  1. Federal Gov't is supposed to do two things - handle relations with foreign nations (and war is relations, of a sort), and run the post office. They do neither well. LOCAL governments provide police and fire protection, paid for with property taxes, usually. Y'know, we actually have a manual for this (read the Constitution, all of it). Have fun on your sandbar.
  2. I've seen a list on the internet, of links to stories of all the 'disasters' caused by global warming. Some of these are directly contradictory, some are just stooopid (global warming causes both acne and increased prostitution, apparently). Snake oil salesmen. Give 'em an inch.... I'm about ready to give them about 6 feet of good hemp rope. "global warming causes X" should be prima facie evidence of criminal fraud, punishable by hanging from the nearest tree or lamppost.
  3. Frequently my Garand and M1 Carbine, and on occasion my 1873 springfield and 1896 broomhandle mauser.
  4. A slim majority, using bribery, extortion, and unconstitutional tactics, are about to pass legislation overwhelmingly opposed by the citizens. This is, of course, Bush's fault. That excuse, like accusations of racism, is threadbare, annoying, and extremely unhelpful to those who actually grasp the finer points of what I like to refer to as 'reality'. With this vote, the democrat party declare their illegitimacy as representatives of the people.
  5. Won't help a bit. They go from elected position to appointed position to a "think tank" job to lobbyist, and/or run for a different position somewhere else. These "professional politicians " make a career out of theft and corruption, answer only to their political patrons, and dig the grave of liberty a little deeper with every new bill they pass. Many of them really don't care if you vote them out. Why should they? They have a guaranteed income as long as they please their owners. The many sleazy deals made to get obamanationcare passed, and the simple fact that it probably will go through in the face of overwhelming public opposition is proof perfect that 'by, of, and for the people ' has become by, of, and for the highest bidder.
  6. Pelosi is doing her best to make them more afraid of her than of their constituents. Some have been bought off, pretty blatantly. My country is becoming a banana republic.
  7. Ft Hood jihadi was also carrying a Beretta 92. Anyone have a good link stating the fn was what did all the damage? As sale of AP pistol ammo is a felony, last I checked, maybe you can lighten up, fra... deadeye. I understand there are still lots of auto sears listed in gunrag classifieds, too. Or have things changed, in which case we'll see tons of cheap ak ammo hit the market again? It's a fun gun, but for self defense wouldn't make my top 10 list. Top 20, either. Don't let my opinion, ballistics, or anything elae interfere with your happiness, though.
  8. Not listed at THR's list of activist orgs. May be a fax for money scam. They claim to have been around for fifteen years, but nobody has ever heard of them.
  9. I like the grip safety, personally. I like having a thumb safety as well. The best safety is the one between your ears. Keep your finger off the trigger, you shouldn't have a problem.

