7 year old boy shot dead outside gun store.

You can say it all day long and twice on Sundays' but there is nothing you or anyone else can do to absolutely guarantee that such an event can not and will not ever happen to you. -
Trijicon Nite Site Opinions
RobertNashville replied to charlessummers's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
The fist thing I change on my Glocks are the sights and I usually go with XS Big Dots which have a tritium insert but I also have Trijicon Night Sights...I don't think you'll go wrong with either of those or the ones mentioned. What I would not do is leave the factory sights on the Glock. -

Disarmed in a traffic stop
RobertNashville replied to tennessee01tacoma's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I have to admit that I’m a bit befuddled with some of the posts that seem to either indicate suspicion of if not hostility toward officers. I’ve seen it in a lot of threads on this forum and I really don’t understand where these apparent feelings are coming from. Is it just that I’m from a generation that believed most LEOs were good people who wanted to serve? And, is that belief no longer justified? I don’t get it…I really don’t. I understand that no one wants to have an “official†encounter with a LEO but about 99.9% of the time; if we have one it’s because we really HAVE done something wrong and about 99.9% of the time the officer will treat you with the same courtesy and respect he/she gets from YOU. The officer isn’t out to trample on your “rights†(real or imagined or misunderstood) and he isn’t out to just cause you trouble – he’s there to do a job and I’m very glad he is. I know there are bad officers out there but if you really want to complain why not do so about the ones who really deserve it? I can’t see that the officer in this encounter did ANYTHING wrong; shouldn’t we be glad for that? -

I'm not sure how to take that...but I'm thinking it wasn't a compliment. -

I guess an officer walking up on a vehicle with several people in it...people he doesn't know at all, at midnight and at least one of the people is armed is HARDLY sufficient reason for the officer to ask the person to disarm while he's there on the side of the road and finishing the traffic stop. ;) -

So saying... "Were I a judge, I would throw every single case out of court where the officer disarmed the citizen just because he had a weapon and for no other reason." as you did above is a rational, well-thought out statement? -

Damn it Dave, you keep saying things lately that I agree with and I feel almost required to "like" your posts...you and I have had some real disagreements in the past and I'm starting to miss those exchanges. ;) -

No...what's crazy, as well as dangerous, is people who think it can't happen to them. No one here is impervious to making a mistake with a firearm. -

I guess you have powers we never realized...you can now look into the mind of an officer and know whether his belief is reasonable or not. ;) -

You have no "right" to be armed while in a police officer's presence when he suspects that you may have committed a crime, even one a "tiny" as simple speeding...while officers don't have to disarm you and while I appreciate that not all do, I completely understand why some would. They don't know you...they don't know what you are capable of....and just because you haven't been caught doing something seriously illegal in the past (which is all that having an HCP/running your plates can tell them) it is NOT unreasonable for them to decided to disarm you while they investigate/make a determination about whatever it was that caused them to stop you in the first place. Do some officers abuse their power? Absolutely...when/if one does then by all means, deal with it with their superiors and/or in the courtroom but that doesn't mean the rest aren't acting responsibly, reasonably and within the law when they disarm you at a traffic stop. I'm sure your liberty IS a serious subject for you...I suspect that going home alive at the end of a shift is a pretty serious subject for officers too. -
There are plenty of good tests out there showing penetration and expansion of various calibers but bottom line is, you want to carry the most powerful load/caliber you can but it's important to keep in mind that NO handgun has true "stropping power"...they are all just pumped up pea shooters when you really get down to it. We carry handguns because carrying a rifle everywhere isn't legal in most places (for different reasons) and isn't practical anyway. My home defense "handgun" is a SCAR light (5.56) backed up by a 12ga pump backed up by various 45s and 10mm and 357 Sigs. including Glocks and yes, 1911 handguns in various locations that I can grab easily and quickly. Still, the adage that when your life is at stake, any gun of any caliber that you have with you is better than any gun of any caliber you don't is still true. I still love 1911s...I still carry a 1911 now and then but I know from personal experience and from the personal experiences of trainers who collectively have tens of thousands of hours watching various weapons on the range in training that 1911s tend to fail more often than, for example, Glocks so most of the time, that's what I carry...they simply tend to go bang when you pull the trigger with more dependability than most 1911s.

