Does your girlfriend/wife know the combo to your safe?
1gewehr replied to glowdotGlock's topic in General Chat
My wife knows the combination. Like was said above, if you have any hesitation about giving your girlfriend/fiancee the combination, then you need to keep looking for a partner. I also have a sealed packet stored with my attorney that contains my will, safe combination, computer passwords, etc. To be opened only in the event of my death. -
I have an older GemTech Outback. Last fall I sent it back to GemTech to be upgraded to current specs. I had it back in two weeks, completely cleaned, rebuilt and very quiet! The price was very reasonable including a titanium blast baffle. GemTech is known for excellent customer service and excellent quality.

Romney is NOT a conservative by anyone's measure. He is a Republican Party creature, who believes in big-government solutions. Still, he has one major defining characteristic that will get him my vote in November; he is not a communist. Yes, he is the 'lesser of two evils'. And not a whole lot 'lesser'. But I will vote for him to oppose an Obama 2nd term, and also do my best to ensure that the House and Senate have as many conservatives as possible. To me, that seems to be our best course.

A few updates: 1) The No.4 was also made with machined precision sights in addition to a stamped ladder sight and the flip-over two-position. The machined sight is an excellent sight. 2) A comma would help understand SMLE. It is actually "Short, Magazine Lee-Enfield". There was also a "Long, Lee-Enfield" rifle. The word 'short' or 'long' refers to rifle length, not the magazine size. The original military load for the .303 cartridge is a 174gr FMJ bullet at about 2500fps. This is just a hair less powerful than the US .30-06 cartridge, and roughly equal to 8mm Mauser and 7.62x54 Russian. Surplus bullets are tail-heavy and known for violent tumbling when they hit something while still retaining excellent penetration. BTW, in 1916, British Sgt. Snoxall recorded 38 hits on a 12-in. bull at 300 yards in the space of sixty seconds. Tests where the rifle was rapidly loaded in order to fire as many rounds as possible in one minute, dubbed by participants, 'the mad minute'. No other hand-operated bolt action service rifle can claim such a record.

I've seen them on GunBroker from time to time. You will also need a new recoil spring for reliable operation. The 9mm Largo is a bit more powerful than 9mm Luger.

Either the Finnish M39 Mosin or the Swiss K31 would be my choice. M39: Known for accuracy, best of all the Mosin models. Still an excellent valu for $250 or less. While you can shoot cheap surplus ammo for plinking, you will probably want to spend some money on Wolf Gold or similar ammo for best accuracy. K31: The Swiss Watch of bolt-actions! Amazingly fast and slick straight-pull action. Probably the highest standard of manufacture of any rifle you are likely to ever own. Swiss ammo is also very high quality and you will want to buy at least 100rds as it will be a serious collector's item some day (as will the rifle). Prvi also makes good ammo. Both of these rifles were made in relatively small quantities and we are unlikely to ever see any more imports. If you are going to shoot a lot, get the M39 as you can shoot inexpensive surplus ammo. If your goal is accuracy or appreciation of excellent machinery, the K31 will please you. The price on both will only continue to climb.

Everybody tells me how important it is to vote....
1gewehr replied to gregintenn's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
This could well be our last chance to have a chance of stopping a centralized, intrusive Big Government. right now, barely over 50% of the eligible voters actually pay any income tax. By a remarkable coincidence the percentage of the population receiving some form of government money (payroll, welfare, EBT, Medicaid, MediCare, etc) is also just about 50%. What do you think will happen when over 50% are receiving government money? Will they vote to eliminate that source of income? It takes a lot of moral courage to cast a vote that will cause you personal harm but benefit the country. If you are receiving any kind of government money, you had better plan on how to survive without it. Because one way or another, that gravy train is going to end. Either we will change it voluntarily, or our economy will crash. No middle ground there. -

