  1. would agree on the recoil. I shot some 50s and 35s and the 35s had much less recoil. You wouldn't think that small difference would make a difference, but indeed it is noticeable.
  2. This one belonged to my uncle. He gave it to me over 15 years ago and it's been sitting in the safe ever since. He used it way back when, it was made in 1947 or 48, for ground hogs and crows. I just recently got it out, and have been appreciating ever since. It's a pretty neat feeling to shoot something he used and was very proud of. It's a beautiful old gun. I think of him every time I handle it.
  3. punched a few more holes this afternoon with the load. I've got it set for 1" high at 100 yds. I think I could get it down to 1/2" groups with a good rest. The scope on it is an old Pecar Berlin 6x with dot retical, so it's not the easiest to group with. I'm using 25gr. of BLC-2. I'll be ready for him next time. I"ve got a .223 bolt I've had for a long time and never have worked up a good load for it. Maybe I'll do a little work on it now that I've got the bug.
  4. thought I'd update the thread and see if anyone has a favorite powder for .222? I've been using BLC-2 just because I had some, and a little IMR 4198 for the same reason. But I think I may have to test out something else. Maybe RL 7, Varget or a winchester powder. I bought some even lighter slugs, 30 gr. and want to get them a spin.
  5. I had planned on working up a 50 or 55 gr. bullet load for my .222 to use on yotes, but I've got a really accurate 35 gr. bullet load. You think that's too light a bullet for something as big as a yote?
  6. I think I've got it figured out. Did a little paper punching this afternoon and I'm guessing I was about 2.5 inches low so with a chest bead I probably put it between his legs. No wonder he high-tailed it out of there. I was using some old 50gr. ammo that had been loaded from way back and it really was not dialed in, although it does group well. I've been working on a 35gr. load for skunks and such and did a little more on it this afternoon and feel pretty comfortable with it now. Got the scope readjusted so should be on track now. I'd really like to shoot 50 grainers, but haven't been able to get the groups tightened up sufficiently. What do you think about shootin' yotes with a 35 gr. Vmax bullet? It's sort of lightweight, I'm sure it explodes small stuff pretty good, not sure about something as large as a coyote.
  7. both my dogs are female, but both are "fixed". Gonna do a little sighting in this afternoon and see what's going on. I fired it a couple of months ago and it looked real good. I looked around for some blood, didn't see any but wasn't sure I was in the right spot. I've shot crows twice this far, still can't believe it.
  8. about quarter til 6 this morning the dogs were barking like crazy, got up and looked out the window and could see something but not sure what it was, figured it was a fawn. It fell back, the dogs advanced. I knew then it was not a fawn. Got the binocs out and could then see it was a yote. It seemed really interested in my dogs. It ran around the edge probably into some tall grass where they weren't high enough to see over, they quit barking, then a couple min. later they started up again. He had moved off to the side but was about 75 yds from the house. I ran for my .222 and by then he had moved back over to where he was to start out with, still about 75 yds. off. I took a good steady bead on him from the porch, in my underwear, and touched off a round dead center of his chest, I thought. He was looking right at me. He bolted like he was shot from a cannon after I fired. Thought for sure I would have nailed him, I can't believe I didn't. He was running fast, wife said he disappeared down the hill running fast. He was a pretty good size yote. My dogs are pretty good size too, 65 lbs or so, and he appeared comparable. I looked down the hill to see if I could see him, didn't. I still can't believe it was a miss. Not sure if he was trying to lure my dogs out into the field, or what. He hung around a pretty good while when they were barking, moving closer and farther away. I didn't see any others.
  9. nothing wrong with just readin', Lebanon is a nice place, and so is TGO
  10. how about a Secret Sam outfit? Wish I had one today. <object style="height: 344px; width: 425px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fjTXCa8tLI"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fjTXCa8tLI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="425" height="344"></object>
  11. I don't think any US TN senator is up this time around. Now if you're talking state house senate, then yes. What district you in?
