Zombie Match - Music City Tactical Shooters
RobertNashville replied to HOGNUT's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
Well...if I can pull my lazy ass out of bed early enough to get there I'm going to try and kill a few zombies. This looks like fun! I guess I'll use one of my 1911s for this - these are zombies after all; no wimpy calibers for this one! ROTFLMAO -
How to change a local law about knives CLARKSVILLE
RobertNashville replied to a topic in Knives, Lights, EDC Gear
While not its primary focus, TFA is concerned about "arms", not just firearms. More importantly, TFA is trying to get the legislature to do away with ridiculous "opt out" provisions that allow every little town to adopt it's own laws/ignore state law. Granted, we need to change some of the stupid laws regarding knives, batons, etc. but in the meantime, Clarksville or Murfreesboro or any other "burg" shouldn't be able to enact laws that are more restrictive than state law. -
How to change a local law about knives CLARKSVILLE
RobertNashville replied to a topic in Knives, Lights, EDC Gear
To me, this is a perfect example of why individual communities should not be allowed to enact laws on such things as "weapons" that are different than the state the community is in. It's damn difficult enough to keep track of current state laws let alone all the stupid laws of every little town and village in the state. I'd suggest joining the TFA and help them work toward doing away with this "opt out" garbage. -

TLC's Livin' for the Apocalypse
RobertNashville replied to monkeylizard's topic in Survival and Preparedness
I admit, some "survivalists" ARE extreme...I suppose my point was that media (in this case TLC) seems to be going out of it's way to mostly find just those folks that are on the edge. Most of us who are concerned about preparedness, even really serious social breakdown are really just doing what folks like my parents and grandparents did as a matter of daily life...I can't remember a time growing up when we didn't have a 1 acre garden in our backyard and many months worth of canned goods and food we canned ourselves. We know how and did hunt and fish. We didn't think of it as disaster preparation...it was, as you say, "normal"; at least in the part of the country I grew up in. A lot of America today seems to think that being prepared means getting to the closest Kroger before the store shelves have been cleaned out. -
Zombie Match - Music City Tactical Shooters
RobertNashville replied to HOGNUT's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
It's a tough decision...I have two extracurricular passions in my life; firearms and cars. Next Saturday is a scheduled "Cars and Coffee" event in Knoxville and then driving the "Tail of the Dragon" (for anyone who doesn't know what that is just Google the phrase - suffice it to say that it's an 11 mill, 318 curve piece of road in the mountains near the TN/NC border that is literally known all over the world). On the other hand, one can never have enough practice at killing zombies since we never know when they'll attack. So...I'm leaning toward killing some Zombies since I haven't had a chance to be out this year but I'm still thinking. -
TLC's Livin' for the Apocalypse
RobertNashville replied to monkeylizard's topic in Survival and Preparedness
I find it somewhat amazing...well, maybe more troubling than amazing...that such common sense concepts as being prepared for emergencies (stored food, water, plans to bug out if necessary, etc) is somehow "extreme". Perhaps it's just the natural progression of the train of thought that the "government" is supposed to take car of you no matter what happens??? -

I've never heard before or read anywhere (other than your comments above) that that their popularity has anything to do with a move to "outlaw" such rounds? I still suspect that their popularity is based on legitimate concerns about over- penetration; maybe I'm wrong about that, I don't know. Every type/caliber of ammo has it's strengths and weaknesses. When it comes to effectiveness of one type of ammo compared to another; it may well be that frangible ammo is less effective than FMJ or JHP but I've never read anything that would lead me to believe that frangible can't get the job done. In close quarters such as inside your home; especially where other innocents are in the home (or you are in a neighborhood with other houses nearby), the danger of over-penetration is a very real problem that people need to think about...maybe frangible ammo isn't "the" answer but I do think it's a viable answer. -

Humm...can anything less potent than 9MM have any chance of stopping a zombie even with three head shots? I mean; you do want to keep this as "real life" as possible, right? -
I certainly enjoy the convenience of my cell phone and the internet and all the technology we have today; I even make my living because of technology. However, for some reason, I can't help but find it just a bit disturbing that technology that either was (or practically was) nonexistent just 15 or 20 or 30 years ago is now seen as almost "essential for life" these days (and seen as a "right" by some). Maybe I'm just getting old.

"Safety rounds/fragable ammo is popular because that kind of ammo is a good idea for home defense period. It's not simply a matter of concern over poor shot placement/accuracy - you can shoot the bad guy and hit him and still have reason to be concerned about over-penetration. What if you shoot the guy in the shoulder or arm and it's a through and through and then through the window behind him? Anyway; I'm not sure that anybody is "calm, cool and collected" when in the middle of a fight for their lives; including soldiers and law enforcement officers. Training WILL help you do what has to be done despite not being calm, cool and collected and one does not have to be or have have had LEO or Military training - there are many civilian schools out there (often the same ones that train military and LEOs, that can help you be prepared for the situation we all hope we never actually have to face. -
Sister-in-law purse stolen in Wal-Mart ( Halls, Tn )
RobertNashville replied to TnShooter83's topic in General Chat
I can understand and even support a retailer's decision to not physically/violently pursue a shoplifter...there ARE things, however that a store can and I think should do such as take photographs, get license tag numbers, train employees on getting good descriptions, etc. Those are modest things of course but over the years I've learned that even seemingly unimportant pieces of information can help police catch criminals. That said, what I DON'T understand and will not support is when retailers (and I believe Wal-Mart is one of them) don't even permit employees to defend their lives and will fire an employee who fights back when threatened. Stores are free to have such a policy but such policies show a complete and utter lack of concern for the lives of the employees. -
Well; I took my 13 year old nephew shooting last Thursday evening at the Sevier Indoor Range - as was noted above, not air conditioned but well lighted and very well ventilated so even with a 90+ degree afternoon the range was truly not over bearing as far as heat goes. The range and the store is clean and I can't say enough good about the friendly staff who were more than accommodating; a big thank you to them! Most importantly, this was the first time my nephew had ever shot anything but a small 22 rifle - he was ecstatic AND a damn accurate; even out to 25 yards! I took my Glock 31, Glock 20 and a Les Bare 1911 45ACP (my brother in law and I shot all the foregoing but I also brought my S&W model 29 44 Magnum and he and I put a few rounds down range in honor of Dirty Harry). I started my nephew on the G31 and then moved to the G20; after about 50 rounds through each we moved to the 1911 - he enjoyed them all but really liked the 45ACP and put 100 rounds down the pipe. So...thanks for the recommendations; we had a great time. Unfortunately; there wasn't an opportunity to teach my nephew how to clean all the weapons I brought; that's my job I guess!

