to be armed without the need for a permission slip. As a matter of fact, this very subject of this month's TFA Meeting (Nashville Chapter) which will be held on January 18th. If this subject interests you why not come to the meeting?

Everyone's needs are different...I was going through the same questions as you probably are now (and whether even to buy a safe at all)...I settled on a "middle of the line" Browning safe from the Safe House and I've never regretted it. It was not inexpensive but neither are my weapons or other valuables I keep in it and frankly, with as many weapons as I own I felt I had an societal obligation to make them as secure as I possibly could. The Safe House was GREAT to deal with and wouldn't hesitate to deal with them again and I highly recommend them. I know you are looking for inexpensive and as has been said, a budget safe is better than no safe but as an ultimate goal I'd be planning on moving up in quality as soon as I could.

This is but one more reason why we need to push the legislature to mandate that people can ALWAYS be armed in their vehicle/traveling from location to location, etc. and be able to leave their firearm locked in their vehicle if they are going into an area (employer's building, store, shopping mall, etc.) that is posted against firearms because right now, many, many of us can't carry even to our company parking lot without risk of losing our jobs. In other words, while we preserve the private property rights for the most part, you couldn't be forced to be unarmed just because you needed to park in a parking lot of an employer, etc. that didn't allow firearms withing their actual buildings (I know there is a better way to say what I"m trying to get across but the words aren't working well tonight for some reason!).
