Thinking Of Switching To A Revolver For EDC
Will Carry replied to krunchnik's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I would not even think to argue with Tom Givens about handguns or self defense. I envy you for being able to get training from Tom. The snubby is considered a good back up gun but many LEO carry them off duty too. I'm not sure why Tom would call a revolver ammuntition sensitive and unreliable but I'll agree with the rest. A concealed handgun is a compromise at best. I carry a snubby and don't feel underarmed. POSA Video Network at Officer.com -- Defensive Snub Revolver -
This is a good topic for me. I like the 45 acp and there have been a lot of good comments. Do any of you guys know anyone who has ever fired an AMC Backup 45acp?

Thinking Of Switching To A Revolver For EDC

Razorback, I was gonna say that most of the time I don't carry a speed loader or any extra ammo. I ain't very fast reloading and in a gun fight I'd be shaking to much to even try. I'll fire five and run like hell or pistol whip him. One of the things that convinced me to carry a snubby was the Crimson Trace laser grips. It makes a world of difference at the range and I feel that it gives me a little edge. My Smith and Wesson Chief's Special has a three in barrel and point shoots well. I like the old school grips too. -
An old prospector shuffled into town leading an old tired mule. The old man headed straight for the only saloon to clear his parched throat. He walked up and tied his old mule to the hitch rail. As he stood there, brushing some of the dust from his face and clothes, a young gunslinger stepped out of the saloon with a gun in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other. The young gunslinger looked at the old man and laughed, saying, "Hey old man, have you ever danced?" The old man looked up at the gunslinger and said, "No, I never did dance... never really wanted to." A crowd had gathered as the gunslinger grinned and said, "Well, you old fool, you're gonna dance now," and started shooting at the old man's feet. The old prospector --not wanting to get a toe blown off-- started hopping around like a flea on a hot skillet. Everybody was laughing, fit to be tied. When his last bullet had been fired, the young gunslinger, still laughing, holstered his gun and turned around to go back into the saloon. The old man turned to his pack mule, pulled out a double-barreled shotgun, and cocked both hammers. The loud clicks carried clearly through the desert air. The crowd stopped laughing immediately. The young gunslinger heard the sounds too, and he turned around very slowly. The silence was almost deafening. The crowd watched as the young gunman stared at the old timer and the large gaping holes of those twin barrels. The barrels of the shotgun never wavered in the old man's hands, as he quietly said, "Son, have you ever licked a mule's ass?" The gunslinger swallowed hard and s aid, "No sir..... but... I've always wanted to." There are a few lessons for us all here: Never be arrogant. Don't waste ammunition. Whiskey makes you think you're smarter than you are. Always, always make sure you know who has the power. Don't mess with old men, they didn't get old by being stupid.

Thinking Of Switching To A Revolver For EDC

I have two wheel guns that I carry. A Taurus M85UL with a CT grip and a Smith and Wesson model 36 with a 3 inch barrel. I don't feel under armed at all, OK maybe just a little, but it's unfounded fear. Both of these guns are fast on the draw and deadly accurate at 21 feet. There is nothing wrong with carrying a 5-shot revolver for self defence. The bad guys will not notice. Is that a pimped out Taurus M-85? Nice! -
I own a Glock 36. Put a Crimson Trace laser gaurd on it and bought a +1 extension for one of the magazine. The only thing painful about it is the orginal magazine is a pinky pincher. It doesn't hurt much but is the only painful thing about it. It has never failed to fire and is accurate. It is an amazing pistol and I carry it often. With the +1 mag. extension it looks a lot like the Glock 19 and it eliminates the pinky thing. I don't consider it to be that small or at least not small like the AMT backup.

That is a good question Steelharp. There is the AMC back-up in 45acp but it's kind of an old design and never seemed to be popular. I have never known anyone who owns one. The Colt Defender and Agent are small. The Sig 220 and the Kimber Ultra-Carry are small. But all of those pistols are expensive. You are correct in that no company north of the equator seems to make an affordable sub-compact 45acp. Whenever I go over to Fuquay Gun & Gold I drool all over the glass counter looking at the Colt Defender they have on sale. I just can't justify buying it right now. He's the same bastard that sold me the Diamondback 380.

