Eric, my take on it is that you are more prepared than most...

I have a Safepacker, and I use it in the car. Straps to the seat belt and gives quick, easy access to the weapon. It also protects the weapon in the event of an accident, and when I'm moving the weapon back and forth between the car and the house. It also makes a good bedside holster. Open the flap and tuck it between the mattress and box springs with the weapon hanging vertically and you have quick access to your weapon in the middle of the night, either at home or when you travel.

I was wondering about this myself and whether or not my MN25 would be a good choice. While I don't hunt, I've heard of its ability to take down a deer.

David, to disagree on this is fine. But to say that it's silly? Come on, man. Is it silly to refuse to patronize an anti-2A business that posts "no weapons" on its front door over spending your money with someone who supports our RTKBA? I don't think so. I won't use PayPal either for that very reason.

This paragraph just disproved everything you've said. I'm just simply not going to bet my life or the life of my family on the assumption that the BG will turn tail and run just because I've notified him that I have a gun. Even Mas acknowledges that possibility in the statement you provided. To each his own, I just think that your strategy could get you seriously injured or killed.

Dress around the gun and you won't have a problem. It might mean buying some trousers a size bigger and carrying IWB. How committed are you to carry? A good holster that fits the gun and a good gun belt are also essential. I guarantee you that you would not be able to tell that I am carrying a Hi Power with 2 extra mags and a 442 as a BUG with two reloads when all I am wearing is a T shirt and shorts.

What you are advocating is the same as telling someone who tries to mess with you that "you know karate". While that may be true, and you may really be able to mess him up, simply notifying him of that is probably not going to be enough to deter him. I'm willing to bet that in my scenario, if there are multiple attackers, the only one I have to shoot is the first one through the door. Wouldn't that be the same thing as notifying them that I have a shotgun? In your scenario, they don't know if you are telling the truth or not. In mine, there's no doubt.

Well, that's the thing... they're going to make more of whatever people are willing to shell out their money for. Just because a gun is popular and a good seller doesn't mean that it has any practical SD or CCW application, no matter what the firearms manufacturer says.

Remember the young girl who was moving into an apartment off campus at UT Martin recently and was raped in front of her parents while they were forced to watch and the mother was forced to strip? Same thing could happen in a remote area in a park, so scenario 2 is very possible. Had one or both of the parents been armed, it could have turned out very differently and the world could have been rid of one more scumbag.

I would say that my chances of survival are much better if they don't know where in the hell I am. If I'm behind the bedroom door or in the closet with the muzzle of my shotgun pointed at the door and they're stupid enough to come in, then the advantage is mine. All I have to do is pull the trigger. They have to find me before they can hit me. Seconds count. Besides, they're in MY house. They decided to invade MY home. By your logic, carrying concealed would be "inviting a gunfight" over open carry. Why do you want to give the BG any advantage? And that's not arrogance, it's doing what you have to do to protect yourself and the ones you love.

This is something I didn't even think about until I read this thread. I've had my HCP for about 12 years but didn't start carrying until about 3 years ago. Prior to that, I didn't even carry one in the car as I was one of those who was able to predict the time and place that I would be attacked. In 2004, I was pulled over one night on the way home, and I handed the officer my DL only. He took it back to the cruiser and ran it, but when he came back he never said a word about my HCP, and at the time, it didn't even occur to me that I might need to mention it to him. Does that mean that he knew about it and just didn't say anything, or does it really come up when they run your DL?

It goes without saying that you should know the location of everyone in your house who SHOULD be there. And the only reason the police would be there would be if someone in the house had called 911, which should be done immediately after assessing the threat.
