I'd like a pair of shepherds one of these days for just that reason.

Where are all these M1 Carbines Coming from?
Mark@Sea replied to a topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
Plenty of '06 at the house, feel free. The Garand is to the carbine as an F350 is to a radio flyer wagon. One is a lot of fun - the other is serious business. Sigh... Sue has adopted two of my guns in as many weeks... I'm just glad the Garand is a little too big for her. -

Mike, I doubt I will care much in 65 years But stop by the house in a month or so and check out the Garand I picked out. -
In his day you could call it as you see it without being accused of being a racist, a hick, a bigot, illiterate... the list goes on. I heard a lot about how 'dissent is the highest form of patriotism' from our socialist pals the last 8 years. If a certain socialist moves into the white house, I wonder how long it will take for dissent to become the fevered, treacherous rantings of the 'fascist' fringe?

In that era, the expression 'good enough for government work' meant it met very high standards indeed. Good designs executed with quality material and workmanship. You'd have a job convincing me that any modern firearms are the bargain that these surplus carbines and rifles are. -
Doc, would you PM (or e-mail) me some contact info? I'd like to buy some of that myself, but haven't a clue where to start

CMP, after the initial orders, relaxed their restrictions on the Inlands and Underwoods. I'm afraid a lot of dealers jumped on it. -
Mike and I had a chance to shoot together a while back. I was very happy with the groups I was getting from my '61 Navy. I was using, I think, 18 grains of fffg behind an oxyoke wonderlube patch. Lots of fun - we'll have to do that again sometime, Mike.

Somehow I missed that one. Darn

Democrats - still trying to surrender to the British

We invaded Iraq because Hussein was providing material support to Al Qaida. It is possible that we haven't improved that situation, but his support at this point is a lot more, umm, spiritual in nature. In some reality perhaps it is better to have Al Qaida active in this country rather than Iraq (where they got piled up like cordwood) and Afghanistan (also stacked). Some reality - but not mine. In my world, I'd just as soon we promoted an active defense, as far from our shores (and homes, and shopping malls) as possible. As for never leaving Iraq... good point. After all, we invaded Germany in 1944 and we're still there. Terrifying, isn't it? The price? Have you forgotten so quickly the price we paid for NOT dealing with bin laden? Was the price they paid in WWII too much? How about the revolutionary war? Go ask soldiers today, and vets of the wars the democrats left us alone to win, if they hold so cheap that which they bought.

Found on Larry Corriea's (HK - You suck and we hate you) blog in response to a cretin: Your presidential nominee is a smooth-talking socialist who wants to take money from the productive and give it to every social program you can imagine. His background is as a community agitator. His mentors and friends are criminals, terrorists, and the least crazy one just plain hates white people. His running mate wrote the assault weapons ban, and this is while he’s now telling us he supports our 2nd Amendment rights to hunt ducks. This good blogger bashed Mad Ogre because he voted for George Bush. Dude, I voted for George Bush. Doesn’t mean I like him a whole lot. But I would still take him over Al Gore (destroy the economy for a global crisis that may not actually exist, and if it does, we may or may not have anything to actually do with it) or John Kerry (gee whiz, another east coast elitist prick, who wants to tax us to death and take away our firearms, what a winning combo). If I grate on you, I’m going to try to turn that up to a friggin’ belt-sander. I’m no Republican shill. I’m a Conservative. That means that I mistrust the government, and am of the firm belief that anything they touch turns to crap. So does George Bush suck? Yeah, a lot, primarily when he acts like a Liberal. But that whole killing terrorists thing falls under providing for the common defense, and he does that way better than the schlubs the other side keeps nominating. The sad fact is, if your people were running the show, Iraq would be a smoking hole, and the bad guys would be here. In reality, we won, we killed piles of them. I’m actually looking at taking a contract admin gig for a couple of months in a place that Harry Reid, less than 6 months ago, was ready to cede to the bad guys. We have an energy crisis because the Democrats have stood firmly in the way of using our own resources. We’re in a financial crisis because most Democrats and a fat share of Republicans who flunked Econ 101 have mandated stupid behavior on the part of financial institutions. (and if you want to call me stupid about that, I spent 6 years as a financial analyst for a Fortune 500 company. I would love to tell you just how useful Sarbanes-Oxley actually is.) I don’t care for George Bush because of things like what we’re seeing this week. I’m a capitalist. If a business fails, it deserves to fail, and have its assets bought by somebody smarter. When you prop up stupid behavior for years and years, eventually there will be a correction. We’re seeing that correction now. If government had stayed out of this to begin with, then we wouldn’t be seeing the massive problem we are now. But when you dam the river, with bigger and bigger dams, when it fails, it is going to be a doozy. With the government not jumping in all the time, we would see a constant punishing of stupidity and rewarding of smarts. But when the government gets involved, it mandates stupidity, punishes the smart, and then takes their money to give to crack whores.