  12. If only we could get the liberals to see it that way. I"m more inclined to look at it as we're hanging from a thread. Elections do matter. And if we don't straighten things out when the ballot box is open, then we're gonna have to tug on that trip wire regardless of what the supremes say.
  13. Welcome, I have a bunch of kin down that way, mighty fine town.
  14. be aware of things around you, and keep a little extra surprise tucked away in your belt for those who dare to come to close. No point in showing your hand before necessary.
  15. Ok boys here's a throw down for you all. I'm not one to get involved in someone else's business, but for what Harry Reid has done to our country, and will continue to do, I feel it is my business to knock him out of his high position in the US Senate if at all possible. And while he has been a friend to the NRA and generally gun advocates, it's time he moved on. In the Tuesday primary Sharron Angle bested all the other republican candidates and will go head to head with Harry in Nov. I have listened to her and believe her to be a true conservative candidate that is concerned about our country's debt among other things, and is a super supporter of the 2nd amendment. She's going to be painted by Harry as a nut job and wacko, but only because she's not an inside the beltway thinker. I challenge each of you to read her stuff, listen to what she as to say and then get your wallets out. Because she is the only type of leadership that's going to turn this ship about. I'm not contributing to any local or national parties this election cycle. We've been let down too many times. I'm putting my money on individual candidates that have a shot, and stand for what we need in this country, I don't care where they are running. Harry will be getting huge donations from everywhere, and is expected to raise 35 million dollars trying to keep his seat. Sharron is trying to get one million people to donate $25 to her campaign. I just submitted my $25 and I challenge all you who can to also send her 25 bucks. It's little more than a box or two of ammo, and other than shooting at a target of Harry Reid, I can't think of anything that feels better! Here's the link: https://secure.piryx.com/donate/MqXmkiis/SharronAngle/victory I encourage you to take up my challenge, post here when you do, and lets see if we can help Harry retire. I am not affiliated with the Angle campaign, but have taken this on because I believe she is what this country needs, and know that Harry isn't.
  16. wow, just imagine what would happen if you stored your lock picks with your switchblade knife
  17. I see a raid on Gatlinburg coming! What a news story!
  18. I thought you choose a lower 'cause you liked the roll mark art. You mean there's a difference in 'em?
  19. I love kel-tecs, they will give your hand a workout.
  20. you'd think yotes and skunks would be open season then.
  21. I believe you can shoot deer anytime you like, season or no, on your property of they are a nuisance?
  22. I know you're right about that! But I can't seen dropping nearly 3K right now on something like that. Maybe $800, and I expect lower quality. the pvs7 my bud has is quite unbelievable. It would be easy to pick out a man at SEVERAL hundred yards with just a little moon light. After searching thru some threads, regarding the law, if you're not using any added light is it still a no no? Actually I'm wanting to pick off the occasional skunk or yote on my own property.
  23. Kinda wanting to get something in night vision gear. Originally just thought I'd get a monocular of some sort so I could see what the dogs were barking at after dark. But a buddy who has some high end stuff said if you see it, you're probably gonna want to shoot at it. So his suggestion was to get something that could be mounted for use on a rifle. Got an eotech that's NV capable, but magnification would be nice. He's got PVS14 and man it looks great, but my budget is way lower than that. Looked at some of the Yukon stuff at the gun show and the 2.5x50 wasn't bad. Hard to tell though since you're looking through a lens cap with a pin hole. Sometimes I wonder if they don't make the pin hole a little larger just to make it look better. Most reviews I've hunted up are apparently people who've never looked through any other NV before, particularly the higher end stuff, so they really don't know how the Yukon compares, and just say it looks good. I don't expect it to look like the 14, but also want something better than looking through the bottom of a coke bottle. I'd like something good out to 150 yds, but want to stay in the sub $800 range. anybody out there got experience with the lower priced equipment?
  24. All I've got to say is: Was Shakespear right in his play Henry VI when he said: " First thing we do, is kill all the lawyers. " ?
  25. either way, it still makes him a moron.
