As I am a house husband these days I am sure no one wants to see that. LOL So heres a few from my past, Taken in 1989, reenlisted onboard the USS Ranger while attached to HS-8 (me on the right) A few years and commands later, I was stationed at SERE (West) and here "Ski" and I were demonstrating a game demo to some scouting paretns at Camp Monrovia (me on the left) I have a few more i have to edit and upload and will get to them when time permits. I am also looking trying to find to pictures from the helo maintanance days.

You people just aint right! LOL I like Lays potato chips in vanilla ice cream.

Watercress is usually found in cool spring feed waters in TN. One thing I would like to bring up, half the battle is not finding edible plants but weeding out the poisonous plants. And while something maybe edible it may not be palatable and may actually upset ones digestive system due to not being accustomed to eating natural foods.

Dolomite you have incoming PM

Yes I did wait until after midnight to reply, me being the troubled 1st Class and all. LOL Happy Birthday Navy and please continue to make those deposits in the 1st.

That would all depend on where Down Under you were. In Tasmania most folks would drink Cascade (way worse than horse piss) or James Boags & Sons. I have a few 6 packs of Boags in the fridge sitting next to some Tooheys New, which I havent tried yet. When I was Perth/Freemantle I had more than my fair share of VB as well as Tooheys Stout. In Darwin there is a huge micro brew following and Emu Bitter is some of the worst. LOL In Brisbane they favored XXXX more than anything and I rather liked that also. Luckily 4X is just about everywhere and Fosters is nowhere down under. LOL

Like others have said, S-size up the situation, is condition, surroundings, equipment U- use all your senses, undue haste makes waste R- remember where you are V- vanquish fear and panic I- improvise V- value life/living A- act like that natives, people and animals, they all need food, water and shelter just like you L- learn basic skills/live by your wits

Welcome to TN and a bit more freedom than you are use to, LOL. But what ever you do, DO NOT bring that cold white stuff that falls from the sky 7 months a year up in MI with you! LOL

T58 are a pain in the butt! We had them in the SH-3H helos I worked on. I moved onto the Navy's H-60 program and the T700's were much better. If I can find a picture of "then" I will post, but for the past 7 years I have been a house husband/stay at home Dad and I doubt anyone wants to see that. LOL

That would be very cool and I will drop you a line. As I mentioned earlier I doubt I will be able to do anything this Fall, but in the Spring we should be able to have a bit of fun.

On our property. We have right at 4 acres and my inlaws have a few acres to our East so for now we have more than enough area to crawl around in. LOL Probably next Spring we will start walking some trails in your (sigmtnman) neck of the woods.

That is a very real concern with me as well. The younger kids packs are very light weight, as in not reinforced and not padded with 2 inch webbing as straps since they are not load bearing packs. The small pouch contains 4 lenghts of 550 cord, a small signal mirror and the whistle. In the main pocket he carries a 2 quart water bladder only filled to about a 1/3. As he gets older and more resposible he will also start carrying a mag block as well and wire for setting traps and snares. Right now he has only helped set a two pin twich up and I dont wont him setting anything until he can set it, check it and remove it. LOL

When I first started this I didnt concern myself with the seams, ie if the bobbin tensioned messed up I didnt cut it and re-sew it. So as you can see on the left pack there are some issues. LOL Since the list of packs has grown I started taking my time to make sure the thread and seams are not all jacked up.

Heres a little something I have been working on. LOL The background is back in the late 90's I taught SERE (West) with the Navy. At the time we were issued medium ALICE packs. Lets just say they were a little too much for our needs. We really only needed a day pack set up. Well I made my own. Fast forward to this summer i have been taking my 6 y/o son in the woods and teaching him things, ie IDing plants, making and setting traps and snare, firecraft, and basic orientation. So after one walk in the woods he asked me to make him a pack like mine, so I did. He then started asking me to make his friends packs also. I finished pack #7 last week and its for a 9 y/o so its larger. My sons is on the left with the very dulled up aircrew survival knife LOL I have also been making the 223 survival whistles that was addressed in a thread that I cant seem to find right now, but heres a link http://www.instructables.com/id/223-Survival-Whistle/

I do not, nor will I own one. A year or so ago my 2nd cousin brought his over to replace the scope. After I got it in my hands I gently scolded the young lad for not cleaning and taking better care of it. Anyway, I started cleaning it and the brush got rather loose about and inch and a half down from the crown. The barrel had a nice bulge in it! And add to the fact that the plastic stock has the sling mounts molded into and there fore are not replacable when the break and the do and will break in a very short period of time if you actually put a sling on it. To me its not worth the time, money and effort to buy one and have to always have it repaired/replaced when for a little more cash you could get a much better/sturdier design. Just my 0.02.
