Woman Stabbed to Death on Knoxville Greenway
JReedEsq replied to Oh Shoot's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
You very well could be right, but the significant age difference between the perpetrator and victim make it seem a little less likely (to me) than if they were closer in age... I don't consider that a bad part of town at all but my wife and I always try to maintain a lot of situational awareness when we take our kids to the Greenways. If I'm not around my wife prefers the Farragut Greenways because they don't have the type of heavily-wooded secluded areas where people can hide. My wife is very cautious due to incidents on the Knoxville Greenways dating all the way back to the 1990s... -
Farragut/Knoxville here.

Fatal stabbing on the Knoxville Greenway. http://wate.com/2015/05/03/police-investigate-stabbing-on-a-knox-county-greenway/ I didn't know whether to put this in "Handgun Carry and Self-Defense" or "2nd Amendment issues." I put it here due to all the recent political discussion about park carry.

Good luck on your interview!

Yup

I would guess that the Glock 22 is still the most popular issue pistol for American Police Departments. Even with the recent increases in popularity of 9mm,and M&P and the continued popularity of Sig Sauer.

April 19 Knoxville Suarez Training Group
JReedEsq replied to Cruel Hand Luke's topic in Training Discussions
We had a good group of guys, Randy is a great instructor and the weather really wasn't too bad if you don't mind getting a little bit dirty. I was very appreciative of the easy-ups and glad I was wearing some waterproof boots. I think everyone had fun and a few of us learned a bit about where we might be able to improve. The FAM course is humbling. I can get my rounds in the box OK, but my times are a smidge high. Of course Randy was right to suggest a lot more dry practice. My initial thought was that I have enough margin with some of my rounds that I might be able to speed up a bit and still keep rounds in the box. Then I considered what someone like TimCar86 can do. That guy was fast and was shooting through one ragged hole! Bottom line is, I need to do a lot of dry work to improve my draw and reloads. One thing I'm really proud of... Apparently I have a natural ability to consistently throw a stripped magazine into the mud directly upside-down. Happy to say this technique maximizes the mud getting into the top of the magazine for equipment testing. Glad to be a natural at something! :) -

Yes, Yes it is. Doesn't sound that hard until you get out there under the timer. -
The two craziest places I have ever driven are San Juan, Puerto Rico and San Francisco, CA.

Looking forward to this. -
Congrats on picking up the 43. Hope you love it. Based on shooting the G42 (which we picked up primarily for the wife), I believe the G43 will probably be great for a lot of people but I am not in a rush to pick one up. The G42 is very easy to be accurate for such a small gun, but it is the only Glock I have ever fired that I have unintentionally hit both the magazine release (just once-first magazine) and the slide lock (2-3 times). This is a very subjective issue but I believe my wife even hit the slide lock a time or two because her only "failures" trying to break the thing in were when it locked back with rounds still in the magazine. She pointed out to me that this was right after I told her to get her thumbs up as I emphasized to her to use as high a grip as possible to mitigate recoil. I shot the 42 again last week paying attention to my grip and couldn't replicate this problem so I believe the issue (with both of us) was thumb on the slide lock during recoil. Again I think this issue is easily resolved with training and familiarity. I can even shoot my LCP well with practice and a slightly modified grip, but for me the 26 could be as small as I can go and not have to modify my grip to account for the size of the pistol. I love that I can shoot my 17 or 19 and then pick up the 26 (that I haven't shot in 6 months) and it still feels perfect. Not sure the 43 would work the same for me (for me)...

To each their own. I see how the narrow profile would be nice, but I don't think I'd like the weight.

I will admit that I rarely carry my 17 in the summer. However, I stand by my statement that it can be concealed without too much effort. Sweaters, jackets, an untucked plaid shirt, you add any of these to a stiff belt and a Supertuck and it isn't that hard.
-
Congratulations! Ten years today for me and mine.

Not a 1911 guy so hard for me to compare Glock to 1911s. I can attest to carrying Glocks though, and I'll say that I have concealed a G17 lots, both iwb and owb. While I prefer my 19 for summertime iwb carry, those who say the 17 can't be concealed, aren't really trying...

26 all the way. You can pocket carry it with the right pants and a good kydex holster. IMHO, a square print isn't really a print. Especially with so many people carrying large phones in their pockets these days. I'm sure the 30S is nice, but it would be hard for it to knock out my Gen4 19 as my "go to" for IWB.

I dig that black'ed out look. Looks so much better than your typical Harley.

They are arguably good for the money I guess. The only thing is that if you look around you can often find the better, more improved, and works right out of the box, version of most of their pistols for only slightly more money. If you have a keen eye, you can tell which ones these are... because they say "Ruger" on the slide.

Today I finally got to the range with the G42 I traded for last Saturday. It was produced last fall and has the updated magazines. Today I ran wwb flat-nosed fmj, Remington fmj, Federal fmj, Hornady Critical Defense JHP, and Winchester PDX1 JHP through it. No problems cycling anything. It is the softest shooting small pistol I have fired. Feels more like my G17 than my LCP. I will take the wife to the range with it next week as it is "her" gun.

I was looking at a Septac handgun course this spring but coaching my son's soccer will probably prevent it. Looks like my only opportunity to do something similar will be the April 19th get together hosted by CruelHandLuke. Post up if you do a SEPTAC, Al. I'd like a review.

Once I added a plus 2 extension to a 17 mag. I dropped said magazine on the hard concrete floor of my garage; the extension popped off dumping 19 Gold Dots all over the floor. At that moment I swore off of magazine extensions. I like the XGrip sleeves that fill in the gap when you use a 17 mag in a 19 for example. I use one with a G19 mag in the left side pocket on days when I pocket carry a 26. This, of course, requires the use of cargo shorts with big pockets. It is heavy but a very convenient way to be well-armed quickly.

Just speculation but I wonder if this has to do with the weapon light issues that were reported by some Police Departments with Gen 3 .40 models. The issue was that some Gen 3 22 (and maybe 23?) models issued would fail to feed with weapon lights mounted. I seem to recall this was fixed with stronger mag springs. This could be the reason for the updated magazine markings. The only FTF issues I've had with my RTF 22 were with a TLR and one really old magazine I ended up with. I threw away that magazine that solved the problem. I guess it was made during the AWB as it was a 15 rounder that said "Law Enforcement Only." I probably picked it up out of a bargain bin somewhere.
