  1. I've always wondered, why is a "pistl shotgun" considered an AOW by BATF, but the Taurus Judge is not? Does anyone know?
  2. I have trouble with the "new technology" because there just isn't enough "real world" data on their effectiveness. The ammo manufacturers are really pushing the "new" ammo, not necessarily because it's better but because they want to make more $ and remain relevant. Most people don't target practice with defensive loads, therefore, a few boxes of ammo are all they need and until the ammo makers talk them into buying something new, that's all they will ever purchase. As far as commercially available defensive carry loads in 9mm, the Cor Bon 124 JHP+p has had the best real world track record of a 96% one shot stop rate. That makes it roughly equal to the Federal Hydrashok in .45 but not as good as .357 mag JHP or .40 JHP which run at about 97 -98%, but those are statistically insignificant differences. The Cor Bon "+p" is actually closer to a "+p+" that the LEO only rounds tout but there are no SAAMI guidelines that differentiate the two. Cor Bon pushes the envelope a bit (you will feel the differnce in recoil). All this being said, the "new technology" loads will probably deliver equal performance, but it hasn't been proven. Also, you will never get to the 100% mark, it's theoretically impossible.
  3. Medically speaking, one oz of ETOH (equal to one shot, one beer, or one glass of wine) is metabolized by the liver in one hour's time. Therefore, if one had 2 beers 2 hours ago, they would under no set of circumstances be considered "under the influence" because your blood level will be 0.00. This whole notion of "no amount of alchol is legal" has no justification either in the law, in the court's decisions, or in medical fact. I would certainly like to know who started this notion. Now, in saying that, I certainly wouldn't advocate more than one drink at least an hour before carrying and would strictly subscribe to the 1 hour per every 1 oz rule. Also, contrary to popular belief, If you drank that fifth of Jack last night and "slept it off", you are probably still drunk under the law. Only time gives the liver time to metabolize alcohol, it doesn't care whether or not you slept.
  4. What really bothered me about my experience was that fact that I'm not sure if the place I was at was a bar that served food or an restaurant that had a bar. Or it could have been a television that just had a restaurant and bar built around it. I'm telling you guys, televisions and guns don't mix!!!!
  5. I was at a restaurant waiting on my "to go" order watching a ball game on the tv at the bar while waiting, and yes I was armed. The "gentleman" (couldn't have been more than 25 years old and drunk) next to me asked who I was rooting for. I said nobody, because I'm a Tennessee fan (I don't remember who was actually playing, it was a Thursday night). Well he started going on and on about how badly UT sucked and how he was a Florida fan because of their "long history". I just reminded him that obviously he was very young and didn't realize that the Florida "history" only went back as far as Steve Spurrier. Well this kid went ballistic and started saying he was going to "$%*#" me up cause now he was in the mood to fight. I just told him "I'm a grown man and I'm not going to fight you. All I'm going to do is get my order when it's ready and walk out the door to go home to my wife." Well, of course he started yelling how I better leave and good for me that I'm chicken S#$%. So I got my order and walked out just as I said I would, but be very aware of what was going on behind me. Had I not been packing, I may or may not have fought the kid or engaged in a arguement. I'll never know. But, with a weapon on board, I knew that if all else failed, I had the upper hand and had no intention of aggitating the situation further in way that would force me to use it in a way that would end up making me lose my rights in any way.
  6. It's a joke, see the other thread about the 3.8.
  7. I can carry and conceal a heavier revolver than I can a pistol, at least that's been my experience, maybe yours has been different. My wife's snub nose .357 is a cinch to conceal whereas my M&P .40 is lighter but a bitch to keep from showing off.
  8. How about the XDm 9 3.8?
  9. They're trying to make this out to be some sort of pocket pistol, but it's actually a pretty large handgun. Did anyone check out the weight? over 27 ozs empty. I can't wait to see the guy who reads the ad and goes and sees it for the first time at the store.
  10. The .357 mag will go right through the target so it won't do as much damage. If I'm jumped from behind, I'll still have time to draw, aim and pull the trigger. I always aim for the head so I know I'll get 'em with one shot.
  11. I guess you missed the point of my post. The point is that the HCP class shouldn't be the first experience with a handgun. You should get experience before taking the class. Like you said, you wouldn't give kid a vette as a first driving experience. But you also wouldn't have them drive the Pinto for the test and then hand them the keys to the Vette right after. I doubt that the day she gets her HCP she's gonna put a .22 in her purse. She will probably put a 9mm or a .38sp revolver in it, so learn to use that weapon. 9mm's and .38's are not vettes, closer to Honda Civics.
