He may have 'made millions', but if he's looking for a state job in order to get the health benefits, he certainly did't keep millions! And that brings up another point. I have to find it reprehensible that he is looking to stiff the taxpayers for his poor decisions. State meployees are suposed to give the taxpayers value for their money. And we are supposed to believe that Bob Pope will be able to give us enough value for the work he does on a made-up position to offset the salary plus benefits he will receive? I'm not buying that. And we should be telling our reps that they should not be buying it either!

They have seperate rifle and pistol ranges. You can use both with one admission. They have basic targets, but you will probably prefer to use your own. All ranges have post holes at various distances. The handgun range is 5, 7, 10, and 15 yards IIRC. You can also shoot .22 long-guns on the handgun range to get sighted in. The rifle range has post holes at various distances as well, with a max of 100 yards. They have two positions with a 200 yard max. If you want to use them, call first as they are usually already reserved.

Romney will be the Republican candidate. We can only hope that he will do better than McCain. If you trust Romeny, you are ignorant, stupid, or evil. His track record is entirely different than his rhetoric. He is a big-spending, big-government liberal. the best thing that can be said about him is that he is better than Obama. That's a VERY low standard to beat.

Ron Ramsey, Debra Maggert, and other key Republicans have decided that you cannot be trusted to have a firearm in your car if it is parked in a parking lot. The complete list: Representatives voting aye (voting to kill) were: Brooks H ®, Casada ®, Cobb ®, Dunn ®, Harwell ®, Haynes ®, Johnson P ®, Maggart ®, McCormick ®, McDaniel ®, McManus ®, Niceley ®, Ramsey ®, Roach ®, Sexton ® If your representative is on this list, I would ask them why they should go back to Nashville next winter since they obviously cannot tell that the right to defend your life is a higher priority than some corporations wish to keep people from leaving guns in their cars in a parking lot.

The receiver and barrel are original Mark I and correct for each other. It was arsenal rebuilt at Benicia Arsenal, probably prior to WWII. a very nice rifle, but not an unfired Mark I. As DMark said, it also does not have the original Mark I internal parts. From the M1903.com website: "The Mark 1 cutoff has a series of cuts on the inner surface which engage the Pederson device and lock it into the receiver. It works normally when used with the regular bolt. The spindle also has a different profile, and its head will have screwdriver cut at the back end. The Mark 1 sear has a separate inner piece, which moves in the opposite direction of the normal sear, to fire the Pederson device, while the regular sear works as usual with the normal bolt. The trigger is much the same as a normal trigger, but has a slightly different profile (a slight flat at the rear) to work with the Mark 1 sear."

The WWI-style grips are not a problem as long as they are quality and wood. That rear sight milling is the big detractor. I'd say it will take about a $100-150 hit because of that.

IF it is truly 'new' and not a rebuilt rifle, then it would be worth a lot of money. A LOT of the Mark I rifles have been arsenal overhauled and may look factory new, but are not. A re-arsenalled rifle is worth about $1000. Blue Book says more, but I'm going by what I have seen actually selling at auction and shows lately. Original Mark I rifles should have barrel dates of 1918-1919. There is a lot of information on these rifles on the 'net. After you look around at some of the specialized sites, if you still think that it's really new and not re-arsenalled, contact an expert. The one on the Cabelas site has a lacquered stock (Ugh), looks re-arsenalled, and is over-priced by about 80%. Typical for Cabelas.

The most valuable piece of property anyone has is their own life. It is not replaceable. When weighed against the very minor issue of a land-owner who prefers not to see guns, but cannot suffer any damages as a result of this bill, being able to defend your life is much more important. The right to defend your life trumps almost any other issue. I am sorry to see Bob use irrational arguments in order to curry favor with those who will use him for political gain.

Try a Taurus 941 UltraLite in .22 mag. From the factory, the trigger pull can be a bight stiff, but it can be esily lightened and smoothed out. Eight rounds of .22mag is nothing to sneeze at. Ruger also makes the LCR in a .22LR, 8-shot version. S&W makes the M351PD which is a 7-shot .22WMR. Charter Arms is just a six-shot, but it's stainless, model 72224 Pathfinder I'd be tempted to try out the Taurus or Ruger. The Ruger is only a .22lr, but it's very light and compact. If she can manage the trigger pull on the .38 LCR, the .22 should be lighter.

