In the early 1980's, I found several loaded BAR mags in a rotted sandbag at Ft Hood, TX while digging a fighting position. Later, I had a friend of mine with a BAR unload these at the range. All worked perfectly. Those mags had been out there at least 30 years, probably 40 or so. It is not how long a spring is compressed that wears them out. It's how many 'cycles' of compression they have had.

Hmmm, this sounds a little fishy. If that were true, why would faster burning powders yield higher pressure than a slower burning powder using the exact same barrel/bullet combination? It seems to me that since burning powder has a sharp pressure peak just as the bullet starts moving, that reducing the friction would allow that peak to spread further down the barrel, leading to higher velocities. This works exactly the same as why friction-reducing rings in your car's engine leads to higher peak HP and better fuel economy.

I have yet to find a compact .45 that I like better than my antique Star PD. Light, slim, compact, and reliable, it is my favorite carry weapon. for a while, recoil buffers were hard to find, but they are now easy and inexpensive to acquire. I change mine every 500rds in order to prevent frame wear. Until CZ makes a single-column, compact .45, I'll stick with the Star. I've also got a Firestar in .45 which is smaller and thinner than the PD, but it is very heavy for it's size and a bit unpleasant to fire.

I've seen it happen in person exactly once in the past 34 years. Reloads with deep seated primer.

Actually, Sudafed is NOT a key ingredient in meth. It is a key ingredient in one of the easiest and cheapest methods used to illegally manufacture meth. There are other methods of illicit manufacture that do not utilize commercial cold remedies. All of the processes used to manufacture meth are potentially hazardous and involve dangerous substances. The latest statistics I have seen has shown no change in the price or availability of street meth as a result of the restrictions on cold remedy sales. And according to the 2006 study, only 20% of US illegal meth comes from domestic production. the other 80% is smuggled in from Mexico and other countries. So, I fail to see how keeping normal people from buying 37 cold pills has any effect whatsoever on the illegal trade, manufacture, or use of meth. I had a cousin who was destroyed by meth use. So I am intimately aware of how destructive those addicts can be to themselves and anyone around them. But I fail to see how making it illegal has had any positive effect on reducing it's use or manufacture. I believe that the money could be much better used on treatment. Those in favor of keeping drugs illegal often make the point that if they were legal, we would see a huge explosion in their use. This is in opposition to the facts and reason. Illegal drug use INCREASES when the drugs are made illegal. The reasons should be obvious. When a drug can be bought without restriction, you don't find pushers in the schools putting pressure on your kids to take them, or slipping it to them to get them hooked and increase their customer base. Prior to 1913, there were no drug restrictions in the US. Drug addiction rates were actually slightly lower than they are today. A perfect example is what happened during Prohibition. Per person alcohol usage rates went UP. After the repeal of Prohibition, alcohols usage dropped to below it's previous levels. And so did the crime, corruption, and other ill effects of illegal alcohol.

I built a M4-gery on a M1 Sales kit and a Century receiver about six years ago. It has been reliable and accurate. Their prices are comparable to other job-lot dealers like J&T, M&A, etc. My bolt, carrier and barrel have NSNs on them, so they are mil-spec.

While not perfect, this bill DOES seem like an improvement and simplification of our current carry laws.

I have no experience with Red Jacket. I have a GemTech Outback which is small, light, and works very well on both rifles and pistols, including my Walther P22. In TN, we have mandatory sheriff sign-offs for the Form4 transfer. Why do you want a trust? It seems like unnecessary complication, expense, and paperwork.

The receiver is the controlled item. An intact receiver without proper registration is a serious felony. A STEn MKII parts kit is worth about $250 in good shape.

Prices are a bit out of date. Drop-In Auto Sears run the same as a receiver, and Lightning Links are running 8-9K. Lightning Links are notorious for not running well with .22 kits. The bolt carrier simply doesn't have enough mass to trip it.

I've got a P22 which has been pretty reliable for over 4000 rds. It did have an issue with the safety detent spring failing, which used to be pretty common. I understand that the issue has been resolved on newer pistols.

TGI generally sells the items they only have a few pieces of on GB. Sometimes they have a really cool item or two there. Get your C&R, they will ship direct to you then.

It's not 'freedom of speech' if you are only allowed to say things that everyone agrees with. If people are not allowed to say things you disagree with or don't like, then there is no 'freedom'.

Yep, and you only pay if you WANT to! With politicians, you don't really know what you are getting until they are in office, you can't stop them for at least two years, and you never know what they will REALLY cost you!

That is why! Unfortunately, there is little incentive to not file these suits. Many juries will regard this as the opportunity to screw a corporation (insurance company) and award a large settlement so that the idiot wins. Unfortunately, we ALL pay when the insurance company loses. Guess why insurance rates are so high! The money has to come from somewhere! And when ONE insurance company loses a stupid suit like this, ALL insurance companies have to razise their rates to compensate against the increased risk.

