1. The Grand is a mighty good rifle. I have a SA restored with a Kreiger match barrel and a nice Winchester CMP w/ stock SA barrel.   Even the stock SA barrel shoots well enough with surplus HXP ammo I can put all 8 on a silhoutte at 400 yards.
2. Awesome......................that he got him.   Ditto on the major media.
3. Thanks for posting this. My son is very excited to do this. He thought he was ready last year but he decided he wanted to wait another year.   We will be zeroed for 400 yards with Black Hills 175 SMK. Pretty sure I know how much MOA we need but would appreciate any help we can get when we get there. My scope does have enough elevation. I would like to come the earlier event but will be out of town. Planning on the Sun the 17th.   Thanks in advance.
4. Ditto on getting one bigger than you originally plan. You will eventually fill it up and wonder where all that space went.
5. Little up date from my sons school today. He came home from school and said they discussed it at length and did mock drills to prepare.   He said they went into the locker room and they said, "if you hear shooting, you could hide in a locker to protect yourself from gunfire".   And my son said, "uhm, no it won't".   He's shot enough .223 to know better. Might be a good place to hide, however.   As a result, now you have to be buzzed in to get into the school which I think is a good thing.
6. It's the slippery slope of, "Jimmy's Dad has guns at home" kind of potential comments I was thinking about.
7. Here is a press release from my sons school that just came out tonight. I was OK with all of it until the end, 2nd to last topic.   That's a pretty nebulous claim. In the context of the school maybe but that's a pretty broad statement.   Interested in comments on this.   http://www.boarddocs.com/tn/scstn/Board.nsf/files/932QSY6AC4A7/$file/SCS%20statement%20regarding%20Newton%20tragedy%20.pdf
8. It's decay of society and little regard for the value of life anymore. My kids understand full and well the difference between a video game and real life. That is, because we have a "family" and have parents that have taught them well.   The growing population, not so much............
9.   I agree. But that's how I think it will play out and probably by just another of his EO's.....................   You can do that when you are a dictator.   :(
10. There is no way to implement gun confiscation on a grand scale. However, (hope I'm wrong) but I could see, turn them in or ownership will be a felony, punishable by a $10,000 fine and/or time.   Many sheeple would turn them in.
11.   Here is how quiet it is. My son shooting in the backyard.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdhx7wnePXc
12. Nice! That gun will shoot at least 330 yards with some decent accuracy (from doing it) and 500-600 yards from vids I have seen.   Curious what ammo is most accurate for it? So far mine has been Wolf Match Extra and Eley for subsonic. CCI Mini Mag and Blazer for high velocity.
13. With CCI subsonic (Eley, Wolf etc) it will be very quiet. For just some yard plinking, CCI Quiet and the can is just that, quiet!   All you hear is the firing pin and the bullet hit the target!  :)
14. Just got stopped 2 weeks ago. My .45 was on the seat next to me in a gym bag. I handed my DL and permit. He asked if I had any weapon in the car and I said yes next to me in the bag. He thanked me for telling him and I aksed I place hands on the wheel when I saw him coming back to the car. I did and we talked a bit about the amount of miles per year I drive. He never asked to see it or any other questions about it. He thanked me again for cooperating and said it was a pleasure meeting. He was a very nice guy, however, I still got a ticket.
15. Nice pics!
16. Nice job. I used JB weld in place you should'nt even think of using it once on an old Mopar 318. Still ran great for years after that.
17. As others have posted CMP, Gun Broker etc. James River Armory does top notch restorations if you are in the market for a restored gun.
18. Boyds walnut.
19. Nice job. A Timney will make it feel like a new rifle. I did a very similar thing a few years ago. If you go with a Timney, here is what I had to go through to make it fit. Might not be as bad w/ a plastic stock. https://home.comcast.net/~ericdouthitt/mosin_project.htm
20. As far as drop, it just happens that zero for CCI Quiet at 50 is the same as Blazer at 100 yards. Most of my .22 shooting at the range is 100 yards. So when at home, I don't have to touch the scope. It's zeroed just about the same. Correct, these will not cycle a semi auto gun. Also, I'm using an extremely accurate gun (sub MOA at 100 yards as posted above). So these results may be entirely different using another type of gun. *I forgot to point out earlier. Don't let the "quiet" part and 710 FPS fool you. It's still a 40g bullet traveling at more than 700 FPS. It will go right through 1" treated wood at 50 yards. I would expect these to be lethal out to at least 100 yards, maybe more. JBM program said 19.8 ft/lbs at 400 yards. In other words, more energy at 400 yards than a pellet gun at point blank.
21. I saw a topic on another forum, where CCI Quiet was not that accurate. My son and I thought we would do some video and post the results. We shot CCI Quiet at 50 yards using a Savage TRR-SR. Shot off a bipod, scope at 6X and through a can. I've tried w/o can at the range and it's the same without at this distance. We both shot a couple 5 round groups. Mine last one was best (he often beats me) so below are the results. Group was 1.105". Had I not had the flyer, .810". I will add, we both have done much better, but this is "typical" and does illustrate, this is "decent" ammo for the intendid application. That is, backyard shooting and not ****ing off neighbors! Earlier video of target distance. Shooting at the boxes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdhx7wnePXc Results today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxwFQKzZPgI Note: For comparison sake with Wolf and Eley match, this rifle has done well under MOA with a best so far of .850" at 100 yards. Also, I have shot enough of this ammo to notice, there is some deviation on the powder here and there. Every so often, you will get a loud crack. This ammo does exactly what I want through a can. It's quieter than an air rifle, but more accurate (at longer distance) and more resistant to wind. Only drawback is, you wind up with a lot of brass on the patio! 22. Savage now makes a semi-auto version of the TRR-SR. The 64 TRR-SR. I have the bolt TRR-SR and it's scary acuurate. If the semi-auto is close to the bolt gun, you would have a VERY accurate semi-auto .22. http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/64TRRSR
23.
I haven't shot the 400 yet. Stones river is all concrete and gravel. No mud. Probably not a big deal with the 400, since I won't be walking to a 400 yard target.
You don't walk, they provide a golf cart.
24.
I love Southside, but... Fixed target stands. You have to change lanes if you wanna shoot at a different range. If it rains, you're screwed. Stones River has concrete walkways, and the rest is gravel. MUCH better shooting benches at Stones River. Sound absorbing material at Stones River. Doesn't ring your ears as much. With all that said, I would rather shoot at Southside if it wasn't a gazillion miles away. I like being able to pull my truck up to the firing line. I can make it to Gallatin Gun Club in less time.
I guess I'm speaking specifically about the 400 yard range. You are correct, the 100 yard sucks. However, the 400 yard benches are great and so is the concrete if you want to shoot prone. Not sure what you mean about rain at MGSC?
