  1. I take great exception with anyone that is pro-gun yet doesn't join or contribute to the NRA and TFA (or their local state equivalent). Every serious pro-gun group is going to need to raise lots of money to advertise, lobby, educate, train, donate, and otherwise actively support the many great events, candidates, and law changes (or lack thereof) to further our cause, so I don't mind any of them asking for money often. And any big organization is going to have some admin overhead and inherent inefficiencies, and occasionally a public stance that is unpopular with certain individuals, that's just unavoidable when you scale up. So they might not be perfect, and yes they focus on raising money to grow and further the cause, but they do a HELL of a lot more good than any of us could ever do alone, and there's no other more effective or efficient groups which accomplish the same for less, so I have always supported them and I always will. Now if you still want to throw rocks at them then show me what YOU have done or contributed to that is more effective or efficient, and so far reaching as what they do, and perhaps I'll send you some money too.
  2. Do they have a guest policy? What are their hours?
  3. Just found a state web page which states that SOME of the vanity plates for "clubs" do require membership: http://www.tn.gov/revenue/vehicle/licenseplates/clubsorgs/clubsorgs.shtml So I guess all these years they weren't doing their job to enforce it, but now they are for some strange reason. I am glad to be an NRA Lifetime Benefactor member, and happy to provide proof, but I don't like the state having my credentials or phone number in any database. I will verify this with the NRA just to be sure. I did find it interesting that the funds don't go to the NRA, they go to local trap shoots. That's cool.
  4. Yes, this is what I am worried about. In the same transaction, the clerk asked me for a phone number so they could place it on file with my registration, which I declined. Sounds to me like they are growing a database...
  5. My understanding of vanity plates was that anyone could buy one, regardless of their affiliations, just to support the cause or organization which sponsored the plate. So the pro-life plates, wildlife plates, farming plates, etc never had any burden of proof. This was reinforced when I was able to get and renew my NRA plate for multiple years without any "documentation required", thus I'm wondering why the change. If there are restrictions which impose a burden of membership or proof, I would like to know if that's required by the NRA or the state, and even if this is the case I'd like to know why it was never enforced until now, and what they will do with my credentials on file...
  6. So I got one of the very first NRA license plates for my truck, several years ago back when they were first available for issue. At the time I was on a waiting list of sponsors which was solicited by the NRA, and we were all eventually sent our registration forms in the mail once the plates were ready, so I just went to my local county clerk office to pay the fee and pick it up. I have renewed it annually several times since then, and only had to pay the usual fee, and I got the new sticker as normal. But then today I went to the same clerk to renew it, and this time the lady said that her system prompted her that "documentation was required" before I could renew the plate. When I inquired about what was needed, she asked a coworker to confirm, and they both said that I needed to produce an NRA membership card in order to renew the plate. I don't usually carry my NRA membership card because I have the number memorized and they are never really used for anything, but I did have my NRA Instructor license on me, which I showed her. She proceeded to photocopy it and keep that page for their files, then I was allowed to renew my plate as before. So my questions are: Is this some new requirement by the NRA or TN state? Has anyone else run into this? What are they going to do with the copy of my NRA credentials? What if I refused to show credentials, or was unable to at that time? Would I have been turned down for renewal or forced to revert back to a standard plate?
  7. Is this happening, or dead?
  8. You meant delivery mid February, right? :-) :D
  9. Won't your homeowners, renters, or auto insurance cover the theft of your personal property? I know at least 2 of my policies would. And what about the NRA's free insurance, unless you aren't a member? Ideally you can get a gun back via one of these methods.
  10. I'm not worried about this latest "interpretation". First they approved the pistol braces even if used to fire an AR pistol from the shoulder, then they confirmed the approval several times, and now they are revoking the approval and reversing their opinion based on their own subjective definition of the word "redesign". Their argument is that by simply using an item in a particular manner, you are redesigning it. So applying the same logic, if you drive your car fast then you have "redesigned" it to be a race car. Or if you fend off an attacker with a can of corn, you have "redesigned" the corn into a deadly weapon. So the corn would need to be registered with the BATF as an NFA item before anyone could carry it as a potential defensive item. Idiots. We need a new revolution, to go back to living under the full un-infringed constitution. Until then I'm not afraid of their liberal and politically motivated "interpretations".