I like a double action revolver, unless you are using it as a pocket pistol. The hammer can get caught on clothing. The double action gives you the option of shooting in single action and having a more accurate shot or using double action when you need to. The best price on a revolver will be Charter Arms, Rossi and Taurus ( I may have missed one or twe like EAA). The best buy for the money would be a Ruger SP-101 or Ruger GP-100. (Ruger makes tough, ruggedly dependable revolvers). If you just want the best, then Smith and Wesson makes the best. This is just my humble opinion. I would also recommend buying a 22 pistol that is fun to shoot and relatively accurate. Twenty twos cost about a nickle a shot. 45acps are like throwing a handfull of nickles at the target. It can get expensive. Good luck! Learn how to operate your weapon safely and know how many rounds you have shot in you revolver. That's just an inside joke.

Glad to have you Yank. I got lost in the back woods of Vermont one time, pulled off into this little country store to ask directions. The old dude said "Well I'll tell ya' Reb (he called me Reb), Ya go down he-a and tun ri- ite. It's a shot cot to the highway." I ordered a glass of ice tea up there. They gave me a cup of hot water with a tea bag and a glass of ice. I think they was messin' with me.

I haven't held the LCR yet. I carry an M85UL sometimes. I'm going to the Dixie Gun and Knife show August 6th (with a pocket full of cash) if I can stop myself from buying something stupid I'll check them out. I do like a wheel gun and 38 special ammo is easier to find.
-
I went to the store to buy an LCP, but for some reason when I have a pocket full of money it effects my brain. If I can figure out what to do with the Diamondback I will get an LCP. I own 4 Ruger hand guns, a GP-100, Mark III and two Single Sixs, and they all shoot well.

I went back to the range Monday and fired a box of American Eagle target rounds. I had two failures to eject. It pulled the spent casing out of the barrel almost all of the way, then let go. The round from the magazine was jammed against the spent shell casing. Maybe it's the ammo, I don't know. I am starting to carry my fanny pack holster with my Glock 36 inside now. I think I'm just gonna give up on the pocket pistol concept. I'm gonna mess around with this Diamondback and send it back for warrenty work and see what they can do to it. The warrenty is only good for the original owner.

How come everyone on you-tube shoots a revolver until it goes "CLICK"?
Will Carry replied to Will Carry's topic in Handguns
LOL! I can't believe it either and I started the thread. I'm glad there are other idiots, like you, who contibuted to it. WAIT! I see you contributed two replies! NO THREE! WTF? How come everyone on you-tube shoots a revolver until it goes "CLICK"?
Will Carry replied to Will Carry's topic in Handguns
"When SHTF you can concentrate on one thing and one thing only. You concentrate on counting shots, I'll concentrate on getting five into COM as fast as I can. If you can take time to count you weren't in enough danger to fire. The drill with a snubby revolver is to fire and fire fast, the click is your signal that you need to reload." While you are clicking on an empty cylinder, I will be reloading. I don't have to concentrate to count. I recon it comes natural with me. When I hear gunfire in the woods, I can count the shots after I hear the reports. I just can't help it. Maybe this feller can convince you. His Name is Jerry Miculek and he's a purdy good shot and he does not go click, he counts his shots. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srM2qghDFuI Campare Jerry Miculek to this yahoo. Or even this numb nuts. The difference is Jerry Miculek is a pistol shooter and the other two are just yahoos with numb nuts and a video camera. -
"Take a bar of soap." That is the only advice I give through hikers. The rest you already know.

Handgun carry class tomorrow, any tips?
Will Carry replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
My instructor said. "By law I have to show you these two videos. (he held them up) Here they are, you've seen them. If anyone asks if I showed them to you say YES." Then he put the videos back in the box. This guy was a retired cop. I knew him when he was a narc back in the 80s. He had long hair and a beard then. He was the best instructor I've ever heard of. Knowbody got sleepy. He did live demostrations of the 21 feet rule, told stories about real life shootings and instructed us on how to recognise gangs and how they work when they are trying to ambush you or jack yo ride. He also went over the legal stuff. The man should write a book. -
More blemished bullets on Midway!!!
Will Carry replied to gregintenn's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Other than the ammo order Midway has given good service. Of course, other than the fact that my X-girlfriend was cheating on me, she gave me good service too. To be honest I probably will buy from Midway in the future if they have something <besides ammo> that I want. -

