If someone told you that the Earth rotates on its axis would you want a link to that as well? This is at least the third or fourth thread devoted to open carry in just the last couple of weeks (two of which were started by you)...that ought to be some indication of how often this stupid subject is debated here. That aside, you've got access to the "search" function and Google just like everybody else. I don't see what the point of this thread is...what if there are zero examples...what if there are a thousand examples every day...what difference does it truly make? Would thousands of examples of people who open carry being targeted cause you to never open carry again? Do you think that if there are no examples it will convince those who don't now open carry to start doing so? I can tell you with absolute certainly that if no one knows I'm carrying then I will not be targeted by a BG as a potential threat to whatever crime is is/wants to commit because he sees me carrying. I can say with equal certainly that if I'm openly carrying that a BG may target me because he sees me as a potential threat. Whether or not it's EVER happened is irrelevant...the logic is sound. In a state (like Tennessee) where people can open carry, if they don't open carry then it's likely that they just don't want to. Why they don't want to shouldn't matter to anyone but them. I'm getting the impression that many who open carry can't just be happy and open carry...like a newly converted sinner, they seem to have this innate need to convince everyone else that they need to see things the same way (or maybe just convince themselves that they made the right decision to OC). You already can carry openly in Tennessee...why don't you just open carry to your heart's content and let those who don't want to not do so.

Weather does look good so far - let's hope it holds!!! I'm planning to bring either a SCAR or an FS2000 or both (both are 5.56 of course)...also will bring at least one of my 1911s (45 ACP) and likely my Glock 20 (10MM). Anyone who would like to shoot any of those are welcome to do so (although I'd appreciate it if you can use your ammo and/or that I get to shoot one of yours in exchange!). Can anyone clue me in on the "parking" and/or road or lane to get to the range? I'm wondering because I my drive my sports car if the weather is actually decent but of course sports cars don't like rough gravel/dirt roads, etc...if the terrain isn't favorable to a sports car I can always use my SUV.

Despite the fact that I see examples of it all the time, I'm always amazed that so many folks seem to think that the First Amendment right of "free speech" is a guarantee of a platform from which to speak (i.e. an internet forum that the person doesn't own). One IS a right; the other is a privilege.

Thanks for the detailed reply! I doubt my guns are the problem but I suppose that could be...I guess I'll just have to keep practicing and try to figure out what is going on. Maybe also at some point, some good, personal one-on-one instruction wouldn't be bad either!

I don't have any blaze orange (or any orange for that matter). I'm sure we can find some way to identify everyone can't we?

I guess I should have clarified distances...with a handgun, I tend to practice at 25feet and 50feet...in the case I as citing above, I was really talking about 25feet. My logic tells me that I should be more accurate when using sights and taking my time regardless of the distance but that doesn't seem to be the case at an distance...maybe it's jut my logic that is flawed.

Hello everyone...I'm looking for some insight/opinions about something I've been noticing in my target shooting. I've been around guns and been shooting most of my life (mostly hunting from about 8 until I left for the Navy) and then, going to the range and shooting mostly for the fun of it up until about a couple of years ago when 1) I got my HCP and started carrying on a regular basis and 2) I started to make a real effort to improve my marksmanship skills. It's been my experience that when trying to really us the sights on whatever I'm shooting, I find it more natural to close one eye to aim...when I do this I will almost always hit "ok" (center mass, etc)...I realize that closing one eye is NOT the prefered method and that too is something I've been trying to work on. However, of late, I've found I'm actually much more accurate if I don't really use my sights at all but simply point and shoot (both eyes open all the time for this style). I've never really practiced point and shoot techniques until recently...I started shooting that way recently because based on what I've been told/learned from those who are supposed to know, it's a good skill to have. Also understand that I'm not simply talking about accuracy as good or just slightly "better" than when really trying to sight in...I'm talking about MUCH better accuracy overall (including hitting the target bulls eye on occasion which I almost never hit when using my sights). I suppose my questions revolve around whether this is "odd"...whether this is something I should be concerned with...is this just a matter of me needing some real instruction on using my sights better! It seems very oxymoronic to me that I would be more accurate without aiming with sights than I am when I do aim with my sights. Any info/thoughts/etc would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Currently, two of my 1911s are Kimbers, one is my usual carry weapon; a Kimber Custom Pro CDPII in .45ACP and the other is a Kimber Eclipse II, that one is a 10MM. I've owned a couple of others. My CDPII has never had a hick-up and I practice with it regularly. My Exlipse had a major malfunction the second time I took it to the range (a major feeding jam) - it's the worst jam I've ever had in any 1911 and I've had (and have) many. The third time I took it to the range it worked flawlessly. I'm not sure why the feeding malfunction happened but I've ordered some different 10MM ammo for it to see if that makes any difference. I think we can all agree that any weapon made by anybody can fail...I don't think Kimber is any more or less susceptible to problems than any other.

