Think its' taken care of... Thanks. Hey, M&PC9, looks like a few folks are getting together my place Saturday about noon for a little shooting, you're welcome to drop by.

USFA makes what is undoubtedly the best SA colt clone available today. Old Vaqueros are darn near indestructable - I have a nice version in 44mag, and a custom belt rig. Unfortunately, it was made back when I was a lot younger - and a lot thinner. Oh well.... For SASS, I'd go with USFA. Otherwise, the original Vaquero. I have some Uberti firearms, they are well made, but they aren't up to either Rugers' strength (or support) or USFA's craftsmanship. The Single Action Revolver

I feel like crap... first head cold of the season?

That stinks... sorry to hear it. -
1911 Magazine Analysis: Conclusion 1911 Magazine Analysis Part 2 I'm pretty sure this is kicking a bunch of folks' sacred cows... but you might want to read the links. Granted, I usually shoot ball ammo, but I have a small quantity (about 25) of GI mags, and 3 wilson 8 rounders. I've found the GI mags to be more reliable.

Congratulations. True to form, the first thing new 1911 owners want to know is how to tinker with it. Usually the second thing they want to know is where to find a gunsmith that will fix it for them. My very best advice to you is to leave it alone. I would wager the gun performs fine out of the box - it feeds, cycles, ejects and is more accurate than you are. Tolerance stacking in replacement parts, or parts (such as springs) that are purposely out of tolerance, means that "drop-in" parts can lead to trouble. I know of very few people that know the platform better than John Moses did. Are you comfortable with hand-fitting parts in a system you don't understand? If you want to reduce the recoil, there is one change you can make with fairly minimal ill effect. Take a look at the firing pin stop. See how heavily the bottom edge is radiused? In the original design, the radius was much, much smaller. It was changed, at the request of the Army, in order to make it easier to cycle the slide by hand. You can buy an unradiused firing pin stop from Brownells, and lightly radius the bottom rear edge yourself. It will reduce felt recoil, at the cost of making it more difficult to cycle the slide by hand. The part will require handfitting. If anyone is headed that way, I have some ammo cans need delivering to PackinMama. PM me, please. Thanks Mark

Welcome, Kelly!

Your security posture is up to you, but as far as springs go, it isn't being compressed that wears them out, it is cycling from one mode to another. Personally, my bedside gun is loaded, safed, hammer back and ready to go.

I guess that the Democrats will try to pass the healthcare bill in Kennedy's name. Of course, if you want an accurate descriptor, they would call it the Mary Jo Kopechne Memorial health service, and patients would spend their lives getting taken for a ride by an elected official who will try their best to screw them, and then die while they wait for someone in the government to do the right thing. JeffsSig called it. Wow. They're proud of those things. It makes a good deal look a good deal better....

From a small local show.... Obviously a MKIII, NIB according to the older gent liquidating his collection... but I'm having trouble identifying the grips. Anybody recognise them?
-
I'd much rather support my local FFL for currently-in-production guns. Gunshows are like easter egg hunts, you never know what you'll find on the smaller tables, older gents selling off their collections. 95% is overpriced, or junk, or both, but sometimes you get lucky. I found my broomhandle mauser at a local show, at a great price. Same for my trapdoor Springfield.

Or grips, if you prefer... I looked high and low with no luck for wood grips to replace the plastic originals on my 2nd series woodsman*. Finally found them at grips4u.net. They also have some nice-looking 1911 grips, and several other makes/models (walnut 1903M's, anyone?). Will post photos when my order comes in. This post is more in the line of an advisory rather than an advertisement, since it was such a pain in the arrears to find decent looking replacements. *Yes, I know the plastic are the correct and original, but I prefer the look and feel of walnut.

Well, bussing in supporters seems to work for them during elections. Creating artificial support in TH meetings really isn't much of a stretch.

Well, I'll be a week late. When I get home and get a good photo of it next week, I'll be putting my (very nice) Ruger MKI on the chopping block. I bought a pair of pre-1920 colt 22 autos this week, have to make amends with my bank account.

When did TWRA stop shaving with Occams' Razor?

Capbyrd, try wrapping your stock in a towel, then putting it in a large black trash bag, and put it in the rear window of your car for a day. Best solvent I've found for cosmoline is kerosene. As for accurizing the MN, google 'cork mosin nagant' or check out Educational Zone #63 - Corking a Mosin Rifle to Improve Accuracy - Page 1

There have been a couple sightings on/around Clinch mountain, my wife heard what I think was a cougar near the house (just outside Kingsport).

Yeah, I have a .45 that sometimes (rarely) will do that - my old match pistol. Figure I've got 35K rounds through it, so maybe it has an excuse...

Don, if I have to shoot someone, I don't want them wounded/pissed off. I want them out of action. That review provides real-world results measured against accepted standards, which (call me crazy) beats subjective opinions based on like or dislike of the platform or cartridge. It rarely pays to disregard factors such as muzzle velocity, which has a direct bearing on terminal energy, regardless of cartridge or caliber. While the review doesn't measure muzzle velocity, it does provide raw data highly indicative of same. Original Poster wanted help in making a decision. The review provides data rather than opinion. Don't get me wrong, personally I don't want to get shot with a BB gun at three feet, but if I were making such a decision, I'd want all available facts before proceeding.

Just something Sue threw together... Must have been okay, though, Mike and Garufa were licking the plates... Good to see you two, though, CAS. Welcome back anytime!

Log splitter worked like a champ - split some 18 inch hickory with it today.

Very large thanks to Mike357, Garufa, and CAS for assisting with assembly of my new log splitter and wagon today! Titan14+ and the Mrs. also came by this morning (during the fun part of the day) and we all did some shooting. The big hit seemed to be Garufas' golf-ball launcher attachment for his yugo SKS. Pretty sure the neighbors over the ridge have a few golf balls in their yards now....
