I think you are confusing metaphor with criticism - I apologize if it came across as criticism. I'm not suggesting you aren't involved in things as I suspect you are very involved. I'm simply saying that if you ("you" in general, not "you" personally) don't like an organization; especially a member-based organization like the NRA; you aren't going to have much impact or power to improve it by not being part of it - they aren't going to listen to nor should hey listen to people who aren't members. We can either wait for the NRA to "do what is right" and then get involved or we can be part of influencing it so that it does do what is right; I think the latter approach is more productive. I hope people also remember that there organizations that support 2nd Amendment rights other than the NRA and, perhaps, even better than the NRA - I hope people don't dismiss all of them just because they may not like/agree with the NRA!

When a government or an organization is not doing what we think is "right" or what we think it "should" be doing, we can either chose to be part of changing it or ignore it. When you see your country heading for the cliff of self-destruction and socialism; it's very, very tempting to look for a bunch of land out in the proverbial "middle of no where"; build a self-contained existence and hope you can hang out/hang on until you meet your maker OR you can chose to get involved...vote...write...call...donate...run for office...all of the above and try to move things in the right direction. When an organization like the NRA isn't doing what you think it should be doing...taking the stands you think it should be taking...you can complain and refuse to join (and be, rightly, ignored) OR you can become a member, vote, and try to push it and its leaders in the right direction. I doubt anyone here thinks the NRA is a perfect organization...I know I don't. I also don't think the USCCA, GOA, or TFA are perfect organizations but I belong to all of them and others. You can't change imperfect organizations by standing outside of their office building and yelling up at the boardroom...you change them by belonging and influencing who gets to be in leadership and perhaps, even getting as seat at the table in the boardroom. That's not compromising...that's taking action. Further, I'd say the results of this poll is evidence that, even among the firearm enthusiasts/2nd Amendment supporters, there is a lot of action/education needed. I mean think about it; we have almost 30 years of evidence to show that background checks do nothing substantial to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals yet even on this board, a fairly significant majority are in favor of them! I find that as incredible as I do sad. Organizations like the NRA are, I think, the best way to keep the firearms freedom we have and to regain what we've lost...there is power in banding together rather than going it alone.

I went ahead and ordered mine today...should have it by Friday. The reviews I've read seem to agree with what's been said here...good story (although there was room for improvement); graphics good but not exactly cutting-edge. Single game play is good but where this game seems to shine is in multiplayer mode. I'm looking forward to getting my copy!

I'm sorry for your loss...my Dad passed in 2001 and I suspect that my Mom, who's healt seems to be declining quickly, will be joining him soon.

I'm planning to buy it...haven't looked to see what formats it's available for. I've spent almost all my time since last November with CoD Black Ops; in my fourth prestige level at the moment (I play almost exclusively online).

These stories seem to be consistent with the apparent overall decline in society. Sometimes I wonder if these trends are real or if they just appear to be real by that I mean, is it truly "worse" out there now than, say, 50 or 75 years ago or is it largely perception? I don't know the answer to that...just sort of thinking out loud. Whether a real, long-term trend or not; there was a time in my young adult life when we only carried guns to go hunting/shooting...it just didn't seem necessary for self-protection...now, whether I'm being paranoid or just prudent, I don't want to go anywhere without a gun handy.

Agreed...we don't and hopefully never will punish someone or take away someone's rights because of what they "might" do. There is no "law" that will EVER stop a criminal from plying their chosen profession and that includes "background checks". The only answer to criminals obtaining/having/using guns; in fact the best answer to "crime" of any kind and that's to make the "cost" of crime so obnoxiously high that few people will chose to be a criminal. Severe, swift and CERTAIN punishment can be a huge deterrent to a would-be criminal. But today, punishment is not severe, is rarely swift and almost as rarely certain to happen EVEN when the criminals are caught! Those who commit any serious crime should be in jail for a VERY long time...so long that by the time they get out they will be too old to be a danger to anyone...we can't be totally draconian about it; felons that are for non-violent (white collar) crime and such can perhaps be treated differently but most criminals should be put in jail for decades or for life, not given a 30 years sentence and then out on parole after 5 or 10 years. Unfortunately, such actions are too harsh for many people to stomach and/or they are unwilling to spend the money necessary to keep these animals locked up.

I have a Ruger LCR in 38 and with Crimson Trace grips...I love that little gun as it's absolutely perfect for a pocket pistol when you don't want to or can't carry something larger. Were I buying one today I'd probably buy the new LCR in 367 Mag but at the ranges you are likely to use such a weapon, I think the 38+p is more than sufficient.

From all the replies; it does sound as if zeroing at 50 Yards may be best. I actually have two SCARS; one will have an ACOG which I've purchased but haven't mounted yet...this SCAR is set up specifically for HD although should I ever need to take it outside (for Zombie killing and such ) then zeroing at 50 yards might be best since, as you say, the difference shooting at something 10 yards or less away is probably not significant anyway. I do love the SCAR...great fun to shoot. I can't really compare it to an AR because I've never owned one...my prior experience with rifles before buying the SCARS we with M14s and M1s and that was a LONG time ago! Oh and yes...I keep electronic hearing protection by the SCAR when I have it out of my safe...I figure that the hearing protection plus the amplification of low-level noises offers a lot of advantages. I also keep TAP ammo loaded at home. One of the reasons I went with a .223./5.56 for HD is because with the right ammo, it seems to offer both better impact on a bad guy and less over penetration risk than any handgun ammo.

