Sen. Alexander's staff person called me back after I called and left a message requesting explaination on why he did not sign the letter. She told me Sen. Alexander did not sign it because he thinks things have been working pretty well "as is" and he would not support a change unless the Dept. of Interior determined a change was needed. While this rule change appears to be a step in the right direction (if it is approved) it may not be as beneficial as I first thought for those of us in Tenn. The rule change request is for the Parks and Federal lands that currently prohibit carry and transport through their areas to abide by the laws of the state in which they are located. As it is now, in Tenn. we are not allowed to carry in State Parks or National Forrests. In North Carolina you can carry in State and National Forrests but not in State Parks. So it looks like it will take changes in the laws of both states to allow carry in the Smokey Mountain National Park.

I would encourage any and all members of this forum to do the same. Its possible there is a legitimate reason why he did not cosign this request by Sen. Crapo ( although I can't imagine what it would be given that 47 other Senators found time to do so ) but I think that Sen. Alexander needs to know that the Second Amendment Supporters in this State are watching to see how he represents us in D.C. Sen. Mike Crapo has submitted a request that the Interior Dept. allow handgun carry in National Parks and Wildlife Refuges in accordance with the laws of the states in which they are located. This would be a big step in the right direction. 47 Senators cosigned the request. You can go to the NRA website for the details and read the letter. I don't know if it makes any difference but Sen. Crapo is from Idaho and the Sec. of the Interior who is able to effect this change is the former Gov. of Idaho.

Very good point. And when you live in a den of thieves like she no doubt does it becomes even more difficult and important to do just that.

I think the mindset of the newspeople who did this story is the thing that really grabbed my attention when I first saw this. It seems to never occur to people who are of this persuasion that putting people away who commit violent crimes for extended prison terms is the only way that the violent gun crimes is going to be reduced or stopped.

I posted this same question on another website and got this response: "Traps, nets and unloaded weapons may be possessed within a temporary lodging or mechanical mode of conveyance when such implements are rendered temporarily inoperable or are packed, cased or stored in a manner that will prevent their ready use." http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text....0.1.1.2.0.1.4 If this link is correct (and it looks like it is) it would seem that by following the rules for storage while there would make it legal to have a gun in any National Park. The "no firearms allowed" restrictions that are listed for some parks may just be a holdover from the days before carry permits became so common.

Tim, Here is an example of what I mean. I took this from the Yellowstone NP website: It seems there is a difference between the Parks if the Smokies rule is "No Firearms Allowed".

I have been under the impression that if one is transporting a gun through a National Park you are OK to lock up your unloaded weapon in the trunk or out of reach and lock up the ammo in a different location. I know several Parks have this as their "rules" spelled out on their websites. And this is what I have always done with my handguns when visiting a National Park while traveling. However, this morning I was reading from the Smokey Mountains website and they simply state "no firearms allowed". My question is: Are there different rules for different Parks? Or is the general rule that I have always obeyed superceeded by an individual Park's stricter rules? If so, this ought not to be.

We've seen politicians pander for the pro-gun vote many times and use the "I won't take your hunting rifles away" in their feeble attempt to gain our support. I am not pushing anyone towards a vote for Huckabee. I thought the video I posted was kinda funny and thought others might find the humor in it as well. But with any 60 second commercial you can only say so much. All bases cannot be covered. But Huckabee does have a very pro 2nd Amendment record as Gov. of Arkansas and his website has some very pro-gun statements that sound like he is a very good friend to us.