  12. I'm not quite sure why everyone is suggesting the .22 except that they are easy to shoot. The whole purpose of the HCP class is to make sure you're gonna be safe with a weapon. Unless she will carry a .22, I would have her use whatever weapon she is likely to carry. When you have a 16 year old child who wants his/her DL, you take them out in a real car and teach them how to drive before you take them to the Department of Safety. You don't take them over totally unprepared and let them drive a go-kart because it's easier. I feel the same way about the HCP. Take her to the range and have her try (rent) several weapons in real self defense calibers, and actually teach her how to shoot until she is good enough to pass the live fire section. If you're not good enough, you need the practice yourself. The dirty little secret of taking your woman to the range for the first time is it's very sexy to both you and her. Just something about gunpowder....
  13. sorry it double posted
  14. The Power of the Dog by Rudyard Kipling There is sorrow enough in the natural way From men and women to fill our day; And when we are certain of sorrow in store, Why do we always arrange for more? Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware Of giving your heart to a dog to tear. Buy a pup and your money will buy Love unflinching that cannot lie-- Perfect passsion and worship fed By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head. Nevertheless it is hardly fair To risk your heart to a dog to tear. When the fourteen years which Nature permits Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits, And the vet's unspoken prescription runs To lethal chambers or loaded guns, Then you will find--it's your own affair-- But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear. When the body that lived at your single will, With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!) When the spirit that answered your every mood Is gone--wherever it goes--for good, You will discover how much you care, And will give your heart to a dog to tear. We've sorrow enough in the natural way, When it comes to burying Christian clay. Our loves are not given, but only lent, At compound interest of cent per cent. Though it is not always the case, I believe, That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve: For, when debts are payable, right or wrong, A short-term loan is as bad as a long-- So why in--Heaven (before we are there) Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
  15. It doesn't ban private sales or create a 15 day wait. It creates a 15 day wait on private sales. Liscensed dealers are excluded. Still total BS, but I wouldn't be surprized if the law wasn't being changed at the request of a dealer in the area. It puts the dealer at a decided advantage. All that being said, go to the first county out of town and make your deal. Municipal statutes have very short arms.
  16. I really appreciate the enlightenment. I always wondered, kinda like I always wondered how Dick became short for Richard.
  17. I still don't understand how they posted the whole street. Isn't the street public property? It's certainly not a park. can someone from Memphis explain how they justified this?
  18. My uncle was a bouncer at a club, here in Nashville, 20 yrs ago. 2 off duty LEOs came in with their weapons. My uncle wouldn't let them in because they were drinking but the owner overruled him. Next thing you know, one of them pulls his pistol on another patron over a pool game. Luckily, the guys partner was trying to get the guy to holster his weapon(guess he didn't feel like getting kicked off the force or going to the pen) which distracted him long enough for my uncle to come from behind and disarm him. HCP owners would most likely never try that kinda thing.
  19. The only people I know, for sure, make a 9mm 1911 are Springfield in their "loaded" version and Wilson in their "Special Ops 9". Colt is only making .45ACP, 10mm, and .38 super. Like another poster noted, reliability has been an issue, that's probably why most manufacturers have quit making them. There are too many reliable 9mm's available (HK, Glock, S&W, Beretta, SA, Sig) to waste your money on a weapon that may, and probably will, fail you when you need it. If you want a weapon like that, buy a Jennings/Bryco (Steve McNair's girlfriend bought her's for $100.00).
  20. There is a kit. I believe Tussey makes it. The problem is it is a complete upper, you can't just drop in the barrel. You then have to have a 'smith fit it to your lower. After all is said and done you could have bought a very nice 9mm because the cost will be somehere north of $700.00.
  21. Welcome, and thanks for the Moby Dick allusion. Not very often we have literary discussions on here, but we have been having quite a broadway theater debate lately.
  22. So, your old dog is a boy and neutered? They'll be fine in no time flat. The puppy will naturally be draw to the older dog, so she won't have a problem. The male will socialize very quickly, unless he's just a weirdo. You actually have a very compatable mix. Older females are the ones that are hardest to introduce a new dog to.
  23. I've always wondered, why would you change the spring to a lighter/heavier version? never actually seen a post or discussion anywhere that told me the utility of this. Is there something wrong with the original configuration?
  24. I've seen reviews of them(some with videos) and they were less than glowing. Generally the complaint has been that the springs aren't powerful enough to get the job done and even something as light as a sigle sheet of paper, in the way of the blade, will keep it from opening. I figured that's way too much money fro something that doesn't work.
  25. It just takes time. My female avoided my male for 6 months before she would let him touch her. There's no magical formula. Every situation will be different. But males will tend to be more social than females, therefore making the transition much quicker.
