I have owned several 1911's and have used just about every grip on the market. A few years ago when an Ed Brown Executive Elite was my carry weapon, I settled with Simonich Gunner grips. These were the very best grips for weapon retention as they stuck to my hand to the point of hurting, in fact I had to use sandpaper to make them manageable without gloves.
For the last few years my carry weapon has been my custom built Nighthawk 1911 commander. The grips that came on it are VZ Gatorback, they look very nice on the pistol and have provided me a few years of great service. A month or so ago I decided to treat the Nighthawk to some new grips, I searched everywhere for original Simonich Gunner grips. I found several that I could have bought but my pistol is Bobtailed, so this presented a problem as I could not find any.
I called around and found out that VZ bought the right to produce and sell "Gunner Grips" I was very reluctant to try them as I heard they were nowhere close to the Original design. Fact of the matter is that when the man behind the grips passed away, his widow sold the rights to Mick Strider of Strider knives. The Strider Gunners were not the same either as Mick and company changed a few things. So a couple of weeks ago I ordered the VZ's and figured I would try them out.
These are by far the Best 1911 grips that I have ever used. They are just right and do not make your hands bleed if not sandpapered like the 1st generation ones did. I ordered the Military Brown for my pistol and they are on it now. The color of them looked more tan than brown when I ordered them and I just cannot get used to it. I just ordered another set in Predator Green that I think I will like much better. Like I said I find these to be the absolute best 1911 grips that I have ever used, and if any of you own a Bobtailed 1911 and want an awesome set of grips in Military Brown color, I will give you an great deal if you PM me
