I recently traded for a 1989 Wrangler Islander. it's a little more of a fixer-upper than I expected, but it will be a good project for me and my boys. (I just signed up at Tennessee Jeeps - if its anything like TGO I'll learn all I need to know!)

President Obama’s Brilliant Strategy No One Seems To Recognize -
JPS replied to greenego's topic in General Chat
I'll be looking for this guy's response when Obama goes through with a response after not getting the House to approve it - wonder how that will be blamed on Republicans.. -
Yeah - mine too. When I took her to the range she started with a .22 and worked her way up to my 1911 - when she shot that she said "Yep - this one is mine!" After I pried my Springfield Loaded from her hand I had to buy her an ATI Titan.

I really enjoyed The Return Man by V. M. Zito - protaganist is kind of a 'bounty hunter' who tracks down zombies in the western half of the US for relatives and friends who have made it to the "Safe Zone" in the eastern US. Interesting characters, lots of pretty believable situations, and enough action to make it a great read.

We have one (?) that keeps eating the tomatoes in my garden.. Last time this happened we had a good line-of-sight and my kid sat watch in the dining room window with a BB gun. Now the garden has been moved around the corner of the house, so that's not an option. May have to get a trap myself.

Biometric Protector XT Long Gun Locking Station
JPS replied to a topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I used to see a guy at the gun shows with a biometric wall safe that fit in a wall between the studs. I liked the idea, but when I came up with the cash, I stopped seeing him at the shows.. If its reliable, seems like a great idea for good security with fast access. -
Absolutely. It sucks that they have to wait until they are legal age to address the stupidity of their parents, but thats the way it is. I'm sure that my kids would love to have a 'legal option' to over-rule some of my parenting decisions, but they're stuck with me making those decisions until they're 18.
-
This is exactly right. I may think that a name some parent gives their kid is the stupidest thing I've ever heard, but neither I or any one else has any right to take that decision away from the parents. I'm guessing this Judge's decision will be overturned at first opportunity.

Looking for sub-compact recommendations
JPS replied to martinjd's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
LOL - by my quick count, in just two pages 27 different guns were recommended. One size certainly does not fit all! Glad you found one you like - I want an XDS 45 too. -
I put together a CVA Kentucky Rifle kit I bought at a sporting goods store in Oregon, and used it for a couple of years hunting in the Oregon mountains. My hunting buddy used a beautiful ($$$!) Italian-made black powder rifle, but he couldn't out-shoot my rifle. I don't shoot it much anymore, but I keep the Kentucky rifle along with bullets, butter, and powder wrapped up tight and stashed away in case we run out of regular ammo during the zombie apocolypse.

I remember standing in line to try McDonald's just-released Big Mac sandwich. The local newspaper had someone there taking pictures for the next day's paper.

I waited at the Hart Ln office for well over two hours, and left with 37 people still in front of me in line.. I mailed it the next day, got the letter a week later, and my renewed permit after about another two weeks. I won't try to do it in person again. (At Hart Ln I even stood in line to hand back my number so that they wouldn't waste time waiting for me to come when they called it - the clerk threw it away without even looking at it. VERY frustrating experience.)

How do you hide gun/or accy purchases from the wife or GF?
JPS replied to Dustbuster's topic in General Chat
I would not suggest lying to your wife or girlfriend about a gun purchase, or anything else… However, I do believe in (and have tried to educate my sons about) the practice of ‘common-sense notification’. To avoid problems, when we get home from the gun show we do not walk into the house and immediately/loudly ask Pretty Wife if she wants to see the new ‘whatever’ that we spent $$$ for today, no matter how proud or excited we are about the purchase. Instead, we patiently wait for an appropriate moment when Pretty Wife is calm and cheerful, making sure that money/finances have not been mentioned in a negative context for at least a week or so. Then, as Pretty Wife’s feet are being massaged and she has a cool drink in her hand, we let her know that we have something new that we’re sure she will enjoy next time we go to the range, especially with her being such an accomplished marksperson and firearms aficionado. We also remind Pretty Wife that she is more important to us than anything else in the world, and defending her is worth any sacrifice or monetary expense. This works most of the time. When it doesn’t, we just have to man-up and take our lumps. -
I have a Glock 26 and a Nano. I carry the 26 in an OWB holster when I can cover it up, and pocket or IWB carry the Nano when I need something slimmer/smaller/smoother. I like the Nano a lot - nothing wrong with my trigger.

Use pink and say it's for Breast Cancer Awareness.. They won't dare complain. I'm disappointed but not surprised that our president didn't end this mess when he gave his speech about the trial - a few words added about everyone acknowledging the verdict and moving on would have made that a decent speech.

The prosecution has said that they will call Martin's mother to the stand as a witness, but his parents were given special permission by the judge to be in the courtroom prior to being called. Zimmerman's parents were not allowed to attend, because the prosecution put them on the 'potential' witness list, although they will most likely not be called. I'm sure the judge and lawyers have some legal mumbo jumbo to justify it, but it seems like a double standard to me.

Mine has been perfect - probably 300-400 assorted (mostly cheap ammo) rounds through it without any problems whatsoever.

Those look great!

Congratulations, and great choice for a name!

I have a Nano, and always carry with one in the chamber. Since the gun only holds 6 shots to begin with I sure don't want to give any up.

It would of course depend on the exact situation, but I'd guess that if possible, traveling along the RR would mean much faster travel for my family, which includes a very small child. If forced overland, at least knowing where the RR lines are might give us additional options at rivers, etc.

I just finished a (pretty good) zombie apocalypse book titled ‘Return Man’. The protagonist in the book travels cross country using railroad lines instead of roads and highways, thereby avoiding what he calls ‘ghost jams’ where traffic gridlock has blocked the roads. This seems like a good idea to me if the need for travel or evacuation should come up. I imagine it might be a little easier to travel inconspicuously, and since it would be difficult to use a vehicle, fewer under-prepared individuals or groups would use that route. (Note that I plan on walking.) I’m looking now for a railroad atlas, or something with some detail about routes, mileage, population centers, etc. I found a good software package for about $40, but we all know how useful that would be if TSHTF. Any thoughts?