Yuup...it's all part of a grand conspiracy. I mean, it can't possibly have anything to do with a cop, alone, walking up to a vehicle with a person or person in it that he doesn't know at all and has no real idea if this person(s) is just a fellow driving a little fast or if he's just come from beating or killing his girlfriend or he's just be fired from his job and is looking for a way to vent his frustrations at life. Just because a guy has an HCP is not a guarantee that won't be a problem or won't send an officer home at room temperature. There are REAL issues of diminishing and vanishing personal liberty...but a LEO disarming a person at a traffic stop is not one of those issues; especially when it's handled politely and respectfully. -
You would have to disagree with a LOT more trainers than Yeager. You won't find anyone who loves 1911s more than I and I too have a Nighthawk Custom Talon but I've taken quite a few courses now and in every one, it's the 1911s that have significant problems as the day wears on. I'm not saying that 1911s can't run reliability or that none do but I've seen more fail that not and not because they were cheep or because they weren't taken care of.

And I love the fact that there are, apparently, several perfect people around who never ever under any circumstances whatsoever make a mistake...I used to think there was only one of those guys. -

well, I guess some people are perfect; the rest of us make a mistake now and then. -
Really easy to judge someone you don't know and have never met isn't it. ;)

This^^^ It's such an incredibly sad story and situation...I can't even imagine the sadness this father and this family must feel. I'm a little taken back by some of the comments here. Obviously this father violated basic gun safety but how may of us have either had a ND or have come AWFULLY close to one (even if we don't want to admit it)? People are human and humans make mistakes and even a lifetime of training won't change that simple truth. Training and practice can make mistakes less likely but can't guarantee they won't ever happen. -
I bought a bunch of Black Tallon back in the day and still have several boxes of it. It was, at least arguably, the best commercial self-defense load of its day but there are recent, excellent production loads today that probably do at least as well if not better. That said, I won't part with what I have unless it leaves the end of the barrel of one of my 1911s in the middle of the night!

Well, anyone who carries a .40 is a retard. JUST KIDDING He also doesn't like 1911s for carry purposes either and I disagreed with him vehemently until I took a two-day fighting pistol course at Tactical Response and my very pretty, and VERY expensive 1911 that was supposedly designed specifically for reliable carry, choked so badly that I had to switch to another gun before lunch on the first day. He IS opinionated...he IS abrasive...he certainly CAN come across as a bit of a self-appointed, tin-plated dictator with delusions of god-hood BUT, he's also a good guy IMHO which is why his school is one of the schools I spend money at to train.

Now I see said the blind man...I had it turned around. I suspect Illinois will take it to SCOTUS then although I am sure they would rather not have this particular make-up of the court hear it. Of course, cases generally take a long while to get there so who knows what the court will look like when/if it does

Looking at the plaintiff's I see MICHAEL MOORE and MARY E. SHEPARD. I don't know and couldn't fine anything about Ms Shepard but it this is the well know super-liberal Michael Moore then I guess he or other backers could take this to the Supreme Court. However, given the cost of doing so and the present make-up of the court I'm not sure that would be money well spent. Perhaps they'll do so hoping Mr. Obummer has had a chance to stack the court with more gun-lovers like Sotomayor and Kagan. ;)

I don't think it's that's "non-competitive shooter types" don't understand...I think I understand but I'd probably classify myself as "non-competitive". I do IDPA because it's fun; I don't know that I'll ever be "competitive" unless my competition is all 90 year old grannies who have never fired a firearm before (even then, I'd probably do better on "time" more so than accuracy). ;)