I think the Glock sights are okay but I've never been a big fan of the "u"shape...I'm been thinking of switching to the Meprolight night sights where the front sights are green and the rear sights are orange...I saw a pair on a G31 while taking some training down in Atlanta and, with the two colors, it seemed that getting a proper sight picture was easier/quicker.

Better yet...stay out of Wal-Mart; they seem to be very attractive to dirt-bag criminals. -
Funny...the only time I've changed grips on a pistol was really for cosmetic reasons. With the Glocks I have, I like a particular type of sight which does not come on any Glock from the factory...I also usually add an extended mag release although that isn't a big deal for me...I guess I've never felt I needed to change the grips because they feel "right" for me.

Every door, window and open space in my house, including the garage, is monitored by my alarm system; at night, my alarm is set to go off instantly if tripped. If by chance someone got in without tripping the alarm I can manually initiate an alarm from my remote that I always have with me, especially at night in my bedroom. Aside from that, it's pretty likely that my hound is going to know, and let me know, if someone is around long before they ever get into the house (she's a pretty good early warning system). Once I know the alarm has sent it's signal; if I have have time I'll also call 911 directly - after that, anyone in my house who decides to come down the hallway toward my bedroom is going to be facing either my SCAR or my 12Ga Pump backed up by one of my handguns (which at night is likely going to be my Glock 20). In other words, my plan is to notify law enforcement and defend my "safe room" until the police get there. EDIT: I guess I should add that my situation is fairly simply compared to many here...I live alone save for the basset hound and a cat...no wife/children to worry about and nothing really valuable (or easy to carry out) in the front rooms of the house. Plus, there is no way for anyone to get to my safe or more valuable belongings without being in the line of file down the hallway leading to/from the master bedroom. I take great care in making my house "unattractive" as a target but if anyone breaks in anyway they are probably not going to leave happy. -
So put a $5 or a $10 around some paper cut to the proper size...get some fake money that looks close to the real thing. The entire trick may not work at all no mater what denomination of bill is used...then again, if it's dark out I doubt the bad guy is going to know! The point is to have a plan that might save you a lot more grief in the end and as I said, if it doesn't work you probably are no worse off then you were to start with and at the very least, the distraction may at least be enough to bring your own weapon into the equation.

I'd say most people modify their firearms in one way or another and even sometimes to the extreme (or if they have the cash they order them custom made to their specifications to start with)...I don't think "Glock" owners are substantially different in that regard the owners of any other pistol type. All my Glocks have some sort of night sight because they are better than the stock Glock sights...almost all of my 1911s either had night sights put on or were ordered that way...same thing as far as mag releases...I've never done or felt the need to do a trigger job on a Glock; one of my 1911s has a GREAT trigger job. As far as modifications go, I don't see that what people do with their Glocks to be substantially different than what people do with any pistol be it a 1911 or of some other configuration - I don't think modifying any weapon automatically signifies a weakness with the platform as much as simply a desire of the person to have "their" weapon "their way.

I had an HK45, purchased from TGO David, actually...it was a great gun but far to damn big to carry and I didn't need a safe queen or to have that much $$$ wrapped up in a nightstand gun so in the end, I sold it. I've moved to Glocks for my every day/SHTF weapons (at least as far as pistols go).

I can do next Sunday (the 28th) but I'm also open for dinner somewhere...maybe we can meet somewhere that has a meeting room we can use and have dinner??? My only problem with a weekday-evening meeting is that, coming from the 'Boro it might take me a while to get there (depending on where "there" is)! -
The first handgun I ever bought for myself was a '75 Colt Series 70 Gold Cup National Match; 45ACP of course - although I have many more 1911's that are "valued" much higher, my Gold Cup is still my prized possession. I've owned many 1911s over the years and still own quite a few...I love the 1911 platform and always will and do carry one from time to time. However, Training with 1911s at such places as SealedMindset and Tactical Response convinced me that my 1911 should probably not be my primary carry weapon any longer and a few months ago, I switched - my carry weapon 95% of the time, now, is a Glock 31 and I have a handful of other Glocks (30, 20, etc.). For combat fighting when you life is on the line, the 1911 is still good but in my experience, I think the Glock (or something similar) is a better choice overall.

I can't promise next Sunday for certain but at least at the moment; I don't have anything scheduled and I'll certainly try to get there.