Does your girlfriend/wife know the combo to your safe?
1gewehr replied to glowdotGlock's topic in General Chat
Not exactly accurate. She cannot have 'possession'. You can leave it on the coffee table or kitchen counter, and she can legally move it out of her way when you aren't there. That is not considered possession. If she actually uses it while you are away, it's a different story. -
Bank of America to gun company: Find another bank
1gewehr replied to D3vo's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I am in the process of ending my BoA accounts. Not an easy thing to do. I'm looking for a local bank that didn't take any Federal money during the bailouts or stimulus. There are several good candidates. -
When thinking about the price of surplus ammo keep this in mind; What is cheap today is not necessarily cheap tomorrow. Likewise, what is expensive today may be cheaper later. I have watched most surplus prices go through high and low cycles. For 8mm Mauser in particular, it has gotten cheap, then expensive, then cheap again. There is still a LOT of 8mm in inventories overseas. We just need a State Department that will allow it in the country.

2nd Degree Murder, this is what it looks like in TN
1gewehr replied to Worriedman's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
There are other women that he was stalking as well. Wise should have gotten the death penalty. He is a cunning killer who has spent the past several years in prison trying to present himself as crazy. That got him 2nd degree instead of 1st degree murder. Now, he will spend the nexrt 5-6 years trying to present the image of the perfect prisoner so he can get out on parole for good behaviour. This man should never see another day of freedom! -
What do you want to do with it? Plinking, defense, target shooting, hunting? The intended use wil help narrow down your choices. For home defense and cheap plinking, you might consider a .38/.357 lever-action rifle. The .38 target loads are pretty cheap ($175/1000), easy and cheap to reload, and very accurate. The full-power .357 develops about 150fps more from a rifle barrel than a pistol. It makes a nice small-game or home defense weapon. For 8mm Mauser ammo, here are some inexpensive choices: Reloadable: http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=AP8FMJ198&name=Prvi+Partizan+PPU+8mm+Mauser+FMJ+198grn+20rd+Box&groupid=42 http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/2SB33181-1.html http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ammunition/rifle-ammunition/8mm-mauser/prvi-8mm-mauser-198gr-fmj-bt-box-of-20.html Surplus: http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/product_info.php/pName/630rds-8mm-mauser-yugo-military-m75-sniper-190gr-fmj-ammo/manufacturers_id/12?osCsid=ant05cri88b9k5rg7m4s25asc2 http://www.southernohiogun.com/ammo-mags-more/ammunition/8mm-yugo-15rd-box-on-5rd-stripper-clip.html

Storage, organization and stockpiling. How do you do it?
1gewehr replied to a topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Surplus ammo is in their original sealed cases. Newer factory ammo is sorted by caliber and stored in USGI .50 steel ammo cans with a label on the front opening handle. The newer plastic 25mm cans are also nice. Reloads are in boxes or inserts packed in 5-gallon hard plastic kitty litter buckets. Buckets are labelled. The two biggest problems for ammo storage are heat and moisture. Don't store ammo in hot sheds or garages. If you have a cool, but damp place for storage, use sealed plastic containers. A tip is to not to seal containers on a hot, humid day. The less air, the better as ALL air has moisture in it, even on a dry day. Using the silica packets is always a good idea as it draws moisture from the air. -
Does your girlfriend/wife know the combo to your safe?
1gewehr replied to glowdotGlock's topic in General Chat
My wife knows the combination. Like was said above, if you have any hesitation about giving your girlfriend/fiancee the combination, then you need to keep looking for a partner. I also have a sealed packet stored with my attorney that contains my will, safe combination, computer passwords, etc. To be opened only in the event of my death. -
I have an older GemTech Outback. Last fall I sent it back to GemTech to be upgraded to current specs. I had it back in two weeks, completely cleaned, rebuilt and very quiet! The price was very reasonable including a titanium blast baffle. GemTech is known for excellent customer service and excellent quality.