Affordable, huh? That means a lot of different things to different people. But I'll take it to mean "How cheaply can I get a decent carry gun". I'll sort some options for you, and you can go check them out to see what suits you best. 1) Best value in Inexpensive right now is the Czech CZ82. 9x18mm ammo (9mm Makarov) is not found at WalMart, but is inexpensive online. This is a well-made, reliable pistol with a 12-round magazine. Excellent ergonomics and accuracy, my wife stole the first one I got. Make sure you get two magazines with the pistol as spares are a bit pricey at ~$30 each. Pistols start at about $200. 2) If you shop, you can find some of the Polish P64 pistols for under $200. Another 9x18mm pistol, it is rather smaller than the CZ82, and has a reputation as having a bit of a fierce recoil. But, if you like pocket carry, this is a better choice than the CZ82. Magazines are a bit hard to find, so see if yours comes with two. 3) Keltec P3AT or PF9. The P3AT is in .380 (3AT, get it), and smaller and less expensive than the PF9. It makes an excellent pocket pistol. Both of these are double-action only, which means a long, heavy trigger pull. Not many people actually LIKE to fire these tiny pistols, but they are great for CCW. The P3AT seems to run about $250 on sale, and the PF9 about $50 more. Sometimes you can find a used one for less. Both Ruger and Taurus have come out with copies of these pistols. As far as I can see, the main difference is that the Taurus and Ruger are more expensive. If you buy a new one, expect to run at least a box of ammo (probably two) through it to 'break it in'. 4) And here is the "Wild-card, Student-Special" option!!:koolaid: Nagant revolver. Everyone on this board is asking me if I'm nuts! Nope, here's why. You can get a nice one for about $100! The caliber is 7.62 Nagant, but I use .32 H&R magnum in mine. The .32 Mag is about as potent as the proven .38 special, so the caliber is OK for self-defense. (I said "OK", not 'perfect') If you get a Lee hand-loader, you can relaod for about $.10/rd. It's a bit large for CCW, but not a whole lot. It's a 7-shot, but still slimmer than most .38s. Get one made after 1934, and it will have a chromed bore (higher velocity, less corrosion). And, because they are cheap and plentiful, you can slim the grips and chop the barrel back to 3" without feeling guilty. All told, you should be able to get a complete setup with loading tools and dies for under $200. Have fun looking, and we'll see you at the range!

Unless you are a NFA manufacturer, such a conversion is not legal. Congress in it's 'wisdom' passed a law in 1986 forbidding the new manufacture of machineguns for private citizens. If you have a legal M-16, you can easily convert it to .22lr so that it will also fire full auto. Current price of a legal M-16 is running right at $10,000.

Happy 100th Birthday Browning M1911 .45acp!!!! A century in service and STILL one of the world's best combat handguns!!! Nothing against Glocks and other Tupperware, but I wonder if any of them will LAST 100 years!! The oldest Glocks are barely 30. I wonder at what point the frames will start to get brittle?

I have a friend who did a similar thing in Western NC. He and his wife bought the land first. They bought one of those pre-fab storage buildings (15'x15') and had it set up on the property near where they planned to build the house. They added insulation and a window air conditioner unit and moved into it. They lived in it for 18 months while they built a 3000sq/ft house. When they had the house mostly built, they moved in and continued to finish the house. He said that after that first winter, they had a HUGE incentive to get the house ready to live in before the next one! They now have a very nice house, a nice storage building, and no mortgage.

If you do not yet have a .22 pistol, I'd spring for that first. Of course, if you get a bargain G19 or 1911 for ~$400, then you can spring for a .22 conversion kit to bring it up to $600. Unless you are being sponsored by an ammunition manufacturer or get us poor taxpayers to buy ammo for you, then you can still fire at least ten practice shots with .22 for each full-power round. An added benefit to the .22 is that while many ranges restrict certain types of ammo, I have yet to see a range which restricts ANY type of .22 rimfire! Likewise, there are a lot more places which will let you plink with a .22 than with centerfire rounds.

It depends on how you show that snobbery. Looking down on someone at the range whose sole firearm is a Hi Point .380 is pretty negative. I try to make a point of helping those folks out. But looking down at the fellow with 42 accessories and rails on rails on his M4-gery is perfectly acceptable. Just kidding. Those folks need education too! Seriously, I think that having preferences based on our experience is normal, and not to be sneered at. Believing that a certain brand, style, or configuration of firearm somehow makes you a better person is absurd. If you think like that, you might want to examine yourself a bit more closely.

Glad you're here! After being a part of the shooting community for over 30 years, I feel the same way. For a while, I was afraid that shooters would end up being a group of old farts. But I'm seeing a whole lot of younger shooters that I am proud to have part of the group. Most of the avid shooters I know are eager to welcome young or inexperienced people to our sports. Just avoid having those pencils up your nose on the range! ;-)

You have discovered the reason why most people have an engagement period of 6 months to a year before getting married. I cannot tell you how many times people I have known (including myself) have discovered behavior that destroys relationships. I was stupid and actually believed the "I'll never do it again" speech. She may truly mean it, but she is lying to herself. If it was a one-time thing, that is different. But what you describe does not sound like it is just idle curiosity. One tactic you might take is to tell her that you have nothing to hide. Offer to give her access to all of your information. (not passwords, just access) show her around, let her tell you where she wants to look. Make sure you allow plenty of time to satisfy her curiosity. Then ask her to do the same for you. If you get a refusal, or she tries to distract you or lead you elsewhere, then you know she is really hiding something. In that case, RUN, do not walk, away.