I think you need to re-read some of the post because I don't think it's anywhere near that simple. Frankly, I could not care less what others "think" of me or my gun - I also see no good reason to (metaphorically speaking) stick my choice to carry in other people's faces.

Well...my current car is a 6Sp manual so I can't use it to prove my point. That said, I organize an event for my car club called the "Spring Cruise and (Clay) Pigeon Shoot" which is both a great ride from Nashville area up to Montgomery County Shooting Complex plus a lot of fun showing your expertise (or lack thereof) in trying to hit those GD Birds. When we have a date worked out I'll let you know...we had one attendee last year from TGO!

That may be a result of the universality of the absence of rational thought generally operating in the "anti-gun" end of the spectrum. The opposition to "guns" is rarely if ever about "facts" and "truth" but rather, their agenda (which has nothing to do with facts) for the zealots/activists; or emotion for the average person who is "afraid" of guns (which is often a matter of ignorance more than anything else).

Good question. And...I autocross and have done HPEs with my 7 speed auto with paddle shifters and I AM a driving enthusiast (although my current toy is a 6 speed manual).

I thought when I stressed the word MAY, that my intent was clear but apparently not. I don't know how many fail or if even enough fail that it would amount to a whole percentage point...I do know that some do fail (one in my class did) and I think it's at least in the realm of possibility that some folks may go home at the lunch break and don't finish the course and/or "pass" the course but decide, because of the course, that maybe they really aren't ready/capable/shouldn't carry a firearm and don't actually follow through with getting their HCP. Was my prior post really THAT unclear about what I think of the effectiveness of the background check process of the HCP or are you trying to argue for the sake of arguing??? EDIT: I'll tell you what IS worth the "absurd amount of money" you mention and that is me being able to legally carry in 30+ other states without landing my ass in jail...the little $200 or so cost for the HCP is peanuts compared to a retainer for an attorney (or worse which would be traveling and being unarmed because I can't legally carry in that state sans a TN HCP when my life might depend on it).

Understood and thanks for clarifying. Before I get into my reasons for why I carry, I don't know if OC or CC has all that much to do with what holster you might want. I have both IWB and OWB holsters but how concealed or not concealed they are has almost everything to do with whether I have a garment that covers the weapon or not. I would suggest that whether you do or don't open carry should depend on where you plan to carry...some places/groups of people, etc. are simply more comfortable with the idea of seeing someone with a holstered gun on his hip than are other people...I can almost guarantee you that if you open carry in some places, even though it's perfectly to do so, it will be far more likely that someone is going to freak out/get pissed/call the police/complain to the nearest authority store manger, etc. Other places open carrying won't raise an eyebrow. I almost never open carry for 2 simple reasons. 1. I don't really want people, especially possible "bad guys" (for pretty obvious reasons) to know I'm armed. 2. I think the potential "bad effect" it can have on people's perception outweighs the potential "good effect"; at least most of the time. In general, if people don't know I'm armed, I don't need to be concerned about how they'll react (such as what happened not long ago when a person who was open carrying was made to leave a theater that was not posted against carrying just because someone didn't like the fact that he was there and armed). Despite what some (apparently super-sensitive) folks here want to think, I have no problem with anyone who wants/does open carry. Do what you want and what you feel comfortable with.

Actually, I didn't make my point clear at all if you think what I said in the other thread had anything to do with the subject of open carry. That's what certain people tried to turn it into but was NOT what I was talking about ATALL.

Sounds (and looks) good...I'll be interested in your comments after you've used it a while. I have some pretty expensive OWB holsters for my 1911s but I have to say, my crossbreed is, for me at least, the best I've ever had so far.

I voted concealed because 99.99% of the time that's how I carry but I have open carried on a few occasions. I do wonder, however, why does this make any difference to anybody???? Not trying to be mean to anyone but other than pure curiosity (and I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with being curious), I truly don't see the point of this question that seems to come up in one form or another all the time. It sort of reminds me of the "automatic" vs. "manual" debates on most sport car forums I belong to...they never end!

It might well be that keeping bad guys from carrying guns might have been how they sold the HCP process to the anti-gun zealots in the legislature and anyone with an ounce of common sense and the ability to reason knows how absurd that concept actually is. However, I suspect that there was also some consideration given to trying to keep the truly gun-incompetent from carrying as well and the HCP process may (and I do stress the word may) have some impact on that. I think the price of the process should come down (although nothing we can do about the cost of ammo of course) and I think the process can also be improved substantially.
