A little over the top in some respects, but it's kind of a cool concept. The saw blade is thinking outside the box. Arming Yourself for the Zombie Apocalypse: How to Build the Ultimate Survival Shotgun | The Art of Manliness

I think that is the guy that was in Man, Woman, Wild last year. It was one of those survival shows like Survivorman. It was one I could get my wife to watch with me. I guess he's moved on to this show now.

I'm still looking to fill this position if anyone is interested.

My standard "cheap" targets are paper plates with a sticker in the middle. What I bring for fun are milk jugs filled with water and frozen. You get a really cool splatter out of them. Also, with just water, the jugs leak out almost immediately, but the ice keeps for a good while.

I'm looking to fill a Server Administrator position at work. I need someone with LOTS of experience with current versions of Citrix Applications (Xen App, Xen Desktop, Xen Server, etc.). The position also requires experience in general Windows Server 2008 administration. The job is in the Knoxville area. If interested, send me a PM and I can give you an email address to send a resume.

CC hacked, anyone else local to Knoxville?
analog_kidd replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in General Chat
I've been thinking about opening up another account at my bank, and using that only for Internet purchases. I'll keep $100 in it and transfer money as needed to make a purchase. Also, on my credit card and debit card, I wrote with a bold Sharpie pen "Check ID" on the front and back of the card. If anyone steals it, hopefully a chashier would see that. If nothing else it would discourage a bad guy from trying to use it. Of course that won't help if the BG tries to use it online. -
Buy a fixer-upper and save some money. If you can look past the ugly shag carpet and save $10k. you can afford brand new carpet for the whole house. That ugly wallpaper comes off in an afternoon of work, and the new paint looks great. Try to look past the cosmetic stuff. Some things are surprisingly easy to fix or replace yourself. Don't buy the best house on the block, you'll never get your money back. Buy the cheapest house on the block and fix it up, you'll get a bunch of equity right away. Go after a good hard rain and look for water in the basement. Loof for water spots on the ceiling, an indication of a roof leak. Look at the labels on the HVAC. Usually the serial number starts with the year it was made. If it's 10 years old, it may need replacing soon. Pay attention to the windows. If they are old they may need to be replaced. At the very least your energy costs may go up. Look at the appliances too. Make sure they are up to date. These are easy to replace, so use them as a bargaining tool to get a better price. Don't forget to consider insurance and taxes when calculating your monthly payment. Prepare to choke on all the fees you'll get charged at closing. Try really hard to get a 15 year mortgage. If you absolutely cant afford that ask about a 20 year. You'll save thousands in intrest, and get a better rate. Also TAKE THE TITLE INSURANCE. It's cheap and if you have a problem it's covered. I bought a forclosure and the title insurance was a few hundred bucks. I got a letter from the previous owners bank saying the owner had not paid on a home equity loan that the house was collateral on, and they were putting a lien on the house. I called the title company and they took care of everything. If the house is in a cookie cutter subdivision with a rectangular lot, a survey is not really needed, unless you just have to know who's side of the property line the fence is on. If you buy one in the country with a big odd shaped, get the survey. Good luck

Looks like the SOA cast has been busy this off season. I see now that Charlie Hunnam (aka Jax) is starring in a new movie, "The Ledge", with Liv Tyler. Heres the trailer: IMDb Video: The Ledge

Saw on TV this weekend an ad for a new TV show coming up, staring the actress that played agent Stahl. She plays a tough lady cop. Don't remember the station it's coming on, maybe TNT. The show didn't seem all that interesting to me, but we'll see.