An Ajack SS-Dientsglas K98 sniper scope may be worth some money. But, there have been some excellent fakes. Clear photos of the markings and reticle can help. The experts on this stuff hang out here: http://www.k98k.com/forum/showthread.php?t=130 -
How do you move your safe around?
1gewehr replied to alwaysonjohn's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
If you can, let the pros do it. If you do it yourself, here are the rules: 1) Plan EVERY move in advance, and in great detail. Measure twice, plan every corner and turn. 2) Have someone else look at your plan and find problems with it. If you will be moving over a supported floor (not concrete), go under the floor and make sure there are no cracked supports or other weakness. 3) Make sure that everything is in place and ready to be used before you move it an inch. 4) Make a large cardboard box the size of your safe. Do a practice run. You will be surprised how many problems are found this way! Turning corners and going up or down a step (or more) are usually the biggest problems. 5) Go very slowly. Being in a hurry leads to injuries. Injuries involving 1/2 ton safes are rarely minor. I've moved a few for others before I got my own. I've moved my own safe twice (with help), and both times it was a near thing to having fingers, toes, or other parts crushed. I helped a buddy who had a 900lb safe that found a weak spot in a floor once. Getting jacks under it in a 18" crawlspace was not much fun and more than a little scary. -
I'm glad that someone has decided to maintain some standards! It's private property and they can mandate dresses and ties if they want! I remind the kids of what low, baggy pants really means! In prison, those low pants without a belt are a sign that you are someone's 'bitch'. It provides easy access for the Master and whoever else he allows to ride his bitch. So, instead of showing that you are a mean, mother****, it just shows that you were somebody else's sexual toy in prison. That usually gets them to pull up their pants.

This is no departure for Mr. Cosby. He has long been a proponent of gun control. I have a lot of respect for Mr. Cosby. He has done great things for the black community in encouraging education, responsibility, self-discipline, and ethical behaviour. I regret that he is wrong on this issue.

Everybody tells me how important it is to vote....
1gewehr replied to gregintenn's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
This November we will truly be presented a choice between two 'evils'. One is very clearly a greater evil than the other. Here is my take on why you should vote for Romeny. 1) The Supreme Court thing. Romney is unlikely to appoint another Thomas, Scalia, or Rogers. The best we can hope for is another Kennedy. But we know Obama will appoint radical Marxists to the bench. Against another Kaga or Sotomeyor, I'd prefer Kennedy. 2) Vote for the best Senators and Representatives you can. Having a strongly Constitutional House and Senate is really the best path regardless of who is President. Remember, ALL laws come from Congress. ALL spending bills must originate in the House. 3) Romney is a Republican Party hack. He is unlikely to do anything very controversial. He will try to stay in the middle of the road and appease the majority. If Congress sends him legislation, he is unlikely to veto it. Obama has shown that he will use bullying, threats and violence to achieve his goals. So, yes, Romney is not a force for 'good'. But he is an 'evil' that will be easier to contain and minimize than Obama. A pox on the Republican leadership for saddling us with that man. I do not believe for a moment that he will be good for the USA. But the damage he will do is probably much less than what Obama has promised to do. -
Unless you are determined to do this for the experience of building shot-barrelled firearm, I would recommend that you just buy a AR-pistol from a reputable manufacturer. If the funds are the issue, just save your money until you have enough. The benefits are: 1) If you have problems (and short barrels are known for them), then you will have a manufacturers warrently to make it right. 2) A manufacturer should have parts of proven quality and durability versus having you find out otherwise on your own. 3) Buy a pistol first as you do not have to deal with the wait-time of NFA paperwork. You can always make it a Short-Barrelled Rifle later by filing the paperwork and tax. 4) If you find that you are not crazy about the really short barrels, you will not have wasted money on an NFA stamp. 5) If you end up selling it a a later date, a manufacturer's build is easier to sell than a home-built (and at a higher price). Once you play with it enough to decide that you really DO want a SBR, then all you need to do is file the paperwork (and pay the $200). Once you have an approval, all you need to do is add the stock. Which usually is only a 10-minute job.

I'm about halfway between GGC and Stones River as well. But since GGC does not allow full-auto, that's a deal-breaker. I reload as well, and the folks at Stones River have never had an issue with me picking up my brass.

The 8th TN is a blue unit based in E TN. You might check them out. Most units will change coats to make the numbers at an event look better. If they didn't do this then events in GA and the Carolinas would be 90% Confederate, which would make for a very silly reenactment. Some units are known for being pretty radical (like the example in 'Confederates in the Attic'). And even in each unit, members will have a wide variety of interests. The best way to do it is to shop around and hang out with a group at a reeneactment or three until you decide who you feel most comfortable with. Most units are very willing to loan you the gear to allow you to try things out. This also lets you find out what types of gear are the best and where to get them. Some units even have agreements with certain sutlers. Here is a directory of TN reenacting groups. Some of the links are old and may not work, but most are valid: http://www.reenactmenthq.com/units.asp?i=20&p=12&s=

I had an early S&W M59 and never really liked it. The trigger was much worse than my M39, and it seemed less accurate. I never bought one of the later models, but everyone says that S&W made some serious improvements. Maybe I'll snag a M659 or 5906 if I see one at the right price.

