  1. I love this v/s that's. How else would I know that my 9mm is about the same ballistically as a pellet gun? Or that it was designed by Nazi pacificists? Or that CC is for people who are afraid to exercise their rights? Or that OC always leads to someone taking your gun away? Or that an AK is only accurate to about 20 yards? Or that a hit in the foot with a .45 is a guaranteed one-shot-stop. Or that an AR is really just an overpriced .22 with too many fancy accessories? Or that you don't have to aim a shotgun? How about OO buck won't go through walls in a HD situation although using any handgun will likely kill your neighbors? Or that the 1911 is perfect? Or that the 1911 is just for stubborn old men afraid of change? Or that my mag springs will likely fail in my pistols and no revolver has ever failed anyone, ever... Without the this v/s that forums, I wouldn't have learned all this useful knowledge... All the really good info comes out when people get emotionally involved in proving their side is right and everyone else is wrong. I'm just saying....
  2. I agree on both of these issues. The 19 was my first handgun and I don't think you can go wrong with it. Glocks are simple to operate and extremely easy to maintain. Besides, it's such a popular gun that I'm always seeing used ones advertised for near new pricing so you should be able to get near your money back if you later find something you like better. As for caliber conversion, I've heard Glock doesn't recommend it so I'd say just get a 9mm if you're worried about ammo availablilty. 9mm is still the worldwide military standard and I'm sure you'll end up buying a few more pistols if you're really worried about having a gun in any scenario, .
  3. +1; My Wife and I did the very bottom part of Alum Cave around New Years. We turned back early because I had my 18-month-old on my back and my wife was absolutely terrified that I was going to fall on icy rocks. The funny thing about the mountains is that we were able to find a trail just a few miles away that was completely dry.

    first gun glock 23

Remember that Glocks have great resale value if you were to decide to dump the 23 and get a 19. Personally, I feel far more comfortable carrying something I know I can hit with than something that will make a slightly larger hole.
  5. If you have all day to spend, the Chimney Tops trial is my favorite one in the Smokies. It's steep enough to give you a good workout, it's technical, and it has one of the best views at the end. It gets a little dangerous if you continue to the very end (past all the signs saying it's too dangerous to continue) but the view is just awesome on a clear day. When you don't have all day, there are a lot of great parks just around Knox County: Concord Park off of Northshore in West Knox County has about 4-5 miles of trail on one side and about 2 miles on the other side. It's pretty nice, and it's so close to my house that I can ride my mountain bike to the trails, ride them, and then ride home. I'll probably be there this afternoon carrying my son in a backpack since my wife is out running 22 miles in preparation for the Knoxville Marathon. You might also check out the trails at Norris near the shooting range or Haw Ridge park off Edgmore Rd in Oak Ridge. I.C. King park is nice and really close to UT but you really have to watch yourself because there is a lot of illicit activity that goes on there. Don't go alone or you will be approached by men who are thinking you are looking for a date. They mainly hang out at the parking lot and around the trailheads so once you're in the woods it's not an issue but should should definitely know to "watch your 6" at that park. We're really blessed in Knoxville to have so many great parks.
  6. An often overlooked spot is House Mountain Park on the East Edge of Knox County. We like it because it's dog friendly, unlike the National Park. Just don't OC an AK pistol.
  7. They aren't my style either, but I'd definitely keep them if I were you. You'll regret if you sell them. I probably wouldn't ever buy one, but lever action guns are pretty sweet.
  8. I'm no ballistics expert so I'm not going to argue about whether the very slightly hole of a .40 is worth carring two less rounds. As a new shooter cheaper practice ammo is more important to me. What difference does a slightly larger hole make if I'm not hitting the target well enough?
  9. Great, I'll just wait until you get it really tricked out and then I'll buy it back from you!
  10. I wish Glock would make one. I'm sure it would be ugly, but at least it would be reasonably priced, simple and reliable.
  11. I had this issue too. The Tacticool products bolt tube cover made it more comfortable, but I still couldn't get a quick sight picture with the gun. I really wanted to love the Sub2K. Unfortunately, this sight picture issue, and the general cheapness of the front sight, drove me nuts.
  12. I may end up getting another Sub 2000 at some point. It was reliable, used Glock mags, and easy to break-down and clean. That last part is important to me as 1) I'm an admitted newbie 2) I have have a family, demanding job, and other hobbies and 3) I want to spend what time I have shooting and not tinkering. I like the look and feel of the Beretta Storm so much more but I really want to have mags compatible with my Glocks. Any ideas?
