Looks like the TN ammo tax has been repealed
Chris replied to Jason in TN's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Is this tax the same as the Pittman-Robertson act? That was federal so I assume that's still in place. If so, I'm unclear on how this impacts TWRA. Was this tax on top of the federal tax? I'm a huge fan of TWRA... good folks doing good work. -
Congrats!

It was in Elmer Keith's collection for a while and sold at auction in 2015 for over a quarter million. https://frontierpartisans.com/3666/jim-corbetts-rifle/

Last one for the day. Possibly the greatest elephant hunter of all time: W.D.M. "Karamojo" Bell. This guy took over a thousand elephants using a 7x57mm (.275 Rigby) throwing 173 grain military ammo (fmj solids). For him it was all about shot placement... he was the master of the brain shot from any angle, especially tucking one in behind the ear. I've taken this shot and it is insanely difficult... this guy did it successfully over a thousand times.

My other favorite big game hunter: Jim Corbett. Most famous for hunting man-eaters in India. This is his .450-.400 box lock double rifle that he preferred for tiger hunting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Corbett

I think his stern glare was sufficient to drop most game.

That particular species is a pale and sad imitation on the best of days. I think they dress like that as protective coloration. Selous was a true man... the inspiration for Alan Quartermain. Well worth a quick read if you are interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Selous

I'd do it in a heartbeat. These guys actually did it: https://huntforever.org/2013/03/18/the-mighty-4-bore/
-
This gun was absolutely devastating... to the shooter. If he shot from the saddle it unhorsed him every time. In his own words: “…the 4-bore guns kicked most frightfully and, in my case, the punishment received has effected my nerves to such an extent as to have materially influenced my shooting ever since, and I am heartily sorry I ever had anything to do with them.”
-
Agreed. Really want to slap a drum mag on that bad boy!
-
Good point. I just assumed w/ a 200 yard shot in the backyard he'd be outside of town.

Unfortunately, hunting after dark is illegal in Tennessee. You are allowed to shoot them up to 30 minutes after sunset if I recall the regulations. Check here to make sure you keep it between the lines: https://www.tn.gov/twra/hunting.html Generally coyote hunting is done right at sunset using calls that emulate wounded prey (my wife HATES the rabbit squeal). Electronic calls and decoys can also help. They are pretty tricky critters so it's not going to be easy. There's a TON of videos on youtube... this one isn't bad as a high level introduction:https://youtu.be/HsvTkZb94Vo Now, all that being said: one of the most successful coyote hunters I know is my cousin. All he does is keep a scoped .22 by a window w/ a view on the chicken coop. He inevitably catches them sniffing around the fence and stacks them up with monotonous regularity. A good scope or binoculars should let you confirm that you are shooting a coyote during legal hours. The other alternative is trapping... personally I have had zero success with traps, but your mileage may vary. Good luck!

Got one this afternoon. Took about an hour and a half to talk him off the ridge. 22 lbs. 10 in beard. 1 1/4" spurs. Lots of action this weekend. Saw a total of seven toms, most of them tight on the hens and unwilling to budge. They seemed largely unaffected by the wind, rain, sun or anything that wasn't a hen or a human. Finally suckered one in close this afternoon.
-
Lots of activity this last weekend. Plenty of gobbling and strutting in the fields... they are in full swing in my neck of the woods. Here's hoping they are still there Saturday morning.
-
Ohhhh, yeah. They are super busy courting the hens on my property. Really hope they are still there next weekend.
-
The first. We picked up several new federal contracts this year. And fortunately for anyone who gets a job, they won't be working for me... at least not directly. I have much more competent leadership in place now.

My mother is of a similar age and due to arthritis can't really manipulate a pistol or revolver well. OTOH she can handle a Stoeger coach gun w/ no problem. The larger shotgun shells and easy break open action don't require much in the way of fine motor control. She sleeps w/ it next to the bed. It's only two shots but I pity the poor fool who tries to mess w/ her.

How many of you have ACTUALLY been hog hunting?
Chris replied to Handsome Rob's topic in Hunting and Fishing
I was hunting hogs just last night. Texas has very sensible rules so it’s night hunting with thermal scopes. Huge fun! Very windy so we didn’t see anything but maybe next time. As to them being dangerous, I rarely have problems with them but I did get charged on my very first pig hunt. Dropped him at five feet w a 45-70 (hat tip to kahrman). They can be cantankerous when they get irritated. These days I’m running a suppressed ar-10 w pulsar thermal scope. .308 lays them down nicely. -
Glock 17, 19 and 26. All my reload mags are for the 17 since it they'll run in any of the guns. Looks a little weird on the 26, but I didn't buy a Glock for the looks.

I don't collect any one thing or type of thing, but I collect trophies / souvenirs from my travels... my office is packed with stuff and everything has a story. Books, knives, antiquities, family heirlooms, game trophies... barely room for me in here.

Alabama Hog Control runs nighttime eradication hunts and it's closer than Texas. Barry provides rifles w/ thermal scopes and works w/ local farmers... they took down over a thousand pigs last year. Good operation, really good guy. My brother and I hunted with him for a weekend. Got two the first night and seventeen the second. We got into a big sounder and just tore it up. Most of the meat went to local families but we butchered a couple and had some good eating for a few months. http://alabamahogcontrol.com For anyone interested, My Sci chapter has it's banquet Saturday and he's donated a hunt for auction. Tickets available at musiccitysci.org or you can just bid online. https://www.onlinehuntingauctions.com/One-Night-Alabama-Hog-Hunt-for-Three-Hunters_i32438241

Yeah, you are paying for the convenience. Hunt the WMAs and you may or may not see anything. Go to Loshbough and it's highly likely you'll get a shot. Time or money is pretty much what it comes down to.

+1 Loshbough. Good property, good people and good hogs. I'm heading to Texas at the end of Feb to see if I can't put some pork in the freezer. Night time hunt w/ thermal optics... should be fun.