    Oscar

Sorry, when I saw the thread title the first thing to come to mind was man overboard drills. Very little coming out of Hollywood that I care anything about these days.
  11. Wish that were true, Strick. Mostly, the scientific field used (misused) to promote AGW is paleoclimatology - which is basically a methodology of guessing temperature hundreds or thousands of years ago. Mostly by digging up the remains of very old trees and measuring the growth rings. (Just one of the many controversies came up when it was discovered that the data in this field was cherrypicked. Out of hundreds of samples, only a handful agreed with the hypothesis, so they tossed out something like 98% of the data, and kept only the samples which supported their position). Other subfields such as ice core studies tend to disprove AGW, so they've been marginalized. We might have gotten some useful satellite data, but when it disagreed with other sources, someone checked and found it had been 'adjusted'. The guy at NASA handling the data? James Hanson. You may have heard that name before. In the seventies he was leading the call to panic over the impending ice age. In the early nineties he flipflopped and became one of the earliest authorities promoting global warming There is no new tech coming from this boondoggle, and apparently the only thing science is learning is how to lie in order to keep multimillion dollar grants coming in.
  12. Sorry to tell you this, Strick, but you're misunderstanding how cap and trade works. If all this money were going to new, cleaner methods of energy production it might be worthwhile. It isn't. AGW isn't science, it is a sales spiel.
  13. Once owned one of the big rugers. It's as bad as you think. Good start to a collection, though. Add a twenty two and a twelve gauge and you've got all the basics covered.
  14. Unfortunately, very well developed incorrect 'science' is worthless. See 'flat earth ', 'sun revolving around earth', 'powered flight impossible', various speed limits, etc etc ad nauseum. There was once a well developed and widely believed school of thought that claimed the earth traveled through the heavens on the back of a giant turtle. The scientific method was developed in order to test ideas. Skepticism is key to the method. AGW fails every test designed to measure the theory against the real world. Skepticism is anathema. As science, it is worse than useless. Time and money used to distort data and smear skepticism rather than finding a hypothesis that fits facts isn't advancing our knowledge. The cherry on top is that despite the hype, no money has gone to finding real solutions. The 'green' solutions billed as saving the earth are all, in the long run, more destructive of the environment. I want a cleaner environment as much as anyone, but I'm unwilling to triple the cost of energy for a feel good plan that is worse than useless.
  15. I read something interesting on this today... most global warming lobbyists are employed by big banking. Forecasting a ten trillion a year carbon commodities market, they don't care about the science, they just want everyone forced into buying - or selling. They get a cut from both. Something like a hundred billion dollars has gone into promoting 'public awareness' and studies over the last decade. AFAIK, there are no funded studies that assume AGW is a false hypothesis. Exxon initially put some twenty mil into the effort, caught a lot of political heat, and quit. Guess they figured they'd pass the costs to the consumers anyway, no point in sticking their neck out. Hey, if you get paid to prove something, your conclusion is either going to be proof, or "a need for further study". Who knew? All that money to prove the theory, with the only work to disprove being done by, essentially, a handful of unfunded retired guys. The retired guys are winning the scientific debate easily. That should tell you something.. If I were them, I'd be real careful about crossing streets and such. The brokerage commissions on ten trillion is a lot of scratch, and some very large, very powerful corporations and people are probably pretty upset about their scam getting blown.
  16. I'm a long way from Memphis, but you need 5 things. Fuel, air, spark, compression and timing. Should be possible to eliminate 4 of the 5. Good luck!
  17. It is a given, supported by every statistic available, that regulating or preventing the carry of arms does nothing to prevent or even reduce crime. Quite a bit of evidence suggests that the effects of such regulation are, in fact, in opposition to the stated goal. Call me cynical, I think the point is revenue generation. I'm happy the state is under 'shall issue'. I'd be happier if the process was cheaper. If it costs ten dollars to do a background check in the course of buying a handgun, why is it so much more expensive to get a permit?
  18. If your word is no good, I've no use for you. I've taken it in the shorts more than once to keep my word. That's just how it is.
  19. Postscript: Warmest year on record? Historical record is plain that during the mideival warm period, vinyards were grown in northern England. Raw temperature data from the modern era still shows the 1930's to be the warmest. If the brits start growing grapes, and the dustbowl comes back, I will believe it's getting warmer. Until then, it's plainly a case of "who you gonna believe, me or your lying eyes? ".
  20. I'd love to post links, but haven't found a way to do that with a cellphone. TMMT covered it pretty well, though. AGW (man-caused global warming) isn't a Theory. It is a hypothesis which has been repeatedly shown to not match the data. The biggest reason that hadcru AND NASA ignored FOIA requests is that the data they were using was clearly cooked - cherry picked, 'adjusted', and slanted toward supporting their hypothesis. The other excellent reason for them to not share raw data and methods is that even using faked temperature data, the hypothesis falls apart. Results can't be repeated by others except by using their computer model - which has been demonstrated to give the same results no matter what the input. Scientific method does not operate by concensus. A hypothesis is made, tests are devised to determine if it matches the real world, and if it does, it becomes a theory. It is critical that the data, methods and results can be duplicated by others. None of this holds true with anthropogenic global warming. Conclusion? These people are snake oil salesmen, hoping to shut the sceptical up through peer pressure, funding pressure, and fear of the mob.
  21. Nice WWII 6x6! Thanks for the picture.
  22. Welcome, happy upcoming anniversary, and I'm glad I don't live that close to SMKW. I'd be broke. Also close to camp Coleman, (I collect and restore old lanterns ). I'd suggest keeping a 22 pistol, great for practicing basics cheaply.

    Marlin 1894C

Cody, Sue has an 1892 Winny in .357, stainless... maybe you saw it? She liked it until the pink M1, don't believe she's taken it out of the rack since.
  24. If this passes, my electric bill will be somewhere between double and triple what it is now. S. 1733: Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act Sponsor: Kerry (D - MA) Official Title: A bill to create clean energy jobs, promote energy independence, reduce global warming pollution and transition to a clean energy economy. Status: 9/30/2009: Introduced 9/30/2009: Referred to Senate Environment and Public Works Committee 10/27/2009: Hearing Held by Senate Environment and Public Works Committee 10/28/2009: Hearing Held by Senate Environment and Public Works Committee 10/29/2009: Hearing Held by Senate Environment and Public Works Committee 11/3/2009: Mark up in the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee 11/4/2009: Mark up in the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee 11/5/2009: Amended Senate Environment and Public Works Committee 11/5/2009: Reported to Senate Senate Environment and Public Works Committee 2/2/2010: Reported to Senate Commentary: This bill aims to create green jobs by subsidizing windmill and solar projects. It also restricts emissions of so-called greenhouse gas, mainly carbon dioxide from the combustion of coal, oil, and natural gas. Workers injured by the transition to a regime with new and more rigorous permitting requirements would be entitled to adjustment assistance payments, training, and other benefits. Knowingly making a false statement of a material fact or knowingly failing to disclose a material fact in connection with obtaining an authorized payment under the new benefits program or with an investigation of a petition for benefits are punishable by imprisonment for up to one year, a fine as authorized in Title 18 of the U.S. Code, or both..
  25. Thanks for the link! Just ordered the 'clip' loader for my wife. It will complement her Woodsman nicely. By the way, if you're interested I have a silhouette model buckmark that needs a home.