  13. This makes me want a 9mm carbine. Since I own 2 9mm Glocks the Sub2k is the obvious choice for me. I had one for a while but I really wanted something else so I sold it. I liked it except I hated the cheapo front sight. Anyone have any experience with the Olympic Arms 9mm? I heard some negative info but not from anyone who's actually owned one. My KT was reliable and easy to strip/clean but I just didn't love it for some reason. I also like the look and feel of the Storm but if I'm gonna spend that much and not use my Glock mags I might as well get a .223.
  14. All joking aside; I wish you the best of luck quitting. You'll feel better and have more $$$ to spend on toys....
  15. I'm not sure about the idea that the 147 are "malfunction prone" comes from... They work just fine for me in my Glocks. I've got 16 147 grain Hornady JHPs in my IWB rig right now. For me, I can't tell any difference in shooting them v/s the WWB that I practice with. As previously stated, however, I don't plan on anything being a "magic bullet". I'm more interested in learning how to consistantly shoot tight groups.
  16. When my wife and I were on our first or second date she mentioned to me that she used to smoke. I responded, "it's a good thing you quit, because I really like you and I won't date a smoker." She assured me that had been at least a year since she smoked. Only after we were married, I found out it she had really quit about a week before we started dating. She said that dating me and getting back into a lot of active, outdoor activity had really helped her quit. It's been six years, and although she says that she had urges for at least the first year, when she smells a cigarette now it grosses her out and she can't believe she ever smoked. I don't think we would use the same tactics, but Jack and I have a proven track record for helping folks quit smoking. We'll be sure to help you by letting you give us some guns if you relapse.
  17. I've not priced these cars but a neighbor of mine has a 6 with a manual and loves it. I have owned 4 Mazdas and have always found them to be under-rated compared with the other Japanese brands. They usually handle better, have equal quality, and are a good value. We have a Cadillac CTS and a Subaru Outback (LL Bean w/ the 6) now and I was just telling my wife the other day how much more they cost to maintain than the Mazdas we had.
  18. +1, That's why I like this forum.
  19. 1982 Mazda RX-7. Only 100 HP, but the rotary engine seemed to have no redline and the car weighed almost nothing. By the time I was in college, the plastic on the door panels was melted and I took the doors apart to replace it with better fabric. I was absolutely amazed at how their was virtually no protection at all. That car was a backroads burner but I'm so blessed that I never wrecked it. Sold it during my first year of law school to get something with a reliable air-conditioner. By that time it had an engine from a 2nd Gen RX-7, new paint and new interior. A friend of my dad's bought it and gave it to his 18 year old son. It was totaled less than a week later. Someday I'll get another small, rear-drive, two-seater.
  20. I have to fight DCS all the time (as an attorney) and I can tell you they do employ some folks that would freak out over this photo. On a side note, One of my own neighbors tipped me off that one of my other neighbors owns a (gasp!) AK-47. She knows I own a few guns but still expected me to be alarmed. I was very laid back when I informed her that it is actually a common gun and is probably a perfectly legal semi-automatic version that is really no more dangerous than your average hunting rifle. I also mentioned that as long as the neighbors are responsible, I'm more concerned with them keeping their dog off my lawn than what kind of gun they own. Back on the subject; even if there is nothing wrong with the photo, I certainly wouldn't post it online.
  21. We're off topic but I'm not sure the law has been changed. I think it is just the "policy" to fine rather than to criminally prosecute. Personally, I live in West Knox County and their are many nearby county parks that my family can enjoy without worrying about any conflict of laws issues.
  22. This all sounds reasonable. I apologize if any of my responses sounded terse. I was a little annoyed at another person's response... Another thing about the internet is it's easy for otherwise reasonable people to end up arguing because written responses don't provide the opportunity for quick and easy clarification of what a person is trying to communicate.
  23. Ah, prosecutorial descretion. It can be terrible or wonderful and it is a great reason to be friendly with your local LEO. When in doubt, don't say much, but what you do say should be polite and respectful.
  24. My statement was not wrong. I'll admit it could have been more complete, but I answered the question of what penalty someone will most likely face for carrying with an HCP in a Knoxville city park. You answered the question of what is the worst possible penalty you could face. You are right that someone could therectically face other charges, but civil penalites are the policy of the current administration. You are right that a person could faced with harsher consequences but There have already I've learned a lot from you guys about firearms but when it comes to legal issues you've got to realize that there is a lot more to it than just reading a statute. I'm not going to get into a statute reading contest here on the forum. That is what I do for a living and I get on this forum as a pleasant distraction. I don't recommend that anyone intentionally carry in an unauthorized location. You should realized that you've instantly changed from a law abiding gun owner to someone who is breaking the law and likely to lose the "benefit of the doubt" from law enforcement.
