There are certainly some very fine firearms out there at reasonable prices than can double as both a "fun" target shooter as well as a carry weapon...the Glocks are certainly one of those. That said, before I bought anything you aren't familiar with I would (as you've already started) rent one and shoot with it and see what you really like. If you were closed to Nashville/Murfreesboro I'd be happy to go to a local range with you and let you shoot some of mine....I'm sure there are some TGO members in your area who would do the same. I guess what I'm saying is; don't rush into a purchase...take your time...figure out what you really like...maybe if what you really like is just a "bit" out of reach then save for a little while and then get what you really want. I've owned as Sig (P220) and it was a truly excellent gun so if that's what you want then get it even if you have to wait a while...also keep your eyes on the firearms classifieds here on TGO; there are always good deals to be had here.

Anytime you want to meet at the Nashville range let me know and I'll try (emphasis on "try) to hit a few pigeons with you...I'm also a member of the Cedar City Gun Club near Lebanon and non-members are welcome any Saturday (I think you can come as my guest anytime but I'd have to check on that). Is there any time that additional training isn't a good idea??? Congratulations to the son (and to the parents as well) for refusing to be a victim...it's too bad this piece of trash is still alive but at least the family is still okay and relatively unharmed. I bet if we look into it that this thug has a long relationship with law enforcement yet was still on the street, free to ply his trade.

I have rifles, shotguns and handguns...I love shooting all of them and each have their place.

I believe (no stats to back me up...just a feeling) that there is someone out there who is only somewhat known but isn't on a lot of the pundit's radar yet that could come in and not only take the nomination but take the election as well (and I too would like to see Sarah on the ticket again or at least utilized in a Republican administration). However, perhaps even more influencal could be the economy, if we still have one by then...a truly bad economy could spell disaster for the Dalai-Bama.

I'm not an attorney nor an expert in the law in any case but I believe for any such item to be transferred it would have to go through the exact same process as if it were a stranger transferring (giving/selling/etc.) to another stranger. I believe the way many families take care of this problem is with a partnership/trust type of vehicle so that the death of one member of the group doesn't impact the other member(s) in that all are equal owners...there are attorneys who specialize in setting up this type of arrangement (and please forgive me if I'm not getting this 100% correct; I went to a seminar on this very topic about a year ago )

I don't think that there is any question that dogs, especially "big" or at least "big sounding" dogs can be a significant deterrent to a would-be robber. The kind of guys that worry me are guys like the desperate meth-head you mention...the ones who just don't care and will break in anyway and hope for the best. Quite a different world we live in these days from what I remember as a kid...we often didn't lock our cars our our back doors and I don't remember anyone getting robbed or their car stolen....that was the stuff of Dragnet and big cities like LA or New York.

I understand your position...I simply do not agree with it and no matter how many different ways you say it you'll never convince me that staying home or voting for a non-competitive candidate is the answer.

I couldn't disagree more...the last thing the Tea Party needs to do is become a third political party. The Tea Party movement's greatest is that it's a grass-roots movement populated by folks with a common interest in seeing America return to common sense. The moment it becomes a "party" it will both lose its effectiveness and likely guarantee that Democrats, and likely the most extreme end of the party, remains in control until the America most of us wants truly doesn't exist anymore except in history books (that haven't been re-written). The best chance for success in restoring our country is in restoring the Republican party to what it CLAIMS it is and believes in (but in many cases hasn't been)...if given a clear and well-defined choice, I believe (at least I'll continue to hope) that a majority of people will vote for freedom and liberty and less government intrusion rather than the socialist, spreading the wealth around pseudo-democracy that the Democrats now stand for. Of course, what do ti know...I'm just an old fart holding onto my guns and my religion but I do hold a degree in Public Administration (similar to Political Science) and I have stayed at many Holiday Inn Express motels.