I need a little expertise as I'm almost a complete novice when it comes to sights and especially zeroing a sight. I have a SCAR (light .223/5.56) that is 100% for home defense purposes. I purchased a used EOTech 512 from a forum member to use with it and I have a good bore sight for it. Longest distance within my house if roughly 30 feet/10 yards. My question is, should I zero the EOTech so that is precisely on target at approximately 10 yards or should I zero it at the more normal 50 or 100 yards? My common sense tells me that I should zero it at about the distance I am most likely going to need to use it but I'm honestly not sure. I'm also thinking that sing the bore sight, I should be able to adjust my EOTech to precisely match the laser dot from the bore at 10 yards and be very close to being on target at that distance. Perhaps this is all "moot" since at 10 yards I ought to be able to hit a man-sized target with out any sighting system save for the iron sights on the weapon but any insight would be appreciated! I too find it a bit disheartening that the poll is so close. If near 50% of a predominantly pro-firearms crowd is willing to accept "background checks" what chance do we have of preventing more draconian impediments to firearm ownership? Is this acceptance of background checks by the enthusiast community a result of familiarity with the this system that we've had since the 80's? If so, who is to say that in another 10 or 20 years all private sales of firearms will be outlawed and accepted as "normal" by enthusiasts? Whether our rights are taken away in one legislative action or one "minor" law at a time; the end result will be the same.

With regards to Jared Loughner, I believe he purchased his Glock illegally - while he did "pass" his background check, we know he used drugs and it's been reported that he lied on his application form when it came to that question...had he told the truth the sale would have been denied. The problem is, criminals including those who intend to become criminals, are as unlikely to tell the truth as they are to obey a "gun free zone" sign. Background checks won't solve the problem...more efficient/intense background checks won't solve the problem...trying to strengthen the background check system will have a much impact on keeping guns out of the hands of criminals/potential criminals as denying the sale of a handgun to anyone names "Jared" would have in preventing another Tucson shooting.

Gun control, in any form, has always failed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals or from those who, with no prior history of violence (or at least no easily discernible history) from going on a killing spree. The only "gun control" solution that actually could work would be if there were no guns aywhere....a totally unarmed (not armed with firearms anyway) society and that includes law enforcement. Even military weapons would have to be EXTREMELY controlled as to who has access and when. Of course the above has to contend with the 2ND Amendment. The truth is that for all of us (our society) to enjoy our liberty, including firearm ownership, we, as a society, have to accept the cost of liberty; that cost being that some will misuse that liberty, including how they use a firearm. There is NO way to have perfect liberty and perfect safety - there will always be some who will seek to do us harm and/or infringe on our human rights. Unfortunately, there are many in our society today who don't understand the cost of or understand it but aren't willing to pay it. Even more unfortunately, there seem to be far too many firearm enthusiasts, even firearm organizations like the NRA, who either don't understand or, more likely, do understand but are willing to placate the "anti-gun" crowd with such things as background checks in hopes that they anti-gun crowd will be satisfied and leave the rest of us alone. Sadly, they will NEVER leave us alone...they will never be satisfied with any existing "gun control" measure and they will never stop in their pursuit to rid law-abiding citizens of their right to keep and bear arms. Those firearm enthusiasts who try to placate the anti-gun crowd are, in effect, sleeping with the enemy - that may feel good for a night or two but it never works out well long-term.

Background checks are one of those things that "sound good" but do nothing of substance when it comes to keeping firearms out of the hands of someone who's intent is to use the firearm to commit a crime. Anyone who truly wants a gun WILL find a way to obtain one - no background check will ever stop them....what background checks tend to do is simply make the law-abiding and dealers jump through hoops and add expense. I don't have the figures in front of me but I'd be willing to be that the overwhelming majority of "denials" are for some sort of faulty record/bad record keeping more than an actual criminal attempting to buy a gun from a dealer. As to Obama's Op-Ed...I can't help but wonder...if the Tuscon nutcase had used a car instead of a Glock, would Obama be proposing restrictions on who can by an automobile?...I seriously doubt it...and if he wouldn't propose such restrictions on buying a car, what is the real justification for doing so with regards to firearms? I suggest his only reason is the deep-rooted anti-gun belief he has demonstrated, on various occasions, the he holds.

Actually, I've got several things scheduled this year, mostly on fighting pistol with on course on carbines - one of my goals for myself this year was to get in some good training. I do understand and do agree that there are significant differences between shooting for precision/target purposes and shooting in a defensive situation...the main point of this thread was dealing with, what seemed to me, to be a somewhat unusual observation of "point and shoot" shooting vs really using the sights proficiently.

Another "weekend bump" I'm heading up there on Saturday to drive and finalize our cruise route and, since I'll be there anyway, I'm doing to do a bit of shooting as well! In case anyone wants to head up the way shoot me a PM and let me know and maybe we can meet up (I'll probably be arriving around 2PM or so)

One of my personal goals this year was to get in some good training...I'm taking a 2-day fighting pistol course from Tactical Response March 31/April 1 and a Defensive Carbine course from Sealed Mindset (in Atlanta) on April 3. I'm looking forward to all of them!

Damn....I must be too much of a social butterfly...I SO MUCH want to get into some IDPA matches (did two or three last year and thoroughly enjoyed it) but it seems as if every weekend there is a match I already have something scheduled. Oh well...maybe next month!
