My wife stopped a carjacker today
Mark@Sea replied to Mark@Sea's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Wish I could hug her, but I'm in Charleston at the naval weapons station.... Location was the Lynn Garden/11W offramp. Who would I report it to besides you guys? Too late for the police to care. Good luck, Rightwinger, it took me a while (about two years, I guess) to convince Sue to carry. -
My wife stopped a carjacker today
Mark@Sea replied to Mark@Sea's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
After she got through the red light, she pulled into a parking lot and called me (not the police....). She got my voicemail. I didn't get her message for another hour or so. She didn't even think about calling the police. She will, if there is a next time. (we had a little chat about it). By the way, she said she felt very calm during, and very shaken/scared afterwards. He crossed a two lane offramp, and in response to her commands to stop he continued to advance and said he "just wanted to ask a question". I have a feeling that he got an answer to his question when he put his hand on the door handle, though. -
Moped, I will get pics this weekend. The ship I am aboard is at Charleston Naval Weapons Station, I took the pistols to my brother-in-laws' place about 40 minutes away after I picked them up. Gate guards and the like just don't have much of a sense of humor, you know...

In Kingsport. While she was stopped at an offramp stoplight, a guy (mid thirties, dirty, backpack) approached the car. Ignored 3 verbal commands to stop. When he put his hand on the car door she put her .38 in his face. He left abruptly. She's pretty happy now about learning to shoot, and getting her carry permit.

ATF KILLS TN FIREARMS FREEDOM ACT!
Mark@Sea replied to GLOCKMEISTER's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
BATF contradicting state (or hell, federal) law? Color me shocked... Still can't get over the chutzpah of an unelected federal employee telling a state legislature to piss up a rope. -
Yeah, but did you get his german pioneer bayonet? 20+ inches of sawbacked naked steel adapted to an AR? In some ways, Mike is a sick puppy Whole lot rather he were writing than building uppers, but...

Looking for info on WWII M1 Carbine that was my Grandpa's
Mark@Sea replied to a topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
For the bore, use a boresnake. Don't let a rod come anywhere near the barrel. For the metal, there are any number of excellent gun oils. For the sling: Pecard Antique Leather Conditioner. The stainless 1858, brass framed pocket dragoon, and two steel frame / fake ivory grip 1858 pietta's I picked up from the guy were all wall hangers - never fired. Dry fired a little, but thats' all. Handling marks in the bluing. For what he was asking I couldn't leave them there, but I now have (putting it mildly) a surplussage of 1858 Remington clones. Anyone wants one, let me know.

I'll just note that if you pay for something, you get a lot more of it. In the 60's the gov't started paying welfare to single mothers. Wasn't a huge problem statistically; there were societal dampers on being unwed and pregnant. The fear of starvation really put brakes on that sort of thing, for example. But paying the poor girls a bit extra (per child) was the compassionate thing to do. Now unwed mothers, many teenagers themselves, are 'normal'. Anecdotes abound of young women getting pregnant not to start a family, but to collect that government bounty. The 'compassionate' response to unwed mothers led to an explosion of the problem. The problem isn't that people don't have access to health care. The problem is that a few can't pay for it. The compassionate thing to do, of course, is to mandate that others pay for them. Spreading the cost of the healthcare by means of taxing others, along with strict regulation of what hospitals and doctors are allowed to charge for their services. So, take the cost/benefit equation out of going to the emergency room. Imagine the results that will have on hospital services twenty years from now. Imagine the results of fixing prices in a commodity/service that depends on highly trained people, who for some strange reason don't care to go through years of expensive schooling and then donate their services for free, or work for an artificially lowered wage. No matter how you cut it, we'll have fewer doctors, fewer nurses, fewer hospitals. No doubt the services they provide will be available to all - you'll just have to survive the wait. No line jumping (unless you are a VIP, of course). Compassion is a fine and admirable quality. Forcing others to foot the bill, both in financial and practical consequences, is wrong, wrong, wrong. On the bright side, how about a proposal that we mandate that lawyers work for a fixed wage, affordable by all but the indigent? Say $40/Hour, that seems fair. After all, legal services are in high demand in this country, and are affordable by a relative few.

Linoge, I'm out of area, but you can borrow my helmet (full face, large), jacket (Joe Rocket or leather, your call) and the crappy chaps I have. PM me for a phone # if it sounds like a plan. Do you need to borrow a bike? Suzi Volusia. Standard break it/fix it or you're going to hell type of deal.

