2. Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, a Pulitzer Prize nominated author, West Point psychology professor, and without a doubt the world’s foremost expert on human aggression and violence gives his Five D's on protecting our schools

1. Denial — Denial is the enemy and it has no survival value, said Grossman.

2. Deter — Put police officers in schools, because with just one officer assigned to a school, the probability of a mass murder in that school drops to almost zero

3. Detect — We’re talking about plain old fashioned police work here. The ultimate achievement for law enforcement is the crime that didn’t happen, so giving teachers and administrators regular access to cops is paramount.

4. Delay — Various simple mechanisms can be used by teachers and cops to put time and distance between the killers and the kids.

a. Ensure that the school/classroom have just a single point of entry. Simply locking the back door helps create a hard target.

b. Conduct your active shooter drills within (and in partnership with) the schools in your city so teachers know how to respond, and know what it looks like when you do your response.

5. Destroy — Police officers and agencies should consider the following:

a. Carry off duty. No one would tell a firefighter who has a fire extinguisher in his trunk that he’s crazy or paranoid.

b. Equip every cop in America with a patrol rifle. One chief of police, upon getting rifles for all his officers once said, “If an active killer strikes in my town, the response time will be measured in feet per second.”

c. Put smoke grenades in the trunk of every cop car in America. Any infantryman who needs to attack across open terrain or perform a rescue under fire deploys a smoke grenade. A fire extinguisher will do a decent job in some cases, but a smoke grenade is designed to perform the function.

d. Have a “go-to-war bag” filled with lots of loaded magazines and supplies for tactical combat casualty care.

e. Use helicopters. Somewhere in your county you probably have one or more of the following: medevac, media, private, national guard, coast guard rotors.

f. Employ the crew-served, continuous-feed, weapon you already have available to you (a firehouse) by integrating the fire service into your active shooter training. It is virtually impossible for a killer to put well-placed shots on target while also being blasted with water at 300 pounds per square inch.

g. Armed citizens can help. Think United 93. Whatever your personal take on gun control, it is all but certain that a killer set on killing is more likely to attack a target where the citizens are unarmed, rather than one where they are likely to encounter an armed citizen response.
3. I owned the Taurus Tracker 44 mag which is similar to the Rossi and was a fine revolver. No issues with it at all. Only reason I sold it was it was too big for daily carry. The Rossi looks like it would be a nice carry gun with a hell of an impact.

Despite the manual safety, that trigger scares the heck out of me. Nice looking derringer, though!
I took it to the range the weekend i got it and the trigger is actually very nice. Most Derringers do not have trigger guards so this is not that different. What I discovered is that the trigger has to be pulled 95% to get it to discharge. So even with the safty off, you still got to want to shoot it to get it to discharge. Its a very safe gun.
5. Best Compact 1911 for the money. I mistakenly sold mine to a friend and still regret it although my Colt New Agent helps to ease the pain. I carried mine in a skeletal slide holster like this http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/3-0629892
6. I've been good. Or at least that's what I told myself when I started looking for my early Xmas present to myself. After a month of searching for one in good condition, I finally found it on gun broker. This was my first online gun purchase and am super pleased with the transaction. The seller shipped it the same day I paid him and it got here in two days. It is a beautiful gun and should be a lot of fun to shoot. Its an American Derringer DA38. I love derringer style guns and to have one that's double action and in .38spl has got me stoked. I can hardly wait to get it to the range and put some rounds through it.

Stupid talk to text smartphone!!! Sorry guys hope you can decipher.

WHERE THE HECK DID TATERS,COME IN? I meant taser! Lol

I understood you and agree. Constitutional carry is a nice concept but I prefer knowing that some training has been given and basic qualifications have been met. I am glad to know that there is someone else out there that see the merit in other forms of defensive weapons.

What's the logic behind removing open carrying in lieu of carrying a knife? :screwy:
Well, carrying a concealed weapon (be it a knife, stick, gun, blackjack or whatever) is not going to cause the manager of the waffle house I am eating in to ask me to leave like the gentleman sitting next to me was when another customer complained about the XD strapped to his side. Although the waffle house was not posted the manager still had the right to deny him service after the complaint was made. I on the other hand was able to finish my eggs in peace while still having my S&W Bodyguard covered by my outer shirt. My question to you would be what is the point in letting people know you have a weapon? I carry not because I feel the need to excersise my 2A right, I carry to protect my family and, God forbid, I ever have to use a gun for defense, I prefer the BG hear it before he sees it.

