  5. https://www.wmcactionnews5.com/2021/06/17/23-guns-stolen-trailer-bass-pro-shop/ MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Police are searching for the suspects who stole 23 guns from a trailer at the Bass Pro Shop off Macon Road. MPD says the guns were being delivered to the store and the location downtown. Monday at 6 a.m. Memphis police responded to a vandalism incident at the Bass Pro Shops on Macon Road. The police report states three trailers were broken into, police have since learned 23 Long Guns were stolen: 2 assault rifles, 2 hunting rifles, and 19 semi-auto shotguns. Gwenevere Barber, Owner of Elegant Attire just a few doors down, says this is the first she heard of the theft. “I am really shocked you know, I knew nothing of it,” Barber said. As of now police have no suspect description, they know multiple suspects were involved because three vehicles were caught on surveillance video leaving the parking lot. In the video you can see a 2013 Silver Kia Sorento leave first, followed by a gold four door car, and the third car is a Silver Infiniti G35. “The parking lot is always full. I mainly monitor my store when I’m away through my ring doorbell so I didn’t see anything but I’m just really shocked and this puts me on a high alert,” Barber said. All stolen firearms have been entered into the National Crime Information Center. The FBI and ATF are assisting MPD with the case, whos says the firearms must be recovered. The urgency in finding the guns is due to the increase in gun violence the city of Memphis has been experiencing since the beginning of the pandemic. In a report released by the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission they look at gun crime data for the first quarter of the year; it states 1,576 violent incidents involving guns were reported, a 30% increase compared to last year. Police and Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich have expressed concerns and fear numbers will increase when the permitless carry law goes into effect on July 1. Permitless carry, or what some call constitutional carry, allows anyone 21 and older to carry a gun without a permit and without training. “Yes we do have a fear because of the data, because of what we’ve seen happen in our community since guns in cars was legalized,” Weirich said. “Will it affect our community? It will. We’re already affected by an overload of firearms and we anticipate seeing more…What we’re having to do right now is re-educate our officers on how to deal with that new law, how to approach subjects that are armed,” said James Ryall, former Interim Memphis Police Director. Bass Pro says, “We are working closely with law enforcement. Because their investigation is ongoing, we will refer all questions to them at this time.”

  10. https://www.newsmax.com/us/firearms-leaked-atf/2021/05/05/id/1020281/ A Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) document leaked by The Reload, could redefine which parts of a gun are considered a "firearm." The document, according to America's 1st Freedom, would change the federal definition of a frame and receiver as well as change federal marking requirements for firearms. According to the NRA-ILA, "The rule, if implemented, would completely upend the firearm industry by changing what parts must legally be considered a 'firearm' under federal law." The document in question, spanning 107 pages, also matches the title and bill number to a bill submitted to the Office of Information and Regulatory affairs in the third week of April titled "Definition of 'Frame or Receiver' and Identification of Firearms." The ATF's chief of public affairs, April Langwell, said, "I cannot confirm, nor deny, the authenticity of the document, nor can I comment on internal communications or deliberations on potential or hypothetical rulemakings." The new definitions stated in the document would make it possible for firearms to have more than one "frame or receiver," which is at odds with the federal controlling statute. The rule would also create a new marking requirement for particular Federal Firearms Licensees (FFL). The ATF said the law would significantly impact companies selling unfinished receivers--they would have to "adapt." Based on current marketing related to the unregulated sale of certain firearm parts kits, ATF anticipates that these non-FFLs would either become FFLs or would take a loss in revenue to sell a parts kit that does not contain a frame or receiver, or simply sell the frame or receiver, but not both," the document stated. The document went on to state the law could impact small firearm manufacturers. "ATF estimates the majority of affected entities are small entities that would experience a range of costs; therefore, this rule may have a significant impact on small entities." President Joe Biden has also nominated gun-control group advisor David Chipman to run the ATF. He stated told a congressional committee that, "Simply reinstating the 90s-era ban on assault weapons is not enough. Instead, we should regulate a broader class of firearms, including assault weapons manufactured before the law's enactment … while banning the future manufacture and sale of these firearms." If the document proves authentic, the rule will be published before May 8. Interested parties would have 90 days to comment on the proposal. All comments must include the documents docket number ATF 2021R-05.

  17. https://wreg.com/news/memphis-city-council-passes-resolution-opposing-permitless-carry-in-tennesse/ MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis City Council approved a resolution opposing a state bill that would allow residents to carry a gun without a permit. Cosponsored by City Council members Chase Carlisle, Patrice Robinson, JB Simley, Jr. and Dr. Jeff Warren, the resolution said the proposed legislation would endanger the “health, welfare and public safety” of those in the city of Memphis. Memphis Police Director Michael Rallings, District Attorney General Amy Weirich and Memphis mayor Jim Strickland have all said they oppose the measure. More than 55 Memphians have been killed this year, which is well ahead of last year’s record homicide number of 332. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, who is a supporter of the bill, has argued that allowing more law-abiding citizens to carry guns would make Tennessee safer.
