  1. I was gonna say LWRC. The REPR is absolutely the way to go, but if you want 5.56, look at the LWRC SPR. Great rifles.
  2. He'll be missed. The Captain was my favorite show when I was a kid. I loved seeing who would show up to say good morning to the Captain. At the time, I wanted to be a Marine Biologist (Dad was a professional diver) and one morning Jaques Cousteau showed up to say good morning. I. Lost. My. Freaking. Mind. My mom still tells the story of how I ran over to the neighbors house to wake them up and tell them the oh so important news.
  3. He mentions Dave Grossman's "On Killing" in the article. I highly recommend that book along with "On Combat" to anyone who takes self defense seriously. It's a scientific study of what happens to the human body and mind under the stress of combat. A fascinating read and the knowledge is invaluable. In fact, I'm going to dig up my copy and start re-reading it.
  4. Where would one go to learn this invaluable skill? I'd love to be able to do that safely.
  5. I was trapping coon last season and had a big boar in a body trap. No signs of life when I approached. I'd forgotten my .22 so I popped him in the head w/ a rock just to be sure. Nothing, no breathing, nada. Still, just to be sure, I put him underwater for a couple of minutes while I checked the rest of the traps. I carried him back to the cabin and got the body out of the trap. The second the trap was loose, he came back to life and started trying to crawl away. I jumped back and durn near ruined my drawers. He'd been trapped, stoned and drowned and was still going. At that point I figured  "zombie coon" and dealt with it in the traditional manner.
  6.   Exactly. They aren't making any more of these.
  7. My doctor has warned me strenuously against overdoing it w/ a qtip. I've actually bruised my eardrums in the past... a lot easier than you think. It would be a short step to a punctured eardrum, especially if you are using something like a paperclip.
  8. Terrorists offend me. As does TSA. They can suck it up along with the rest of us.
  9. When the shtf I will have no shortage of friends. I fully expect everyone who knows that I prep to show up on my front door step.
  10. Big fun! Good to meet you guys.
  11. Keep your powder dry boys.
  12. Love this rifle. Poly mags are a definite plus. The bolt is a little stiff, but I wouldn't call it sticky. My brother used one in Africa on our plains game safari. He killed so many springbok hunting meat for the camp that he named the rifle summer. Get it? Summer, the end of spring. Ok, it's funnier over a few gin and tonics.
  13. I used to worry that nothing would happen. Then I saw New Orleans a few days after Katrina.  After that, I never looked back about prepping. Seeing a major American city wiped out and depopulated that quickly... well, I now know deep in my bones that "it" can happen anytime anywhere.   Besides, it keeps me out of the pool hall.
  14. 50 round boxes... seem to recall they were selling for four and change. More than it's listed on their website, but it's not all that bad a price. I'm well stocked so I left it there for others.
  15. I was just there and they had about 50 boxes of American Eagle 22lr on the shelf.

    *facepalm*
  17. That's three of us. Good enough. See you guys there.
  18. Nothing wrong with the .223. If it puts the deer on the ground then that's the end of the argument as far as I'm concerned. I might well try out some of the DRT ammo, but like Kahrman, I'm a fan of larger calibers.   .308 Remington Core-lokt in 180gr has great penetration and allows for less than ideal follow up shots.   For example, I made a less than ideal first shot on a black bear (it's rare but it happens) and had to make a follow up shot as he fled into the woods. I was able to pop him on the run and pierced him stern to stem. Entry wound was on the right hip. It broke the hip and penetrated the entire body. The round was discovered (at the airport xray) in his brain, perfectly mushroomed and apparently fully intact. Little ole .223 can't do that.
  19. With the Dickson match, would it make sense to push this a week so we can get better attendance? I'm good either way.
  20. Sounds good to me and my REPR. We'll be there.

    Snake guns

Good suggestions guys. I've already started pushing the brush back in that area, I'll get even more aggressive with it now. I always stand guard, but last time I checked, my draw speed was slightly below that of a snake striking... need to work on that. ;)

The farm is at an undisclosed location well outside of Davidson county.   And for any game wardens on this board, I cleanly missed the snake and would never ever ever ever ever ever (now that I know the facts) shoot something that could poison (excuse me... envenom) my grandchild and has taken up residence in an area where she likes to play.

I was as close as I cared to get to that big mother... guess I just need a bigger gun.

    Snake guns

The snakes have been pretty active out at the farm this year. I leave them alone except for the poisonous ones that hang out where the kids play... those guys have to go. That being said, the other day I had it out with a big water moccasin using a Judge loaded w/ .410 birdshot. I hit several times around his head (i could see the water splashing around him) but with no visible result. He crawled off, apparently unaffected. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I thought the Judge would be a perfect snake gun, but this encounter leads be to believe it would better serve as a paperweight. Was this a freak occurrence or does the .410 simply not throw enough shot for the job?