Now my intent was not to deny others open carry, for me it is not that big a deal. For others it seems to be. Thats fine, lets rephrase the question. What are the opinions of modifying the current HCP law to something like a WCP (weapons carry permit) law?

It would be wise to not carry a stick to fend off dogs and whatnot but to instead carry a stick to assist your stride. Tennessee law provides protection for someone who is carrying a stick to aid their walking if said stick is used in a defensive manner. This way you still get your stick without stirring the pot and letting the politicians have more say so about what and how you can carry period. I would bet you would be very hard pressed to find a single legitimate case of anyone being prosecuted for carrying a walking stick. I see people carrying golf clubs and baseball bats while walking on a regular basis. Sorry if I'm coming off as rough I just get defensive when there is talk of taking away any of my rights for any reason and I really feel like you are picking a bone concerning carrying a walking stick.
What are you talking about? How am I picking a bone about carrying a walking stick? No one is talking about taking away any of your rights. The question asked was opinions concerning HCP vs Concealed weapons permits. I don't have the ability to take away your rights so chill out. As far as the stick, if you read my first post you will see I am in favor of being able to carry a stick. I am in favor of being able to carry any weapon you think is best for defending yourself. If open carry is the main concern then lets rephrase the question of HCP with WCP (weapons carry permit). Maybe that way we can get some sanity in the responses.
10. As stated, I would not choose to open carry but I do not have anything against those that do. I just find it funny that carrying a stick to ward off dogs constitutes a club and can ge considered "for the perpose of going armed" and therefor ilegal. I also believe the word "Arms" should mean any and all weapons that can be used for self defense. As for the suggestion that an OC right is a defense against brandishing a weapon if you are "printing". The carry laws in both TN and FL do not make it legal to carry a firearm, they only act as a defense for breaking the law. I know it's semantics but it is the play of words that make or break our rights.

*sigh* beautiful, absolutely beautiful, sort of reminds me of of my Colt Officer ACP, congrats man she sounds like a keeper, don't make the same mistake that I did and trade er off!

This one is not going any where. I plan to wear the finish off carrying it before it gets passed on when I am too old and feable to carry it safely. lol
12. I am not sure if this subject has been touched on before but after reading the laws for Florida and Kentucy on their Concealed Weapons Permits I was wonding if it wouldn't be better to have something similar in place of Tennessee's HCP law. I don't ever think I would open carry and the thought of being able to carry different self defence weapons appeals to me greatly. I was also wonding what the thoughts of other TGOers would be on TN adopting a simiar law allowing the carry of switchblades, batons, brass knuckes and the like would be. I welcome oppinions for and againts and please give reasons supporting your opinion. Thanks
13. I have a compact compound hunting bow that I keep by the bug out supplies. I am fairly accurate with it out to about 40 yards. I also keep a .177 cal air rifle that can be used to take small game (rabbits, birds, squirrels and such). It is much quieter than say a .22 and the pellets are very cheap. It is accurate to about 50 yards.
14. Last week I asked if it was insane to sell two guns to buy one. Well the answer is no as long as the new gun is a Colt New Agent .45acp. I have been wanting one for the last year or so and finally broke down last weekend at the gun show. I must say these are great looking 1911's and are very light. I know a lot of folks have issues with feeding and picky ammo with a lot of the 3" 1911's out there but the New Agent is not one of them, It functioned flawlessly with the cheapest ammo I could find. It ate all 50 rounds of Blazer Aluminum and never once belched or hicupped. Each time the trigger was pulled, the gun went bang. I also fed a few mags of Winchester JHP just to see how it would react and it never skipped a beat. Accuracy took a little time to master due to the trench sight down the top of the slide, About 20 rounds into the fun I found the sweet spot and spent the rest of the time punching out the center of the target. When I got bored always hitting center, I decided to see if I could take out the little numbers going up the center line until I fired my last few rounds. All I can say is WOW! Colt hit the nail on the head with this little number. Light, accurate and shoots .45s all in a compact frame. Got to say I almost went with a Kimber Pro Carry II but I do not regret getting the New Agent instead. Great gun!

First time shooting the Colt at about 10 yards out feeding it the cheap stuff.