  11. I lived in LaVergne from 1998-2001, in Lake Forest on Hollandale Road. Never had any problems with crime or anything else significant, and generally liked the area for what it was: a reasonably quiet cheap place to live with lower housing costs and rental rates than most other areas around it, and with quick access to better places to work, shop and eat such as Mount Juliet, Murfreesboro, Smyrna, Hermitage, etc. Our worst experience there was with all the people that constantly came door to door selling all manner of things, ostensibly for charities or fund raising or small business or schools, but they were always poorly dressed and seemed to be uneducated, appeared to be from bad areas of town, and most of what they were selling was just candy or simple things that you could get at Walmart or the dollar store. They only wanted cash, and when asked for ID or documentation on their cause they could not provide it. Always turned them away but it got old constantly having riff raff walking around your house and pounding on the door despite the No Soliciting sign and chain that we put across the porch entrance. This happened about twice a month, sometimes more. Other than that we enjoyed the area and moved away as soon as we could afford more land and privacy in another area. Our house in LaVergne was maybe worth $125K at the time, 3 bed 2 bath 1200 sq ft with single garage, small lot approximately 100'x 200'. We moved to Arrington but had to pay $210K for 3400 sq ft on 5 acres, so we figured that you get what you pay for,and we enjoyed both locations.
  12. I had a friend who was retired LEO and approved numerous times, then one day a few months later he was inexplicably denied. He called and questioned, wondered and worried, but didn't get any answers until he filed the appeal form. He was subsequently told by the TBI that they "made a mistake" and were sorry, and he was instantly approved. Never told him what their mistake was, but at least they owned up to it.
  13. Good deal. Might want to put that in your first post, and hopefully he'll happen along and see it. Good luck!
  14. I have to say that if I was the buyer I'd be a little reluctant to respond to this type of post. Worst case is the seller wants to obtain and record my personal info or pass it on to other parties, or maybe has seller's remorse and wants it back, or maybe the feds have come to talk with him and he's dragging me into it, etc etc. Best case is that maybe the seller found a box, booklet, or some other little thing and wants to pass it along. Not sure why you are trying to find the buyer, but if it's for an innocent or positive scenario I'd suggest that you explain that in your original post, otherwise it looks pretty suspicious and isn't likely to motivate the buyer to jump up and respond for an unknown and potentially bad outcome.
  15. I assume that the officer got killed, and that's a terrible shame. The video is completely useless as presented IMHO, as it only contains about 0.25 seconds of a fast and blurry incomplete action, not showing any outcome or the resulting follow up, and no introduction or narration to explain the context or broader circumstances of the situation. If the idea was to warn people or train LEO about the dangers of potentially armed suspects and the importance of proper search and detention, it would have been much more effective to show the entire action and provide an introduction and conclusion with background info for context. As it is, I felt that I just wasted 13.5 minutes of my life, and I didn't learn anything new.
  16. I use Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish. Sold in small metal can in Walmart automotive section. But be careful polishing, it's easy to ruin a gun finish by taking off too much or doing more harm than good with dirty rags, tainted polish medium, too much or uneven pressure etc etc
  17. I can't believe this thread is this long, with so many different opinions and suggestions. It doesn't matter if you like/dislike weed, use/don't use weed, favor/oppose legalizing weed, or favor/oppose giving consent to search. All that matters, with respect to the OP's original question, is that weed is illegal nearly everywhere, and possession/use of weed while also in possession of a firearm is a major criminal offense regardless of whether or not you have a gun permit. So traveling with or being in close proximity to others that possess/use weed puts you at significant risk of major criminal charges or other legal / civil trouble. You can try to rationalize it or minimize it all you want, but the risk remains high. So many things can (and often do) go wrong in these scenarios. Someone else stashes weed in your luggage or gear boxes, attempts to hide it under the seat or near you in the vehicle, drops it on the ground near you, gets residue on your clothing, places paraphernalia in your proximity, lies to the police about you being a user/dealer, etc. etc. etc. And then there's even worse scenarios where your gun is seen or detected after drugs are discovered or PC exists, and before you have a chance to explain, in which case things can go south very fast. Or you are involved in a shooting and it comes out in court that you were knowingly associating with drug users at the time, possibly even using or in proximity to the use and sale, and things get really bad for you. So you need to decide which is more important: your safety and freedom (in which case you carry everywhere and avoid being around drug users), or your desire to play music with and associate with drug users (in which case you should leave your gun at home and/or be prepared for legal / criminal / civil trouble).
