  1. Having been on both sides of the fence, I know that sometimes you just can't win. Since I wasn't there, I'll just say that had it been me, it probably would have happened like this: Older Gent (OG) - "I've got these two old S&W revolvers. What kind of trade will you make towards this new pistol right there?" Me - "How about your revolvers and $450?" OG - "OK." Me - "Just a minute Sir. I thought we were beginning a negotiation. I started way low expecting you to start high and have us meet up with a trade that was fair to both. If you want my best offer, that would be your revolvers plus $250. I'm here to make a living like anyone else, but I want you to know I didn't take advantage of you." OG - "Oh, I didn't know. I appreciate you being honest about it." I've had that happen to me many times. I've also had the guy that wants to use his 'brand-new' without a box only been shot about 200rds over the past two years and never even cleaned or wiped off gun as a trade. And he expects that he can get $500 since that what the guy three aisles over at the Gun Show who prices 20% over list has on his gun that IS new. Sometimes you just can't win!
  2. Yep, seems that when the FBI transitioned to the 10mm, shooting scores dropped dramatically. While I generally believe that more powerful = better, in this case, the FBI did the right thing. After all, only the hits count. I know that when I went from .45acp to .400 Corbon some years ago, it took a good 500rds to get used to the increased flash and recoil. I don't care who you are, a huge ball of fire from the muzzle IS distracting! I've since gone back to .45acp, simply because blinding oneself from muzzle flash is not a good defensive move.
  3. Are there any Pacers or Gremlins still on the road? It's really a null choice. Why have to choose between one non-running car and another non-running car? Back in the '70's, I had friends with each one. They did not last long. Remember, this was in the heyday of American automobile manufacturer's Great Experiment in Poor Design and No Quality Control!
  4. There are no Federal regulations governing any kind of muzzle-loader regardless of size. As far as I know, TN does not have any either. I would be very surprised to learn of any. A 10-12 inch bore is pretty large for a brass or bronze tube. I'd probably opt for a pretty thick seamless steel bore liner. ;-) A replica swivel gun would be neat! These were small cannon used on ships and forts that mounted on the fort wall or ship rails to fire large loads of buckshot during close combat. Typically, they had 1"-2" bores and were 24-36" long. Have fun!
  5. At 68, he's already been a Curio & Relic for 18 years!! I became one myself just a few years ago. C&Rs just need a little better cleaning and lubrication, but shoot just as well as ever!
  6. It's really hard to beat 'A Bridge Too Far' and 'The Longest Day'. Even now, they do not seem dated. Film-making at it's best without relying on special effects. For fiction, 'The Wild Geese' and 'The Dirty Dozen' are the two that I still find myself wanting to watch again. For obscure films, try 'The Boys in Company C', 'Das Brucke' (The Bridge), and 'Farewell to the King'.
  7. Every time Halsam and Wamp open their mouths, Ramsey gains a few polling points. I sure hope they keep talking!!
  8. I've seen several people saying that Ramsey will not win as their excuse for voting for another candidate. This displays a fundamental lack of understanding of their responsibility as a voter. The purpose of voting is not to vote for a 'winner'. The purpose of voting is to show your selection of the person best suited for the job. If you are not voting for the person you believe is best suited, you end up with unsuitable people. Your vote should not depend upon opinion polls, talking heads, or Britney Spears' opinions. The only thing that matters is YOUR opinion of who is best for the position. And this love/hate thing is really silly as well. I don't know anyone who really 'love's or 'hates' a particular candidate. Generally they prefer one candidate over another. While I believe that Ramsey would be the best person for the job of TN Governor, Wamp as governor would not be the end of the world. I think that the Legislature could keep his Federalist and free-spending tendancies in check. And while Constitutional Carry and making TN gun laws make sense might take longer, it will still be possible. The point is, become informed to the best of your ability and vote your conscience. That is your duty and responsibility as a free person. Doing otherwise is how we got Obama.
