That all depends on what kind of 1911 you are talking about, how much are you wanting to spend?

Get a 5 inch Government or a 4.25 Commander, either of those will make you very happy. If the 1911 is built well you will not see any accuracy, or reliability difference when comparing a Government to Commander model, I own and love both but will never own one with a slide less than 4.25 inches when they are built less than that you are shortening the length of travel the slide has and you are risking reliability The exception to this for me is Wilson Combat, Bill knows how to build his 1911's with 4.00 inch barrels and makes them 100% reliable

I have Oakley's, Maui Jim, Ray Ban, and a few other brands, in my opinion the Costa Del Mar 580 lens are the absolute best made. I work offshore and the polarization is a big deal to Me, I have Blue lenses and Green lenses 580 models and I like them so much they are all I will ever buy from now on

I have had mine for a few years and it is awesome, you will not regret it

If you have the means, the Ed Brown their customer service is outstanding but having owned 5 of his pistols, I have never had to use it

People have often asked me why I carry a pistol that cost nearly $3K, my answer is just that I carry the best pistol possible to protect my family. I know I cant take it with me when I pass and I consider all of my guns tools (I do not care about scratches, ETC), God forbid I ever have to use it in a defensive situation but if I do I know it will do what is asked of it. You DO NOT need to spend a lot of money to get a reliable defensive handgun, I have owned and still do own cheaper guns that I would trust the lives of my family to. I just prefer the 1911 and with that model you do get what you pay for, For me it is worth it to have a pistol tuned and built exactly the way I want it so it is worth the extra money to get one that way, Life is short and if you have the means without making your family suffer in anyway, I see no reason not to buy whatever type of gun that you desire