  18. I have a Tundra with 6.5' bed. I did literally hundreds of hours of research on covers and inspected nearly every type and brand out there. I eventually settled on the BAKFLIP and it was by far the best decision I ever made. I have since installed the same cover on 3 different trucks, all work excellent. My favorite features include: Easily installs in about 60 minutes without drilling or permanently modifying your truck. Hard cover locks closed for security, and you can sit on the folded portion or set gear on top of it. Watertight, has built in concealed drain rails to catch any leaks and keep the water out of your bed. Can flip open 1, 2, 3, or 4 sections at a time and ride at highway speed in any of these conditions. Can be removed and replaced by a single person in less than 5 minutes without tools. Holds up well over time, and still looks like new after 7 years in the hot southern summer sun, ice cold northern winter snow, and many tornado rain storms. When folded all the way open (4 sections) it will block part of your rear window view, but you can still see out of your rear view mirror along the top edge, and this doesn't matter to me because if I ever have it all the way open I'm usually hauling large freight that would block my rear window view anyway. If I ever needed it to be completely open without partially blocking the rear window view, I would just remove it which is easily done by hand and no tools in 2 minutes, but in all my years of hauling and driving over 200,000 miles I've never needed to do this.
  19. Spent with family and friends, good beer, big outdoor fire, food and poker game inside, fire truck siren and train horns for noise when needed. Just got done, heading to bed with the loyal but spoiled rotten dog at my feet.
  20. Opened my TGO SS presents this morning. Not one or two but 3 nice knives, including a great Buck skinner that will be processing deer in a few days, and a Kershaw which will be opening some brews later today. Many thanks to my secret TGO sender.
  21. Welcome from a fellow Lebanon member. You should visit Bend of The River shooting range near Cookeville. It's about 45 minutes drive but worth it, nice place with skeet, trap, rifle, pistol and a small store. It's worth the drive.
  22. Lots of great presents in this thread. Santa is indeed wonderfully pro-gun and generous. :-) I acquired some new firearms earlier in the year, so I'm taking it easy on Santa this year. I'm only asking for 2 gifts from the fat man, both being delivered this week... Qty = 6 brand new Glock 21 Gen 4 pistols (.45 ACP) with night sights, extra mags, and a laser-etched gold state police badge on the slide. Obtained directly from the agency with a few extras. It's good to have connections. :D And a mint condition original factory Williams High Speed pinball machine, my favorite from the golden age of pinball. http://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=1176 I'm super stoked with the gifts above, but they pale in comparison to the best gifts of all: I thank God that I was born healthy in a free pro-gun country to a loving family and raised in a Christian faith, so I learned just how lucky and blessed that I am in comparison to so many others that are ill, oppressed, defenseless, alone, without religion, or otherwise suffering in the world. The fact that God has allowed me to receive so many other gifts in addition to these core blessings is almost inexplicable, thus I plan to use every single item and resource at my disposal to share and help others as much as possible, and I view every single day as yet another gift and a new chance to make a difference with someone in some way.
  23. I got my SS package a few days ago (from a TGO member in Manchester), but am saving it until Christmas day to open then. It was sent early via priority mail, a very nice gesture. Can hardly wait to see what it is.
  24. Every time I check TGO late at night it ends up costing me money. This is a good deal, though, as long as they are same quality as US military surplus. I recently offered $8 per can to a gun show dealer for a large lot of used dented cans, and he turned me down,he wanted $9 per can. Glad I waited.
