I find the though that someone felt such a story needed to be done disgusting....that people are this stupid is just further evidence of how far the population of this country has fallen from any common sense. This is probably just the first in a series...the next will be warning people that water is wet to be followed-up with one to tell us that eating rocks is bad for our digestive system.

THP was my introduction to the round...I was fortunate to buy a Glock 31 issued to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the THP which, except for the test firing, has never been fired...since I didn't want to fire it either, I bought a standard G31 and after taking it to the range a couple of times I decided that it needed to be my primary carry weapon.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion about an accused person's guild or innocence. Thankfully, we citizens are not (or at least not supposed to be) convicted based on opinion. The bottom line with this case is that regardless of opinion, no one actually knows what happened or why or who is responsible - 12 independent people heard all the evidence and decided she was not guilty beyond a reasonable doubt - I don't see why people can't just leave it at that.

No...for a verdict, guilty or not guilty; ALL jurors must agree (if I'm wrong about that someone please correct me).

Our system of justice is not perfect; just the most perfect in the world. I can't say I followed the case that closely but from what I do know about, it seemed to me that the prosecution had a lot of theory and not much evidence - certainly not evidence that actually connected the women to her child's death. Above that, when I listened to some of the prosecution's case it seemed they couldn't even decide on any "one" theory about what happened or why. Bottom line is, the jury heard all the evidence without the media telling them what they should think and all 12 agreed that the prosecution didn't prove her guilty beyond a reasonable doubt...I can live with that and in any case, I'd rather see a guilty person go free than an innocent person spend the rest of his/her life in a jail cell (or worse).

Boy...I remember the Christmas catalogs from Sears, Penny's, Montgomery Ward...brings back some memories. Yes...I got the Cabella's hardcover catalog...kinda nice...must have cost them a pretty penny to print not to mention mail!

My Glock 31 is my primary carry weapon (switched to it from a Kimber PRO CDPII .45ACP). I'll let others here argue about whether it's a "better"/"worse" round than some other; I'll just say that I like the .357 Sig round a LOT for a number of reasons.

I suspect most of us here understand that; the problem is that too few people do understand that anymore (or worse yet, they understand but don't care).

I'm not really a "revolver" person but I've had a Ruger LCR with the CT Laser for a couple of years now...for weight and power (.38 +p) I think it's pretty hard to beat. Although I think all the recommendations offered here are great options. I'm sure this is not a surprising statement but it really depends on what you feel most comfortable with...like I said, I'm not a revolver person but I when deep concealment is necessary (or for a BUG), I decided on the LCR because it's hard to beat the simplicity (= dependability) of a simple revolver.

I too am stocking up on food and other essentials; just in case. However, I refuse to give up on the 2012 elections until they are over and we see where we stand. That said, while the boy president Obummer is a major problem, he certainly isn't the only one - we have a bunch of non-representing RINO Republican Representatives, RINO Republican Senators and a whole bunch of progressive/socialist/communist/good-for-nothing-never had and couldn't get a real job pieces of c**p people in both houses that are also a major problem (and that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of all the six-figure salaried bureaucrats who are almost always there regardless of who is in an elected office. If things don't get turned around very, very soon then I believe we'll see the time when it will be up to a handful of states who have the guts to band together and be the immovable rock against the torrent of socialism and one-world government that is trying to overwhelm the United States...shot of those states that stand up to Washington, then I believe that there will be nothing left of the once great United States of America; it will just be another collection of wimps with their hand out waiting for the government to take care of them and tell them what to think; how to act, what to eat, were to live and how much money they can make.

I can't tell you the specific terminology but each of my firearms is insured with the same company that has my homeowner's and vehicle insurance...each firearm is scheduled along with the estimated replacement value. It's a bit of a hassle if I sell one or buy one but without doing that I'd simply be out of luck were they stolen. I have both a good safe and an alarm system and that seemed to make a difference to the underwriter I was working with - I had the feeling that had I not had both they may not have written the policy. My insurance is with Traveler's. Hope that helps some!

I didn't mean to leave anyone hanging...I also can't teach the entire course here; but... What I'm talking about is that most of us go the range, stand there and shoot a paper target...sometimes (maybe almost all the time) we close whichever eye is not dominant and while we can get pretty accurate; we don't really practice how to approach a possible threat. As I said in my initial post, 80% of all defensive use of a firearm is done without firing a single shot...so...doesn't it make sense that we spend time practicing what to do to deter a possible threat and not quite so much on how to hit a man-sized target at 15 yards? The good news is that most of this practice can be done without any ammunition...it's repetition of the right motor skills so that our brains know what to do when we are facing a possible threat because at the moment of severe stress when the threat is upon us, we have to depend on the mental pathways we've (hopefully) built after a lot of dry-fire practice. Where we put our feet...where our hips should be...strong hand grip...what our arms should be doing...sight picture...trigger press, etc. I'm sure that a lot of what I've learned may well be "old hat" to many here...the overall point is to get some instruction from a variety of different sources...I'm not discounting range time with live ammo but the more training I take the more I realize that for defensive purposes...for responding to a threat, there is a lot more to consider and train for than accuracy on the range.