  9. As stated above, try to shoot it before you buy it. The CETME is a good rifle. Parts and magazines are inexpensive, so there is no excuse for not having spares. Biggest problems troops have had with the CETME military versions are bolt rollers cracking (relatively rare if you keep it clean), ejectors getting bent, and receiver dents. For civilian use, you are unlikely to see any of these. Still, I would recommend a complete bolt head (with firing pin) and complete trigger assembly (with ejector) as spares. HK mags usually work quite well in the CETME and are very inexpensive. They have the ergonomics of a 2x4, a trigger made for gorillas (not guerrillas) and are quite heavy for a 16" barrel rifle. Still, they are known to be very reliable and accurate if you get used to the trigger. Have you looked at the FN FAL? You can usually get a decent one for just a little more than a CETME. Easier to field-strip and and clean than an AK. As far as reliability, check out the story of 'Ol' Dirty'. The FAL Files Forums - The Tale of Ol' Dirty. A Texas Legend. (Update: over 15,000 rnds fired w/o cleaning)
  10. Steven Tyler is big 2nd Amendment supporter. For all that the band is from Boston, they do NOT have Massachusetts political beliefs! Getting rear-ended by senior citizens happens quite frequently to motorcycles. Slower reactions combined with inability to accurately judge distances means that seniors tend to fail to stop soon enough. Joe Perry is one heck of a guitarist and I hope that he doesn't lose any of his talent because of a bone-headed woman.
  11. So, these people are amazed that Section 8 housing has crime rates similar to the 'projects' they replaced? Why is it that what is so blindingly obvious to normal people is shocking to liberals? The same thing happened when they built the projects in the first place! "We'll get these poor people out of the nasty tenements and put them into nice, government-funded highrises where they can leave their old lifestyle behind!!"When the 'projects' just proved to concentrate the criminal elements, they decided that moving spreading them out into nicer apartments (at taxpayer expense) was the answer. Now, they are deciding that Section 8 didn't work either. What's next? Buying them houses in suburban neighborhoods with OUR money??!! What a bunch of maroons!!
  12. Wamp and Haslam acted as though they were the only ones in the race. Both ducked and dodged and basically slammed each other. McWherter and Ramsey were the only ones who came across as having any integrity and being honest. I think that Ron Ramsey benefited from the debate, but Haslam and Wamp were hurt by it. TV ads and yard signs do not win elections. Only people who actually go out and vote matter. If you want a candidate to win, talk him/her up to your friends and neighbors. A personal contact counts a LOT more than TV ads or yard signs. And yard signs are yours for teh asking.

    Whale Wars

Minke whales are not on anyone's endangered species list. The Japanese get about 500 each year from an estimated population of over 500,000. Iceland, Japan, North and South Korea, Canada, the USA, Indonesia, Russia, St. Vincent in the Caribbean, and Norway are most of the countries which still hunt whales of various species (none of which are endangered). Sea Shepherd is a terrorist organization which has performed many illegal and dangerous acts including: "scuttling and disabling whaling vessels at harbor, intervening in Canadian seal hunts, ramming other vessels, trying to temporarily blind or disorient whalers with a laser device,[/url] throwing bottles of foul-smelling butyric acid onto vessels at sea,[5] boarding of whaling vessels while at sea, and seizure and destruction of drift nets at sea". Sea Shepherd Conservation Society - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The reason they target the Japanese is NOT because they kill more whales than anyone else. It's because in the Southern Ocean, it's just them and the Japanese where the terrorists can manage the story and not be interfered with by anyone else. If they attacked any other countries' ships, they would immediately be arrested, assets seized, and tried for assault. By only operating far from anyone else, they can tell their side of the story without contradiction. One of their common weapons is a prop-fouling rope reinforced with steel rope. In the southern ocean, a disabled ship can easily be broached by waves and capsize. In 35degree water, this would cause many deaths. They have also used limpet mines to sink ships at harbor. They have been lucky not to have killed anyone yet, but have injured Japanese sailors with butyric acid. These people are well-funded. When the Ady Gil was sunk in a collision with a Japanese ship (no blame assigned to either ship), fund-raisers sent over $3million in one week to Sea Shepherds to replace the ship. Most of their supporters are radical liberals in the entertainment industry, but Animal Planet also pays them an undisclosed amount for each episode of 'Whale Wars'.
  14. It will take 4 hours. They will start painting together, then Jane will start complaining that Jimmy is not getting complete coverage, dripping paint, missing spots, holding the roller/brush/spray gun wrong, etc. Jane will then start going back over Jimmy's work. Jimmy will go get a beer and watch the game. Jane will then re-paint everything Jimmy did, and do the rest of the house. Elapsed time - 4 hours.
