Hmmmmm....   Its starting to get Real Busy in the "Rules Of The Game" section of the IDPA website.  So far it appears to me that most folks are reacting to the same issues as we have on this thread.   I really, really don't understand the change in times with the classifier.  I can't recall ever hearing anybody think that the times needed to be change.  This change is a complete disturbance of a founding standard.    I plan to submit my comments in a few days.

Only comments made through the website will be considered."    So you have to log-in to the IDPA website to make any comments.  You'll then a nice worded "thanks for your interest and have a nice day" email saying that they have your comment or suggestion.       

  Yea..., I sort of like those.    However, not too sure about the next rule and the sentence highlight in Red.  This goes against all know immediate action drills that I am aware of.  You clear a malfunction as soon as you realize it.  By this rule if the shooter notes a failure to go into battery after departing a shooting position, he or she must wait until they reach the next position and then must attempt to fire and then clear the malfunction.  Worst, I can see some shooters trying to back-up to the departed position.     R9.3. A firearm is deemed loaded when the magazine is fully seated and the slide is fully forward or the revolver cylinder is closed. If the shooter “drops” the slide prior to leaving a position of cover, and the slide fails to go fully forward into battery, this shall be considered a malfunction. No penalty shall be assessed as long as the shooter attempts to fire the firearm at the next shooting position. If the shooter attempts to correct the problem while moving to the next shooting position or before attempting to fire the firearm, then a procedural, for leaving cover with an empty weapon, will be assessed.

OK, I'm still reviewing this draft, but this on page 13 looks to be the answer to my input about target engagements.     R4.2. Tactical Sequence: A method of target engagement. For Tactical Sequence, all targets must be engaged with one round each before being engaged again. In the case of three (3) targets requiring two (2) rounds each, all targets must be engaged with one round to each target BEFORE reengaging the targets with another round in any order (1-1-2-1-1). Tactical Sequence may not be used for targets farther than 10 yards. Tactical Sequence may not be combined with Tactical Priority (near to far or from cover) on the same targets. Tactical sequence is only required when it is specified in the stage description. Make up shots must come after each target has been engaged with at least one round.     I trust that everybody designing COFs will take note that Tactical Sequence is ONLY REQUIRED when it is specified in the description.  The paragraph above was the way it was written in the draft review back in 2003 - 2004.  Somehow when the 2005 rulebook came out the paragraph was broken up between COF Rules and the Glossary and the wording in Red was missing.

  Or maybe its a way to thin out the biggest class at any IDPA match - - - SSP Sharpshooter.   I see a lot of folks becoming "High Marksmen" when in the past they were Sharpshooters in SSP.

New Rule Book is now posted on the IDPA website.   88 pages total.   On page 57 & 58 the classification times are now different.  The classification times for SSP have been shorten by about 10 seconds making it nearly the same as ESP.  This might be the area that brings the most comments from members.   OH..., and on page 5 they apply the incorrect rank of Colonel to Jeff Cooper.  He was a LtCol, USMCR - - - never got his Eagles.

  Why?

  In the early IDPA years they were "frown upon."  It was seen as too IPSC like.   In fact corporative support in the beginning was very restrictive.     I admit that it was taken too far early on, even polo shirts with a manufacturer's logo being banned by some MDs.   And I also admit that there is no way to ever put that genie back into the bottle - - - just one of those things that I gripe about just for fun.  :D

From   When The Balloon Goes Up    My comments in Red.   Confirmed IDPA Rule Book Changes   -  Allowance for shooters to move backwards in classification.  This should answer my recommendation in regard to Senior Shooter reclassification.   -  SSP has been redefined to be for striker fired guns.  Does this mean there will be a new division for DA/SA firearms?   -  Changes to the clothing rules (vest, kneepads…)  Hope that this will outlaw the Sponsorship Shirts, or as one new shooter once asked me, "Who are those guys in the NASCAR outfits?"   -  Changes to the classifier.  This could be the most substantial change.  If this changes the times or COF it might be a game-changing "Designated Hitter" like deal for IDPA.

Tribal only in the sense that it was just one of those things that was understood among the early armed professionals who stood up IDPA. We wanted something other than what IPSC had become. I'm talking about 18 years ago. Its a far different shooting world now. Back then having a carry permit was a rare deal and competitive combat shooting was indeed very tribal. And I reckon running can be tactical. I've just never seen it or trained to it in a CQB environment. Indirect fire coming in - - - now that is a different deal.

