  1. Clenzoil is great stuff. Use it on all of my guns including hunting shotguns. Superposed
  2. Wife and I got ours in 3.5 weeks from mailing. Superposed
  3. I think the one place that the cameras have been a good idea are in the "S" curves on Hixson Pike in Chattanooga. It has really cut down on the bad wrecks on that part of the road. Other places I am not so sure about. Superposed
  4. Typical Gun City attitude. They were this way when they first opened up many years ago and apparently haven't changed. Superposed
  5. You folks just need to get up earlier. I got there about 7:20 AM. About 3 cars waiting for the opening. We went in about 7:35 AM with about 6 cars in the parking lot. Nice store but just like other Academy stores I have been in. Looked around about 20 minutes, bought a few small items and left. Shotgun shell prices weren't very impressive (of course Sportsmans Warehouse prices aren't either). Handgun ammo prices were decent. I did hear an employee at the gun counter say they expected to get in a better variety of long guns in the next few weeks. I did find out that the opening yesterday was considered the "soft opening". More of a training and working the bugs out opening. The grand opening is supposed to be in about two weeks. Maybe they will have some grand opening specials. They had so many employees working at that time of the morning asking me if they could help me that it was comical. Superposed
  6. I certainly agree that my granddaughter's husband probably bought the gun for he himself to end up carrying (remember the extreme male ego). I am going to make sure that the .380 and a .38 Special revolver go to the course with her. I want her to try both and make her own decision which direction (pistol or revolver) she wants to go in. It should be interesting when she sees how well her mid-60's grandmother shoots her handgun. I am just waiting for the next family get-together. My granddaughter's husband made a comment at a get-together about a year ago that revolvers were outdated, not worth carrying and generally downgraded them. I got my wife a "Wheelguns Are Real Guns" t-shirt to wear at the upcoming family cookout. Maybe a little ego humbling will take place. He doesn't want to compare HCP course targets with her. (I am certainly not putting down pistols. I wish I knew more about them and their operation. Have a Sig 226 and 10mm Delta Elite myself.) I appreciate all of the comments and information passed on to date. Superposed
  7. I have been to about 10 of the Cabela's as my wife and I traveled across the country. Been in too many Gander Mountain's to count. Gander is so ridiculous on gun and ammo prices mainly go in there to use the restroom while traveling. Bass Pro is OK. Nice to look around in. I only buy accessories and other items from Cabela's or Bass Pro. If you are out in the Dakotas or Iowa, check out the Scheel's All-Sports stores. Great gun selection and lots of accessories. Prices are about average to high but neat stores. My wife knows if we see a Cabela's or Scheel;s sign we are going to stop in. Superposed
  8. I have a 22 year old granddaughter that is being encouraged by her husband and father to take the HCP course and carry a handgun. This young lady has never ever fired a handgun of any kind. She needs to learn the responsibility of and safety with a handgun and how to handle, shoot, clean, etc. a handgun. I do not want her father and husband to take the lead in this training. Her husband is very full of male ego and both, while having HCP's, don't have very much experience with handguns. I would like for her to learn about handguns and shooting from a qualified individual that she does not know. I believe that having a good instructor that is a stranger would increase her learning intensity and teach her the proper way to handle a pistol/revolver. I have found a good beginners handgun course for ladies only that sounds like what this young lady needs. I am willing to pay for the course and ammo for my granddaughter. Her husband (supposedly for her) bought a Ruger LCP .380. I would also like for my wife to go through the course with her so she won't feel too intimidated. Her grandmother is laid back and likes to shoot a revolver. She has had two police courses for ladies handgun use, was one of the best shooters in her HCP course (men or women) with her .38 and is no nonsense about safety and handgun responsibility. The granddaughter listens to her and it would instill confidence to have her grandmother there. After this course, then the granddaughter can decide if she wants to go to the HCP class. Does this sound like a good plan? Is there anything I am missing? What do the ladies on this forum recommend for comfortable hearing protection for a young lady with long hair (I am sure she will put it up in a ponytail)? I want her to learn about handguns the right way. Any help is appreciated. Good Shooting Superposed
  9. Thanks for the replies. I had Hamilton Bowen put a target trigger on a Ruger Mark II a long time ago and he did a great job. Know of his national reputation with Rugers, just never thought of him for Smith & Wessons. Makes sense he would do equally good work on a S&W. Superposed