Will Carry replied to gregintenn's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
OK. I have been buying from Midway but never ammo. So I decided to buy some ammo from them. They kept changing the date on when the ammo would arrive. It was going to take 3 or 4 months to get this ammo. Final they told me that my 45acp target loads would take 10 months to get. This is the same ammo that Walmart sells all day long. So I ordered several hundreds dollars worth of ammo, and all I got was the run around. I never got one round of ammo so I canceled the order from Midway and sent them an e-mail explaining to them that if they are going to advertise ammunition they should be able to deliver, otherwise they should not sell it. Having to wait 10 months for Winchester 45 acp 230gr MC target ammo and then you may or may not get it. That is not good customer service. I have never ordered anything from them since then becuase I have found other on-line stores that will deliver what they say they will. I ain't mad, I ain't a hater. I just don't like BS. -
I owned an orange 73 Gremlin X. 304cu in V-8. Hooker headers hush thrush mufflers. Motorcraft intake manifold with a 4 barrel carb and a 3.51 rear end. That car liked to got me kilt. Sheriff Pearson couldn't catch me...but he knew where I lived. I got home one night and he was parked in my driveway. He had a talk with my dad. The next day I had to trade the Gremlin in on a VW Beetle. Saved my life............

I'm not very happy with Midway. I'll not be buying from them again. -
Does anyone remember Sam Pekinpaw's "Cross of Iron"? It's one of those sleeper movies that don't get a lot of playing time. It's about a group of German soldiers trying to survive the Russian Front in WWII. It's not the greatest war movie ever made, but it's a purdy good flick if you can find a copy.

Article: Why is crime rising in so many American cities?
Will Carry replied to G27's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
The Atlantic is a long standing reputable magazine. Very good article. I have seen the same thing in Durham NC. The police and our institutions of law and order are the only thing protecting these gangs. If the system ever breaks down, the gangs will be the first thing to go. I sure wish I lived back in Tennessee up on the Plateau. There are some meth heads and dope growers up there, but nothin like here in Raleigh. -

Buy you a pack of chewing gum and then go for a walk. If you can do that, you can count to six and still concentrate on trigger pull and not anticipating the shot and not flinching. I ain't asking you to pat your head and rub your belly at the same time. I'm just saying that the mark of a good revolver shooter is to know how many rounds he has fired and how many rounds he has left. If you can't do that then stick to something easier like a Glock. Boy that sounded saracstic and angry. If I talked like that to my wife, I'd have hell to pay. I don't recon I meant to sound like an ass, but I do believe what I said. . -
WAIT! I got mine working! 100 rounds of American Eagle target loads with zero failures. 20 rounds of Cor-bon Power Balls with no failures. I did three things, 1) shot 200 "break in" rounds through it. I had many many FTFs. 2) I polished the feed ramp with a fine polishing rouge to a mirror finish. 3) I changed my grip so I could hold it a little firmer. I am very happy with it now. I have been in contact with their customer service, they were very helpful. I will carry this pistol now. It will out shoot a Kel-tec 3AT or a Ruger Kel-Tec LCP. Less felt recoil, better sights. I will never ever buy another 380 anything. I would rather carry an LCR .357.

Dirty Harry knew how many rounds he had left. He was just messing with the guy. Otherwise he would not have dry fired on the dude after backup arrived. Clint Eastwood was pretty good about six shooters shooting six times in a movie. I have counted as many a 13 shots from a six shooter in some movies. They also tend to rack pump shotguns a lot in movies almost like it's a pump BB gun and the more you pump it the harder it will shoot. The first thing I do when I chamber a round in my pump shotgun (rack) is load another round into the tube. Hollywood never does this. They also wait until they need to fire again before they rack the spent shell out and a new shell into the chamber. Any pump shotgunner will rack a new round into the chamber before the recoil settles. You never wait till you are pointing at a deer to rack a round. What was I talking about????? Oh yeah counting shots. After six shoots with a revolver, or 5 if it's a 5 shot, I'm done. Pulling the trigger again is a waste of time and could get you killed in a pistol fight.