Hello everyone! This past weekend (June 18th/19th) I had the privilege of taking a Defensive Pistol course (Saturday) and a Defensive Carbine course (Sunday) with retired Navy Seal Larry Yatch of Sealed Mindset ( Sealed Mindset ). This was done in the Atlanta metro area and we actually used a truly INCREDIBLE firearms store/range called Big Wood's Goods ( BigWoodsGoods ). Sealed Mindset is headquartered and Larry does most of his training in Minnesota; this training was done in Atlanta in conjunction with "Armed American Radio" (and if you don't listen to AAR on Sunday evenings or by podcast you are REALLY missing some great radio. Anyway, this training was unlike anything I've ever had anywhere and if there is one thing I learned, it's that most of us who carry a defensive firearm spend far too much time practicing what we most likely don't need to practice. While I can't verify the stat, at least according to Larry, eight out of ten times that a weapon is used for defense, no shots are actually fired yet most of us who carry/enjoy firearms spend almost all our time shooting paper targets rather than practicing the things we should do for the other 80%. Anyway...just wanted to share a bit with you all...if you ever get a chance to train with Larry, jump at it and for that matter, take any opportunity you can to train - even after eight years active duty and years of firearms experience, I've come to realize how unprepared most of us actually are to handle a real, defensive situation.

Very, very sorry to hear of your loss but it sounds like Chopper was well loved and well taken care of and I'm sure he knew it too! It's amazing how large a hole a dog's passing can leave in our hearts - I know what you mean about these four-legged critters being "family"...my basset hound is the only family I have here in Tennessee and I can't imagine my life without her even though I know I'll have to face her taking that walk across the bridge just as i have with other "family" over the years.

I would say that whoever conducted this "study" and whoever wrote this article has NEVER taken a course in rational thinking.

I don't mean to rub anyone the wrong way here but there is nothing "wrong" with facebook. It's a communication/information/entertainment tool (just like the telegraph, the telephone [including cell phones], television, DVD's, video games and any number of other things including forums like TGO!). Anything can be abused...anything can take control of your life and your time if you LET THEM do so. I have friends scattered all over the world - the phone was fine (but expensive) when that was all we had...email was fine that that's all we had...now we have better, easier to use tools...it's as simple as that.

I'll add my $0.02 here. The problem with just having an emergency fund/handy cash is that there is an underlying assumption that there will be adequate supplies available to buy with your emergency fund dollars which may not always be the case (of course, you may have to get well away from the "disaster zone" to reach an area that's unaffected). Assuming there there will always be adequate supplies "somewhere" that you can get to is not all that dissimilar to the assumption that you'll likely never have to go through a disaster in the first place...most people never never experience a disaster where food, electricity, etc. is cut off for an extended period (or worse) but some do. As the old saying goes, if I may be allowed to paraphrase, "better to be prepared and not need it than to need it and not be prepared". I hope I never need my emergency supplies...just like I hope I never have to fire my weapon at another human being/take a life but I prepare for both possibilities just the same. As to the refrigerator; the food I'm buying doesn't need refrigeration - doesn't even need hot water to prepare the meal for that matter.

Hey folks, Did a quick search here on TGO and didn't find any threads on the issue - does anyone know if Georgia restricts how many "firearms" can be carried concealed (specifically, is a primary and BUG Okay)? I know that Tennessee doesn't restrict the number of firearms one can carry (which of course means that a BUG is not a problem) but even after reading GA's laws, I can't find anything definitive on the issue. Anyone knowledgeable that can help - your input would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!

Not a bad article....I'm still working on both my disaster preparedness as well as adding to my home security but I've definitely made some real progress over the past 18 months or so. I can't help but worry sometimes about family and friends who I know haven't prepared - it's difficult sometimes to resist the urge to take them by the collar, look them in the eyes and say "why haven't you prepared"...of course I don't do that and if I did it would probably do more harm than good!

I've never had a problem wearing the beret or the patrol cap - it seems to me that the uniform of the day headgear should be based on what makes sense for where you are an what you are doing; not on whether you are in an elite group or not. Very glad to see the velcro being optional - it's great for some things but simply doesn't hold up on uniforms in the field/washing, etc.

I wonder how long it will be until people engaging in conversations at a bar have to cite their references; stating them in APA style?

Well...I can't say I did something specific "today" or even everyday but in general: 1. I belong to many pro-firearm organizations and have for a long time; some are "politically inclined" and some tied to specific firearms related sports. 2. For the past two years I've organized two skeet shoots for my car club through which I've helped introduce about 25 people who have never owned or fired a firearm to the fun of firearms competition. 3. I'm currently working on a fundraiser for the Tennessee Firearms Association Legislative Action Committee that I hope will happen sometime this fall. 4. I'm as politically active as I can be regarding firearms-related issues. 5. I practice and I obtain training in a variety of shooting skills; defensive and otherwise. 6. I try and be a responsible gun owner by protecting my weapons from theft/loss and I always try to be a positive role-model of what it means to be a responsible, law-abiding, gun owning/gun carrying citizen. That's about as much as I have time and money for right now but I'm always open to new ways to help/be involved.