Barrel length is measured differently in a revolver vs an automatic. The revolver barrel is measured from the cylinder gap forward. An automatic barrel includes the chamber. So, for a revolver and automatic both having 4" barrels, the revolver has an extra 1.5" of effective barrel length.

Anyone ever wrongfully denied on for purchase?
1gewehr replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I never give my SSN. I was denied once last summer, appealed, and was approved a week later. No reason for the initial denial was given. I do not have a common last name, and as far as I know am the only person with my name in the US. Go figure. No problem since then either. I figure that it was just an error at some point. -
During the 1968 Detroit riots, one suburban police chief put a .50 M2 machinegun sandbagged on the roof of the cop-shop. That town had NO problems. Also, you might remember the 1992 LA riots when Korean shop-keepers stood in their doors and on the roofs displaying their rifles and shotguns. Deterrence works pretty well. I also agree with the disapproval of militarization of police forces. "To serve and protect" seems to have become "To force and intimidate". When I was young, a local policeman corrected me when I referred to him as 'law enforcement'. He told me he was a 'peace officer', and that his job was to keep the peace, and protect people from danger. He said that a 'law enforcement officer' just has to act like a robot, enforcing laws without regard to whether he is actually helping or hurting people. A 'Peace Officer' was responsible for using his head to determine what was really the best way to handle things. Sometimes that meant looking the other way over unintentional stupidity, or taking someone to see their father instead a judge. I miss the days when men were proud to call themselves "Peace Officers".

Question about inheriting guns across state lines
1gewehr replied to Bassoneer's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
"Registered Magnum" refers to the first S&W .357 Magnum revolvers. Very high-dollar collectable pistols!! Made 1935-1939, pretty much a special order pistol at the time. As far as involving a dealer, I do not recall seeing anything that allows an interstate transfer of firearms without having a dealer involved in the receiving state. A 4473 would be required, and a TICS check. Obviously, such a transfer to a 'prohibited person' (juvenile, felon, etc) would be prohibited. I looked in the regs and could find no exemptions for estates except a waiver of the NFA transfer tax. (NFA= machineguns, suppressors, cannon, etc) -
Ditto.

No. Obama is a White Negro-ARAB! -
I find it interesting how many folks here believe in slavery. What else do you call forcing someone to work wihout fair compensation against their will? Whether it's making a doctor treat someone's runny nose while knowing he won't get paid for it, or forcing someone to give up 2 years serving at the whims of Congress, it's still stealing part of someone's life. I served in the military with the last of the draftees in the 1970's. They were about as motivated and enthusiastic as you would expect slaves to be. The income tax is interesting. The 16th Amendment says Congress can tax the income of individual Americans. But Article I, Section 9 states: "No Capitation, or other direct, Tax shall be laid, unless in Proportion to the Census or Enumeration herein before directed to be taken." So, it seems to me that the Constitution says that EVERY person must be taxed the same. For 2009, that means that in order to collect the same $865 Billion from the approximately 310 million residents, each man, woman, and child will need to pony up $2790, regardless of income. Considering that right now about 50% of all people with income pay NO income tax, that's a huge difference. So, on 'a' through 'f', my answer is 'no'.

Distributors do not 'hoard'. Profit for a distributor comes from how often they can turn over their inventory. Stock that sits still is lost profit. For a distributor, the ideal day is when inventory is delivered in the morning and shipped out in the afternoon. for a manufacturer, the situation is similar. They want to have raw materials arrive just as they are needed, and have inventory sold as soon as it is made into product. When demand spikes, like now, it means that the dealers place more orders with distrubutors, who place more orders with manufacturers, who place more orders with their suppliers. When materials are received, they are manufactured as quickly a possible. If the manufacturer is already at 90-100% capacity, then there are additional delays as added machinery or people are brought in. Some things like ammo have very long lead times. That is because the larger the lot of a particular load, the cheaper it is to make. But again, they do not want to make too much, as inventory that is not sold is lost profit. These are the reasons Production Schedulers and Purchasing Managers have white, or no, hair!

We have a Beretta Neos which has been both accurate and reliable. It has a built-in rail. For a bit (2X) more money, you could look at a HighStandard Victor. It's hard to get more accurate than that without going to a match-only pistol for a LOT more money, and it's already drilled and tapped for a rail. For about the same money as the High Standard, there is the S&W M41. Rails are available for it as well, and it is as accurate as the High Standard. In my experience, the H-S is a bit more reliable with different ammo. If you go with the S&W, find out what ammo it likes and pile it deep. My advice is to go to a range that rents a selection of .22 pistols and try a bunch out. See what you like or don't like.