  10. I picked up five boxes of MagTech .38 Special at Cabela's in Kansas City about three years ago. When my wife and I went to take our HCP course I got two boxes off the shelf for us to use in the firing part of the course. My wife and I were in separate groups in the firing part. She got through first and asked me where I got the ammo she used. She said it sure did recoil more than the other plinking loads she had used. I found out that she was right. Superposed
  11. Wish we had elected a dead person in Chattanooga. Ron Littlefield ain't much. Superposed
  12. I am looking for a good gunsmith who can "tune" the triggers on a couple of Smith & Wesson revolvers. I need to have the trigger pull weight reduced and as much creep as possible taken out. I need the name of a good gunsmith in East Tennessee (or even Middle Tennessee) that anyone would recommend to do this work. Any help is appreciated. Superposed
  13. Just like the rest of the candidates, a pretty lame ad with no substance. Superposed
  14. My wife and I took the HCP on 3/30 and 4/1. Went to the Bonny Oaks Drive Driver's License Station on 4/5 but it was covered up with people. Went back on 4/2 and my wife and I handed in our paperwork, etc. at the same DLS. Then went straight to UPS to get the fingerprinting done. When at home that evening I noticed the worker at the DSL had not kept my wife's wife Handgun Course Completion certificate (white copy). I called Nashville the next morning. The lady in Nashville said to take the certificate back to the DSL and have them put my wife's certificate with her paperwork. I sure hope her paperwork gets all back together. The people at the Bonny Oaks DSL are idiots and full of attitude. Superposed
  15. Wish we had him in Hamilton County. Gang violence, home invasions, car jackings, etc. is getting out of hand. Superposed
  16. A man from Bartlett, TN was beaten and robbed in broad daylight on Monday outside the Trade Center. Just be on your guard in downtown Chattanooga. Some not so nice areas are a short distance from the tourist areas. Superposed
  17. The only gun show I go to is the Wanamaker Tulsa Oklahoma Gun Show. Try to go about every other year. They have a large amount of collector guns but also have other firearms and ammo. More like the old time shows of the 1960's than any other current gun show. And not a beef jerky table in over 4000 tables. Be prepared to spend two days to see it all @ $10 per day but it is worth if you just look. I gave up on local shows a long time ago. Superposed
  18. I would think not being a NASCAR fan would get you banned from ever living in Soddy Daisy. Superposed
  19. Let's remember the previous two former congressmen that were elected governor. Don Sunquist, the father of the Tennessee Income Tax proposal (Jimmy Naifeh was the "mother"). Also almost did in Tennessee by not being able to control TennCare. And then there was Ray Blanton who did prison time over his commuting sentences for pay and other crimes. We don't like Washington running our lives but we will elect someone who has been part of the Washington "Belt Way" establishment. That is not what Tennessee needs. Superposed
  20. What do you expect out of Jack Benson? In past elections he endorsed Leamon Pierce for re-election. Superposed
  21. Had about 6-8 inches of snow fall Friday afternoon up on Flattop Mountain. Had to take Polaris Ranger about a mile down our low traffic, secondary road to pick up my grown daughter who couldn't get to our homes due to four vehicles in the road and/or ditch blocking the road. Snow coming down heavily. Also took one man home about a half a mile away because his vehicle couldn't get up a hill. Fun ride back home with the daughter in a Ranger with no windshield and heavy snow. Wrapped daughter up in one of my extra heavy coats and a blanket over her head for the ride home. I will put the windshield in the Ranger this week. Ice and sleet fell Friday night. Covered everything. Electricity went out about 3 AM Saturday morning. Just got electricity back on again at 1:30 PM today (Sunday). Ice just starting to fall off of trees. It sure is fun living on a mountain. Superposed
  22. Andy Berke and his family may be liberals but Mr. Berke stood up and directed legislation through the Tennessee State Legislature that allowed Montlake Classic Clays to reopen without the repressive restrictions put on it by the Hamilton County Commission. The initial closing of Montlake Classic Clays was ramrodded by none other than Commissioner Fred Skillern, a Republican. You didn't see Republican State Senator Richard Floyd of Chattanooga leading any legislation in the State Senate to reopen this range. Chattanooga and Hamilton county now has its only public sporting clays/skeet/trap facility reopened and operating because of the efforts of Mr. Berke and Democratic State Senator Doug Jackson among others. Sometimes labels don't fit in every instance. Superposed