Romney is NOT a conservative by anyone's measure. He is a Republican Party creature, who believes in big-government solutions. Still, he has one major defining characteristic that will get him my vote in November; he is not a communist. Yes, he is the 'lesser of two evils'. And not a whole lot 'lesser'. But I will vote for him to oppose an Obama 2nd term, and also do my best to ensure that the House and Senate have as many conservatives as possible. To me, that seems to be our best course.

A few updates: 1) The No.4 was also made with machined precision sights in addition to a stamped ladder sight and the flip-over two-position. The machined sight is an excellent sight. 2) A comma would help understand SMLE. It is actually "Short, Magazine Lee-Enfield". There was also a "Long, Lee-Enfield" rifle. The word 'short' or 'long' refers to rifle length, not the magazine size. The original military load for the .303 cartridge is a 174gr FMJ bullet at about 2500fps. This is just a hair less powerful than the US .30-06 cartridge, and roughly equal to 8mm Mauser and 7.62x54 Russian. Surplus bullets are tail-heavy and known for violent tumbling when they hit something while still retaining excellent penetration. BTW, in 1916, British Sgt. Snoxall recorded 38 hits on a 12-in. bull at 300 yards in the space of sixty seconds. Tests where the rifle was rapidly loaded in order to fire as many rounds as possible in one minute, dubbed by participants, 'the mad minute'. No other hand-operated bolt action service rifle can claim such a record.

I've seen them on GunBroker from time to time. You will also need a new recoil spring for reliable operation. The 9mm Largo is a bit more powerful than 9mm Luger.

Either the Finnish M39 Mosin or the Swiss K31 would be my choice. M39: Known for accuracy, best of all the Mosin models. Still an excellent valu for $250 or less. While you can shoot cheap surplus ammo for plinking, you will probably want to spend some money on Wolf Gold or similar ammo for best accuracy. K31: The Swiss Watch of bolt-actions! Amazingly fast and slick straight-pull action. Probably the highest standard of manufacture of any rifle you are likely to ever own. Swiss ammo is also very high quality and you will want to buy at least 100rds as it will be a serious collector's item some day (as will the rifle). Prvi also makes good ammo. Both of these rifles were made in relatively small quantities and we are unlikely to ever see any more imports. If you are going to shoot a lot, get the M39 as you can shoot inexpensive surplus ammo. If your goal is accuracy or appreciation of excellent machinery, the K31 will please you. The price on both will only continue to climb.

Everybody tells me how important it is to vote....
1gewehr replied to gregintenn's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
This could well be our last chance to have a chance of stopping a centralized, intrusive Big Government. right now, barely over 50% of the eligible voters actually pay any income tax. By a remarkable coincidence the percentage of the population receiving some form of government money (payroll, welfare, EBT, Medicaid, MediCare, etc) is also just about 50%. What do you think will happen when over 50% are receiving government money? Will they vote to eliminate that source of income? It takes a lot of moral courage to cast a vote that will cause you personal harm but benefit the country. If you are receiving any kind of government money, you had better plan on how to survive without it. Because one way or another, that gravy train is going to end. Either we will change it voluntarily, or our economy will crash. No middle ground there. -

How do you move your safe around?
1gewehr replied to alwaysonjohn's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
If you can, let the pros do it. If you do it yourself, here are the rules: 1) Plan EVERY move in advance, and in great detail. Measure twice, plan every corner and turn. 2) Have someone else look at your plan and find problems with it. If you will be moving over a supported floor (not concrete), go under the floor and make sure there are no cracked supports or other weakness. 3) Make sure that everything is in place and ready to be used before you move it an inch. 4) Make a large cardboard box the size of your safe. Do a practice run. You will be surprised how many problems are found this way! Turning corners and going up or down a step (or more) are usually the biggest problems. 5) Go very slowly. Being in a hurry leads to injuries. Injuries involving 1/2 ton safes are rarely minor. I've moved a few for others before I got my own. I've moved my own safe twice (with help), and both times it was a near thing to having fingers, toes, or other parts crushed. I helped a buddy who had a 900lb safe that found a weak spot in a floor once. Getting jacks under it in a 18" crawlspace was not much fun and more than a little scary.