Need a little Refresher on shooting my BP Revolver!
Mark@Sea replied to a topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
The way I heard it, Colt built the guns to be dead on at 50 yards. Mine shoots a tad high at 25 too. -
Need a little Refresher on shooting my BP Revolver!
Mark@Sea replied to a topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
I use goex - I've found it cleaner, more fun, and while not as easy as the pellet charges, it isn't difficult by any means. Powder first, then a lubed wool wad (wonder-wads are great). Compress the wad, then drop a ball atop it and seat the ball. I've had no problems with chain fires using wonder wads, oversized (by a few thous') balls - note, you should shave a tiny ring of lead off the ball when you seat it, otherwise it is too small - and no lard. Cap goes on LAST! Gunshop near Greeneville sells powder, ball, caps, etc. Can't recall the name right off hand, though. Congrats in digging out the 1851. I just 10 minutes ago ordered one myself, the 1851 and the Dragoon (still out of stock, unfortunately) being the last two BP revolvers I wanted to add to the collection. -
UPDATE: No Guns Allowed In Johnson City City Parks
Mark@Sea replied to waynesan's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Laws don't keep the criminals out, nor will they make it appreciably more difficult for the police to figure out who the bad guy is (hint, he's the one shooting at you, officer). What Johnson City, Bristol and Kingsport really mean to say, is it is illegal to defend yourself. Smart move, folks. Lotta HCP carriers and elections will roll around sooner or later. So, hows' your resume looking? -
Sarah Palin plans to resign as governor of Alaska
Mark@Sea replied to greenego's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
+1, Smith. Maybe she stepped down because of the $500,000 + in legal fees that she has had to dish out this year to defend herself against frivolous 'ethics' suits? A quirk of Alaskan law makes her a target for any (many) liberal morons, and she can do nothing to prevent them from taking cheap shots (I think something like 15 'ethics violation' complaints since McCain picked her as his running mate). Maybe, as her salary is 125K/yr, she's figured out that this is a losing game for her, wastes her time, weakens her ability to do her job, and is costing her and Alaska more than it's worth to stay to the end of her term? Really, guys, the media (who are ever so fair and impartial) set her up, take her down, give her hell on a daily basis for months, cherrypick and edit her responses, create an artificial image that they manipulate like a puppet. They do these things because she scares hell out of 'em. Fine - we know by now they are the enemy. You're letting them accomplish what they set out for at the start, though, if you buy off on their BS. Yeah, I think the media with all their "digging" found out something - they found they can destroy reputations with rumors, destroy someones' finances with innuendo, and control a large percentage of the vote with whispers and lies. Because we let them do it. Palin's legal fees exceed $500,000 - Juneau Empire -
Glass, forward mounted for fast target acquisition (try typing that while intoxicamated). Iron sights (ghost ring type preferred) for when (not if) the glass breaks. .30 caliber or better, in a caliber that is widely available. Light weight and short overall length for a fast swing and easy carry. Extra rounds onboard (a spare mag, for example) for quick, handy reloading. Col. Cooper felt a bolt action would better meet weight/reliability requirements than any autoloader. Accuracy wasn't a primary consideration. The concept is a dependable, easy-to-feed rifle suitable for very fast offhand first shots. Evaluate mission requirements before deciding on hardware. SunTzu, the MN fails the requirements on several of points, primarily that of being a widely available caliber (for your expected AO). Secondary consideration is reliability. Far be it from me to suggest the MN isn't completely reliable, but you may want to pack along a sledgehammer, screwdriver, and 2x4 for those lightning quick second shots... If I were bound and determined to turn a milsurp (read cheap) rifle into a scout, my choices would be a spanish mauser in 7.62, yugo M48 mauser or a swiss K-31. None fit the requirements of ghost ring sights, the second two fail the widely available ammo test, but all are very reliable (as Tam put it, the mauser action might not be as dependable as an anvil, but it depends on the make and model of the anvil), hard hitting, can mount a forward optic and are inexpensive enough not to hurt too much when you hacksaw the barrel. Hard to beat the speed of the K31 for that second shot. As my overly developed physique is more suited to "find a hide and let the target do the sweating" than it is to "go looking for trouble", I don't feel a strong need for a hacksaw, but if it makes you happy...

sub-moa and mosin nagant... two words I'd never thought to see in the same sentence.... Mike, you complain about your shoulder, I'll complain about my eyes. I can't even see a 1 inch target at a hundred yards anymore.

I vaguely remember something about adding a couple of drops of bleach to sterilize stored water....

Don't worry, folks. The same rigorous scientific standards practiced by people who meditate on chunks of crystal quartz to improve their love life, finances, and cure BO were used in writing this bill. Sure, gas will go to $7.50 a gallon, your electric bill will grow by a factor of about 2.5, and all those little luxuries produced, transported, stored and sold with the use of electricity and petroleum products will get just a tad more expensive, but hey, we'll be saving baby seals or something. Personally, I do think we should stop clubbing baby seals. I can think of another group at the moment with an overriding demand for the practice.

Checking out Ables' now, thanks for the link!

A buddy of mine in Norfolk is getting interested in BP pistols. He wants to try a '58 Remington next time he comes to visit. Anybody have a link to '58's on sale at a reasonable price? I've changed computers, and lost my previous links to BP sellers. If I can find something decent, it might make a good B'day present for my friend. Fondled my Colts last time I was home, it might be time to start thinking about another BP shoot...

Actually, I am glued to the pier in Charleston right now..... I figure I will get home once a month or so.
-
I'm not home, I am aboard USNS Mount Baker (an ammo ship - hahahahahahahaha...). Um, yeah, several windows upstairs can be opened. Next time I can get home, see if you can swing by. We'll get you another lantern or two rebuilt, and a stove. Gotta have a stove.

Actually, kidnapping innocents off the streets and beheading them for propaganda videos would be more in line with 'akin to our enemies'. Frankly, as a veteran, I have reached redline with the people who are so willing and eager to believe that our military is a) incompetent has no honor and c) has the same or lower level of morality than those we are currently facing in a shooting war. Believe me or not, the fact is that the people I served with over the last nearly thirty years have, as a rule, a strong sense of right and wrong, a strong sense of personal honor and how it demands we performed our duties, and better intelligence than the CNN/ABC/NBC ex-spurts. The accusations I've been reading and hearing over the last few years (especially the 'truthers') is an insult to my service, my honor, and my intelligence. If you happen to have documented evidence of a massacre of innocents. or of imprisoning innocents to meet some sort of quota, or something of that nature, bring it on. I'd help you attack 'the system' to get these injustices righted. Otherwise, put up, shut up, or arrange a time and place where we can settle this as gentlemen. /rant off.
