I add polish about every third batch or when it seems to be taking longer to shine it up.

Try a capfull of Nu Finish car polish in your media. That and a tablespoon of mineral spirits will make it shine in a couple of hours. Also, put a couple of used dryer sheets in the bowl to absorb dust and keep your media cleaner.