  15. I'm a fan of the old Model 11. My grandfather taught me to shoot on these shotguns, and I have his set of 12, 16, and 20ga. The secret as mentioned above is to properly set the friction rings. Properly set, the gun doesn't kick any more than a pump or double gun. These are virtual copies of the Browning A5, and most parts on early guns are interchangeable from Browning to Remington. Look on page 10 of teh Browning manual to get information on how to set your friction rings. http://pdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/browning_auto5lite.pdf

  18. This ammo is a mild steel core and contrary to popular belief, it is NOT 'armor-piercing'. If you post it on GunBroker, you can probably get $.35-.40/rd for it, especially in unopened spam cans.
  19. Vote-buying at it's finest. Reid uses $61+million of OUR money to buy an NRA endorsement. Typical NRA politicking. They would rather give an endorsement to an incumbent who could stab them in the back than support a newcomer who is idealogically sound.
  20. This was a VERY common caliber until after WWII. Many pocket-sized revolvers used it, a well ass many larger ones. It was the standard British pistol cartridge in WWII with a 200gr RN bullet. If you see references to a .380 revolver cartridge, that's the British name for this cartridge. I used to shoot it a LOT when I was young and very poor. A Lee handloader, some wheel-weights, primers, and powder were all you needed to shoot all day long for a penny or so a shot. Using plinking loads, the cases were good for 15-20 reloadings, and once-fired cases were sometimes picked up free at the range. That was in the '70's, and the old H&R and Iver Johnsons were still pretty commonly used as shopkeepers guns.
  21. McDonald did a LOT more than just reaffirm Heller. Two main points came from McDonald: 1) The 2nd amendment was incorporated as an individual right under the 14th Amendment. That means that any state, local, or Federal law which infringes upon that right is subject to 'strict scrutiny' in court. 'Strict scrutiny' means that there must be an overwhelmingly compelling reason for the infringement. Now, the 2nd amendment must be treated as strongly as the 1st and 4th Amendments 2) Justice Thomas' startling separate concurrence has put the legal community on notice that the Supreme Court has at least one justice who believes that ALL of the Bill of Rights should be incorporated and apply to the States. This threatens to overturn Slaughter House and other of SCOTUS' less intelligent decisions which have set precedence. Breyer's opposing opinion is poorly written and would not pass muster for a first-year law student. It uses convoluted and irrational arguments to attempt to say that although the 2nd is an individual right, it is different from every other individual right and thus should not be protected as an individual right. and yes, it really IS that screwy of an opinion! The Supreme Court is under no obligation to hear ANY cases. But they have said that they try to hear cases where lower courts are in disagreement or the law is not clear.
  22. This has a lot more to do with MacDonald than Heller. And there is plenty of ammo at lower court levels. Not just US v Rock Island, but also US v Farmer, and others. It has been ruled in several Federal district courts that the '86 MG ban presents a legal contradiction. The Supreme Court has been adamant against taking ANY MG-related cases. An excellent MG case for the Supreme Court would have been US v Hamblen. They declined to hear that one just a few weeks ago.
  23. I don't see it being sustained. If an individual has a right to keep and bear arms, then any restrictions on that right are subject to strict scrutiny. Under 'strict scrutiny' there has to be a constant and compelling reason to deny that right. That means the antis will have to PROVE that people are safer in gun-free zones than in other places. The problem is the cost and effort involved in challenging these laws. It is much cheaper and easier to change the law than to get them overturned in court.
  24. My family and I just got back from Arizona. If you have not seen the Grand Canyon, you really MUST see it!!! Didn't get hassled or see anyone getting hassled about ID. There is a lot of BS in the media about the Arizona law. The ACLU statement above comes really close to being an outright lie. When you read it, it sounds like they are saying that the law invites officers to arbitrarily arrest anyone who 'might' be in the country illegally. Actually, the reverse is true. It says that AFTER a person is arrested, if the person is suspected of being in the country illegally, THEN the police can require that person to prove they are here legally. And this section IS an outright lie: "If individuals are unable to prove to the police officer that they are permitted to be in the United States, they may be subject to warrantless arrest without any probable cause that they have committed a crime." If you cannot prove you are here legally, then THAT is probable cause of a crime (illegal entry into the US). I'm surprised. Usually the ACLU does a better job of trying to incite outrage without resorting to such obvious lies.
  25. Your own link at votesmart.org answers that question. Zach Wamp has not demonstrated to me that he understands the concept of 'We the People' as his employer. Rather, he seems to look at government programs and pork-barrel spending as legitimate ways to solve problems that are not the government's legitimate business.