Well Yes, back in the early days. Yet the rulebooks have never had anything in them in regard to movement - - - Fast or Slow. It was just assumed that tactical movement techniques would be used, which isn't running at full speed through a shoot-house. You know that the spirit of the competition has been voided when John Scoutten on a Shooting USA show gets away with taking baby steps while retreating to a different FP at the S&W indoor nationals and Nobody calls a FTDR on him.

Never seen a way to cheat with a Blind Stage. There is still an SO and scorer following the shooter. But when I've done then...., I tend to be wearing Body Armor. However, good comment about the whole retaining ammo deal. Some Background...... Early on in IDPA it was assumed that most if not all reloads would be from slide lock. The reload with retention and tactical reload was seen as something to be done when there was a break in the action, so sticking that half-full mag into your pocket seems like a good thing because it is. There was also this idea that those reloads would somehow be off the clock. I never could figure out how that was to be done in the middle of the stage. I think this came about because the earliest "test" matches where HOT matches. In other words, at the end of the COF you were commanded to "Reload & Holster." Sort like the old Single Stack Invitationals. However, what happened was that COFs started to dictate the type of reloads to be done and where they had to be done (the 2005 rulebook rewrite fixed that issue). And then the evil round dumping appeared!

DanO, Maybe I did a poor job on writing my post, because I also dislike COFs that are designed to catch the shooter in PEs. My concern is this IPSC-need-for-speed that is an erosion of sound tactics, techniques and procedures in IDPA. I would like Blind stages with no walk-throughs, only a scenario that sets the stage. That lets the shooter engage the threats based on their training and experience. However, that (Blind Stages) would be hard to do when you have the great variations in skills at a IDPA match. Heck, its hard to do with trained professionals. But I must disagree in regard to your comment about retaining ammo. Been There - Done That - Needed ALL the Ammo to finish the Fight.

By the early 1990s, there was a realization that IPSC had become such a game that it no longer had any application to what happens when real shooting breaks out. Thus, some of us who where there when IDPA began back in 1996 are concerned that we are getting away from the first sentence on page 1 of the current rulebook that IDPA is, "..., a shooting sport that simulates self-defense scenarios and real life encounter." In the early IDPA matches the rationale "Would this Happen" and "Would You Do That" in a real gunfight where taken VERY Seriously! The Failure To Do Right was the enforcement hammer to keep everybody in the combat mindset and used often when inappropriate techniques were used by a shooter. Running around using the "IPSC Sprint" support hand off the firearm, strong hand holding the firearm high, arms pumping while RUNNING to the next firing point was often pointed out as an example of what would get FTDR penalties. Today, its starting to look like a track meet at some IDPA matches. The most notorious example was the picture from the 2011 Nationals showing a shooter running to her next firing point with her back to the threats - - - AND holding her firearm over her left shoulder pointing it behind her. After Hackathorn, Rauch, and Vickers left the BoD, the focus on tactics began to slip away. And its worth noting that all three of those guys had been in Gunfights.

  Now.....,  I wonder who you heard bitching about tactical sequence?  :whistle:   I did suggest that tactical sequence be left to the option of the shooter and not required by the COF.   Also recommended the following:   - All new shooters are "Off The Clock." - All new shooters take part without concealment. - Any shooter not an IDPA member will shoot "Out of Competition."  Their scores will only be listed with other OOC shooters and not as part of the overall match results. - Highest classifications are revoked when one becomes a Senior Shooter.  - No Running.  Only tactical movement techniques allowed, i.e., "Heed - Toe" method. - Additional Zero Down hits reduces overall time by 0.5 seconds for each hit.   And of Course.....   - No Sponsorship Shirts!    :devil:

I realize that it has taken 18 months to see the entire project to completion, however, I have always felt that it was more important to get the whole process right than to just push something through quickly...........     -  Trust this re-write will be based on the 1996 "original intent" of the these key founders - - - Ken Hackathorn, Walt Rauch, Larry Vickers.   -  Hope that it doesn't make IDPA more "IPSC - Like."

Its hard to see, so I can't tell for sure - - - but also check your grip.   Appears that your support hand thumb might be making contact with the slide.  You would be surprised at how little just a small amount of side pressure from a thumb will slow down the slide speed.  That can result in weak ejection and a failure of the slide from going into battery.    One way to check this is you have someone else fire the handgun.    If it has the same problems with a different shooter, then its the ammo or the firearm.  If another shooter has no problems, then maybe an adjustment of your technique might be worth a try.