When Republicans were in control of congress, financial issues were the fault of the Republicans. Democrats are now in control of congress, and financial issues are the fault of the Republicans. How does that work, exactly? -
I picked out a service grade with a new CMP birch stock. Muzzle gauged at 0! I'd write 'em a little note, requesting a service grade/cmp stock/good bore. They are very accomodating (and the little redheaded gal at Anniston is cute as a button, to boot).

2How, CMP had a half dozen tables at the Hampton gun show/Garand Collectors Association yearly meet. They have a fair supply of Garands in several grades, rack and service grade Inland carbines, a very small supply of Krags and some pretty darn nice M44 mossberg 22 trainers from the 40's. I'll bet they brought a truckload to Perry, too - but sold out quick, as usual. Check the rifle sales button on the CMP website for what is currently available and what price. Times change - when I bought my first CMP garand, it was one rifle per person per lifetime. After Clinton had thousands of them destroyed, though, they changed the rules. You can now buy 12 service grade garands per year.

Over the past couple of years, CMP - the place you get M1 Garands and M1 carbines - has changed / relaxed their requirements. I thought it might be helpful to post the current requirements. US Citizenship and age - copy of birth certificate, passport, proof of naturalization, or any official government document that shows birth in the US or otherwise states citizenship as US. A drivers license is proof of age, but is not proof of citizenship. Membership in CMP affiliated organization - copy of current membership card or other proof of membership. Over 2000 affiliated organizations. Membership in many can be accomplished online. CMP has a list of affiliates at their website, and if you can't find one locally they will find one for you (email them at custserve@odcmp.com or call them at 256-835-8455). Military/National Guard active/reserve/retired service, as well as LEO including retirees satisfies this requirement. Firearms related activity - proof of participation with any marksmanship related activity or other firearms safe handling. Current or past military or LEO service, Handgun carry permit, C&R or standard FFL, hunter safety course completion, as well as any competition or clinic, or range official certification all meet this requirement. Legal Eligibility - if you can legally buy a firearm from your local gunshop, you can buy it from CMP. The info you submit will be submitted to NICS to verify this. Ordering information and form: http://www.odcmp.com/Forms/1orderform.pdf

Joseg, according to the little icon under your avatar you are active or retired military. You also hold an HCP, right? CMP's requirements have changed. There are more than 2000 affiliated clubs and organizations throughout the country, membership in many of these can be done online. Go to WWW.ODCMP.COM and click on the "CLUB INFO" tab. If you have problems finding a club, call the CMP (256-835-8455) or e-mail custserve@odcmp.com and they will find one for you. Membership in VFW, AL, DAV, MCL etc. also qualifies. US Military active or reserve, or National Guard, including retirees. Law enforcement departments, agencies, organizations and associations, including retirees. There is also a requirement for proof of participation in a marksmanship related activity, which can be satisfied by providing documentation of current or past military or LEO service, HCP/Concealed carry license, C&R license, completion of hunter safety courses, or certification from a range, club or LEO official. So qualifying organizations and marksmanship activity are extremely simple to satisfy, and you are probably ALREADY QUALIFIED! Get out your ID card, make a few copies, go see a notary public. Full instructions and the forms are at this link: http://www.odcmp.com/Forms/1orderform.pdf

I can say that a .50 makes wonderful pirate repellent. Really hate pirates. Would love to see one of the SEAL teams take them out. Wonder if Spetznaz is going to get a workout soon?

R1100R, I have an IHC, an H&R, and when I hit my next port I'm sending in the order form for a Springfield from CMP.

70below, too bad you didn't make it up to one of the shoots at my place. Well, maybe when I get back sometime next year... I'll break out a Garand, an FAL, and an M1A for you to compare. Might be a tough call, each has something to recommend it. Having owned several examples of each over many years, I would not hesitate to recommend the Garand first, the M1A second (assuming you find one with GI parts) and the FAL (DSA makes an excellent, reasonably priced example) third. I would be willing to put a small sum on the Garand against the AK - say 300 yards, iron sights, lets say a dozen standard dinner plates as targets. First one to hit all their targets wins.