I've been avoiding this thread somewhat simply because as a certified car nut, talking about $5/gallon gasoline is really depressing. However, it's Friday...nice outdoor shooting weather predicted for tomorrow so I'm in a good enough mood that I think I can talk about it without getting too depressed. Predicting the pump price of gasoline is akin to predicting what interest rates will do...there are so many variables that almost any prediction is as "good" ans any other. I'm reasonably sure we'll see prices hitting or even exceeding $5/gallon by late Spring/early Summer (in other words sometime in June of this year) and I've already decided to curtail a planned 7,000 mile Route 66 trip this year that I had been looking for (this would have been my third trip on the old route) and will wait until next year and hope for the best. Where it goes after that is truly a crap shoot...with Obama and his ilk doing everything they can to curtail drilling and making us even more dependent on foreign oil as well as what seems to be an outright assault on our economy; I, unfortunately, wouldn't be surprised if gasoline hit $10/gallon (assuming it's available in the first place) within the next 12-18 months.

Hence the Tea Party and those who identify with it in spirit...the Republican Party is being pulled back to its roots by conservative/libertarian minded folks. In many cases, the "establishment/big tent" Republicans are doing everything they can to retain power and placate conservatives while giving up nothing. Which side will prevail is very much undecided but, while some here seem to want to give up and surrender, others are pushing on. Maybe we'll fail, maybe we'll won't but the one sure way to fail is to withdraw from the fight..

Generally, as soon as someone refers to me as "dude" I discount anything they have to say by 25%. Anyway, it appears that life is so hopeless for you that the only thing left for you to do is find a cave and hide in it. Of course, by refusing to be part of working toward a solution you are automatically part of the problem.

The only thing clear here is that you are obsessed with the subject of open carry (this is like the third or fourth thread you've either started or have been a major player in in just that past few weeks). The only real emotion being displayed here is coming form you through attacks on anyone who doesn't respond to you in ways that you demand and/or that don't support your likely already formed opinions about open carry. You claim to want "data" instead of opinion while concurrently making wild-ass, baseless assumptions about what is "clear" and who is "against" open carry. I can't help but wonder what "facts" you have to support the position that open carrying does not make one a "first target" in an altercation? Understand that I DEMAND facts...not opinion and certainly not some emotional argument about how great open carry is and you must respond in only the way I want or I'll get wine about it and call you names. ROTFLMAO

Government and politics and especially making significant changes is usually more akin to a crock pot than a microwave. Things are starting to move in the correct (and the "right") direction - you can either chose to do some real work to help keep that going or you can go and hide behind your participle of "voting for the lessor of two evils is still voting for evil" bovine scatology. Assuming that both are truly "evil" I would still rather have the one who is less evil than more while still working for better choices in the future.

If you truly wanted an answer to your "alleged" honest question (rather then simply wanting answers that fit your agenda and/or that you could argue about) you would go out and do the research rather than sitting on your ass and trying to get a small group of people (this forum) to do the work for you. There are likely volumes upon volumes of local, state and federal crime statistics that you could research. Of, if you couldn't find the answer there then go out and conduct your own, REAL research - maybe you could write a book when you are done. There are good, logical, tactical reasons for carrying concealed and not letting a potential attacker know beyond doubt that you are armed...anyone with an ounce of working gray matter can figure that out even if there isn't a single instance of ANYONE being targeted first by a bad guy because the bad guy saw his weapon. Some people disagree and say that making your weapon visible will make you less likely to be a target...that may be true if the bad guy is just some punk looking for an easy grab and run at a convenience store; they may well just go somewhere else. However, that line of reasoning probably doesn't work if the bad guy is actually several bad guys who have for weeks been planning a major robbery and will do their crime whether you are there or not and will if THEY have an ounce of working gray matter, immediately take out any thread they see (including YOU with a visible firearm). So...if you really want to know, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH then come back and enlighten all us mean posters that haven't played by your rules. I suspect, however, that you just want to sit here and argue.
