  1. hope you don't mean shorter than 18"
  2. time will tell, she's probably about as good as what we ended up with in the governors chair.
  3. went to the one in Louisville, should be great right here in our own back yard.
  4. I have a Rem 1100 setup for HD, have had for years. It's 100% reliable I used to shoot 3 gun matches with it and never a bobble. Even take it out sometimes for a bird hunt or trap shoot. Back before the popularity of pistol grips on shotguns I always got comments from the over/under guys at the trap house. Especially when I'd hit 20 out of 25.
  5. Ran across a well used 870. Deerslayer style with rifle sites. Kinda rough shape with some pitting on the outside. Bore looks fine. Functions fine, stocks are just average. It will take 3" shells, 12 Ga. What's a going price for something like this? I've been wanting one to makeover into a tactical shotgun and planned on sand blasting and parkerizing it anyway, so the poor finish and rust aren't a big deal to me.

    S&W Model 19

If it was an older one they can have pretty sweat actions, I've got one and it does. Also have a 66 which was the same gun in stainless. You could probably keep an eye out and find a nice used one.
  7. I bought a Millet 2.5 from Midway about a year ago for scout gun mounting and it has worked very well. Think it was about 60 bucks. Nice and clear and can be mounted with low rings. Might check and see if they still carry it.
  8. I've built several from flats, none from pre-fabricated receivers and while it is certainly more difficult and time consuming than an AR it is doable if you're handy with tools. Nothing about them snaps together like an AR. Never gotten one together much faster than 8-10 hours not including any finish application (park or spray on). If it's a commercial receiver the entire receiver will be heat treated, not just the trigger and hammer holes. To be honest, with the price of parts kits compared to buying a completely finished gun, and since you're not doing your own labor, I doubt if you'd be able to come out on a build these days. Finished guns have gotten pretty cheap. Of course, there's nothing like the feeling of accomplishment when doing your own, but then that's not what you're planning. I'd be glad to offer you some tips and have a pretty through set of steps of procedure to keep you on track for doing things in the right order I'd be glad to share if you're interested.
  9. do you have anything other than your receiver?
  10. I'll check into them, $75 is not bad if it will work, thanks.
  11. The maglite is close to what I need, it's just clunky and heavy. I knew the surefires were pretty hard on batts. The IR stuff is mainly for using night vision. While you can use regular white light and it does provide good long distance viewing, it also tends to spook things at night that you're trying to view. They make a special IR focusable LED weapon light that's pretty small and will illuminate out to 200+ yds or better, but it's kinda pricey and of course can't be used for anything else. I've got one of those cheap Harbor Freight 10 million candle power lights and it will light up the hillside that's nearly 800 yds away when using NV, but it's not practical.
  12. I originally thought it was a Colt Sauer Grand African in .458 Win. Mag when my thumb about ripped my cheek off. But then I got a Styer straight pull bolt action in 8mm x57R and some vintage 1938 Nazi ammo, and as it turned out the Colt wasn't all that bad. Of course it's the most fun in mid August when you're just wearing a t-shirt.
  13. Hopefully out past 100 yds.
  14. I didn't know if the Surefires would focus down and provide a distance light or not. I know they are really bright in general. Certainly would be easier to handle than this huge 4D cell.
  15. wow, I think I'd end up with a whole new light if I did all that! Normal LEDs don't emit much light in the infrared spectrum so they don't work well for night vision. I'm wanting something I can use an infrared filter on. I saw some Xenon replacement bulbs, they may be the best I can do without going crazy.
  16. wow that is bright. Although I was trying to stay away from LEDs if possible.
  17. Anybody know if theres an upgraded bulb that would put out more light for a 4D cell Maglite? It's got the standard Krypton bulb now. Thought there might be a Xenon or some other high output bulb I could re-lamp it with.
  18. BLC2 on .223. I bought some of Midway's blemished .224 tips a while back. Looked at them and they looked fine. Now that I'm loading them I know what the blemish is. The cantelure, it varies wildy from slug to slug. Fortunately I wasn't planning on crimping anyway. For varmint hunting is there a real need for crimping in an AR? I've worked up a really nice load and hate to change it now with a crimp.

    Rhino

I saw the one at Lebanon Gun shop, didn't handle it but it was bigger than I expected. Kinda ugly in my opinion.
  20. JAB, you make an excellent point and well referenced. Unfortunately I missed another yote yesterday morning, too dark to see the cross hairs in my scope. Two of them were together about 60+ yds from my back door. Dogs were having a fit, didn't seem to phase the yotes.
  21. nice, I made a dueling tree for .22s out of 1/4 scrap. Works good. My son and I have dumped more than a couple of bulk packs in an afternoon, it's a lot of fun. Also made a lollipop for centerfire handguns. Used 1/2 round plate about 8" in diameter. Mounted it on one of those fiberglass electric fence posts from TSC (less than $2) then pushed it in the ground. After you nail it once it will swing around making a good moving target. Been wanting to make a centerfire dueling tree, but all my scrap is 3/4 and that's a bit heavy for a 9mm to spin. Working on adding a bearing to make it go round easier.
  22. thank you mds3d for reminding everyone here of what this thread (and the one I started and was subsequently closed) is all about. Yes it needs to be in this forum. And no the thread is not about hunting per-say, it's about the elimination of pests and predators that are affecting the well being of our livestock and or domestic animals and property. No one on this forum including myself would ever advocate or engage in night hunting as it is strictly forbidden with the exception of coon hunting. Night time illumination devices are likewise verboten as we've been reminded. The discussion here is the safe and effective elimination of pests preying on personal property or livestock. I emphasis SAFE. And that's my main reason for engaging in this discussion. The last thing I want to do (other than being accused of hunting at night) would be accidentally shooting something I shouldn't have while trying to protect my property. So the real meat here (no pun intended) is to discuss the best way to effectively and safely dispatch wild animals that are a nuisance. A discussion of methods and equipment to that end would seem appropriate.
  23. my point exactly. this thread is not about hunting. The closed thread was never about hunting.
  24. this isn't a hunting thread, either
  25. doesn't really mention day or night, hum.