National Geographic has a series of trail maps. One that they offer is for the Big South Fork. The map has every single trail and road in the park. It's also very rugged and coated to be waterproof. If you're looking for an over night trail, you'll find one on this map. Can't remember the name, but it's named after a man, goes most of the way through the park and would make a great several day trail. I've not done it personally though. Here's a link to the map I mentioned: Amazon.com: Big South Fork National Recreation Area, KY/TN - Trails Illustrated Map # 241 (National Geographic Maps: Trails Illustrated) (9781566953542): National Geographic Maps: Books

+1 for Frozenhead. It is my favorite campground in the area. Very pretty there, nice and close, rarely crowded, good hiking, & HOT showers. The campsites along the loop are super nice, but if you have a large group and wnat to stay together, there are a couple group sites along the creek that are great too. If you want a close campground in the smokies, Elkmont is OK. They have a river running through it if you want to cool down. Lots of good hikes. As others have said, Big South Fork is nice too, but a little further away.

The Wartburg municipal sewage treatment plant dumps their treated sewage directly into Crooked Fork. I have kayaked that creek several times and always make sure to keep my mouth closed tight while on the creek, and use alchohol drops in the ears afterward. Great creek though. Do you still paddle?

Both of my 20-something sons did a few rounds of the P90X. Neither of them could move for a week afterward.

Who elses property taxes/appraisal went up?
analog_kidd replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in General Chat
I've got a rental house that, due to taxes and insurance, the mortgage payment went up $20 a month. My personal residence went up about $15. Both are in Oak Ridge. I have another rental house I bought for $45k, and I have an official bank appraisal for that ammount (even though it really is worth a lot more). The county/city appraised it for $75k. When I went to the county to bring to their attention the fact that the house is not what it once was and should be appraised for less (and lower my tax burden), they said "we'll take it under consideration", then they promptly forgot about me. Guarantee if I said "I just added a swimming pool, maybe you should increase my appraisal" the paperwork would be done by close of business. -
God bless you, Rick Monday. You are a great American!

Heard this show was coming back on Discovery Chanel, so I put it in the DVR. It's entertaining if nothing else. This season starts out with the Military guy "simulating" a backcountry wound and cauterizing it by lighting black powder in the gash. He tough, I'll give him that, maybe not too smart, but tough.

Did anybody catch Obama's speech Monday, justifying why we are in Libya? He kept saying that "it's in our best intrests to fight this fight" but never said exactly why. I also heard him say that this evil Qaddafi was attacking his citizens and the people had no way to defend themselves. Kind of thought that was ironic, since he wants to disarm us. But of course America would never be ruled by a dictator or someone who doesn't care about Americans. Right?

I think here in Oak Ridge, it airs on The Sportsman's Channel. Unfortunately that channel is part of a package you have to pay extra for. What irritates me is the package is all sports channels, like basketball, football, etc., and then this one other channel (Sportsman's) that shows hunting and firearms related content. It's totally unlike the rest of the other channels. It's almost like someone sat down trying to figure out what channels to package up, they saw "Sportsman's Channel" and thought it must be a channel about sports. I don't think they even looked at it. I've been trying to find these shows online. Anybody know of a link?

We do the same bicuit on a stick trick, but we use squeeze butter and honey to fill the hole.

BakePacker We've used a bakepacker since I was a kid. Put one of these in a pot, fill with a little water, then mix up in a oven bag some kind of cake mix, or cornbread. Badically anything that you bake can be made in one. cover the thing, add some heat. the steam acts like an oven and bakes the food. Since you cook it in the bag, there is no cleanup We usually make some kind of cobbler by adding pie filling.

The most important thing to learn from the Japan disaster
analog_kidd replied to Glenn's topic in Survival and Preparedness
You know, I've been trying to ask myself "What would I do if I was over there" ever since this thing hit them. I've started storing some food, and I've got about three ways to purify water, not including boiling. But what keeps nagging me about this situation is that all of their stuff is gone! Everything. Their house, possessions, the saved food, supplies, etc. Guess about the only thing to do would be to make sure you have a good bug out bag, and grab it on the way out. Having said that, the BOB would not be first on my mind. Getting my family to safety would be. So who knows if I'd even think to grab it. -
Cedar Bluff Dick's Getting Out of Hunting/Fishing

The Knoxville Dicks is located on N. Peter's Dr. In my family we don't call it "Dicks" we call it "Dicks on Peters". Makes me giggle every time
