Funny enough, that "Cheap" gun really is a cheap gun. It's a Savage FV-SR in a Boyds stock that I finished and put in the cheek riser. I found the unfinished stock on sale for something like $80 so I just made it my own so to speak. You can put this gun together for less around $450 now and add a scope. I have a buddy that just bought one and ordered a Boyds At-One stock to put it in. It makes a nice combination. That being said, it's a Savage which means two things. One, it will probably be pretty accurate, but two it is an unrefined, ugly action. The trigger will be decent for what it is. I love CZ's, but wouldn't pay that kind of money for any 457. They made some improvements to them, but they are now also single lug actions. I think a 452/453 is a better choice, but harder to find. For the 1k price, I would probably be looking for a nice condition older Anschutz. Even a 64 action (vs the better 54) will still shoot great. You can find something like a 64 MPR which is a nice mix between sporter and BR that will work well off a bag. A 1416 D HB would be a good sporter type rifle. Fit and finish will be way better than either CZ or Savage. They can both be found used for about a 20% discount. Champions Choice in Lavergne has them both new if you want to just buy one new. Nice thing is you could go look at them and see if one has better would than another. They are closed right now because of COVID, but I would think they will be open soon. Downside is you would have to pay tax. For reference, each is linked below. http://champchoice.com/store/Main.aspx?p=ItemDetailOptions&item=009980 http://champchoice.com/store/Main.aspx?p=ItemDetailOptions&item=009977 Here is a 1416 for sale of RFC. I would want to see some more pictures, but gives you an idea of what they go for used. https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/vbclassified.php?do=ad&id=250613

Maybe another way of looking at it: Custom BR Gun: Custom NRL22 Gun: Cheap NRL22 Gun Is there a big difference in the two NRL22 guns. Yes and no. The custom gun is definitely better, but is it as much better than the cost....debatable unless you are pretty serious. If you are the type that naturally is inquisitive about chambering specs/dimensions, firing pin fall, etc, then the custom route may be to your liking.

I am one of those dudes . I run another Rimfire Benchrest forum and know pretty well most of the guys on RFC. So that's the challenge, competition covers a broad spectrum. If BR is the type of competition you would want to do, the guns don't lend themselves to plinking as I think of it as they aren't made to carry around. On the other side, a gun that is good to carry around isn't good for any real BR. Now if we are talking NRL22 type of competition (shooting at ranges from 30-150 yards at various targets) then you can definitely find something to work. Then you get into factory vs custom and when custom starts to come into play you are looking at quite a bit more money. The type of scopes you would use are also vastly different. You would want a fairly high magnification (36-55x on the high end) 2nd plane scope for BR work and something in a FFP 4-30 range for NRL22. If target shooting to hit small dots is fun for you, BR is probably more to your liking. If hitting targets in the 1-4" range at differing distances is more fun for you, then NRL22 is probably more fun. All of them can be very expensive if you do them seriously. Ammo is expensive and you can't just use $5/ box ammo. If you can let us know what style of shooting seems to be closer to what you are thinking, we can probably give better details on possible rifles to consider.

So first question do you just want to shoot off of a bench or are you thinking you may like "Benchrest" shooting. Big difference between them. I am about as deep down the custom 22 rabbit hole as one can go and would be glad to discuss real details with you about what may work for what you want. Also, are you looking to travel to some matches, or is this just informal plinking where you want a really nice gun, but aren't really interested in competition? Lots of variables that would lead me to give you different recommendations. In the BR world, 2k is not a lot for a gun, let alone a gun and scope, but it could be done. If you think you want to shoot something more like NRL22, then that's a different discussion, but there also expensive guns in that realm too. I have them all and will try to help you get what you actually need. Glad to have a call with you if you want as well.

Yep, they make good stuff. If you ever need a good set of drivers, this set is nice. As you say, not cheap, but worth it. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000T9XUI6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

No, forgot about it to be honest. I have it laying around and will try to take some video.

I don't automatically assume your friend can't do it, but I would have to know how much he has done it. My best friend and I aren't professional tree arborists, but I am confident I can take down any tree I would need to myself (with help of course). A lot depends on what equipment he has available. Lots of country boys could do it in their sleep, but there are plenty who I also wouldn't let near one. Depends on the person. Then again, if you aren't sure yourself how to do it, I suspect you may not be a good judge of if they can do it. That being said, I don't think he knows enough about it simply based on the idea he thinks he will sell it to a mill. Not going to happen most likely and anyone who knows much about it probably wouldn't have even brought it up.

While maybe not as aesthetic, you could also consider building the room on the outside of the shop with an internal entry door opening into the room like mentioned. Put up stickers to screw to and panel it to match the building and I don't think it would look bad. You could put a small single angle roof over it to make it look like it goes. Wouldn't take a lot more work or money in the grand scheme of things. You could go a little bigger and not take up space in your shop. That 36 sf is quite a bit when you start removing it from usable space inside. I know it would bug me every time I need a little extra room for something. -

Looks like you have a tractor. The room wouldn't need to be that big. I would consider pouring a concrete pad and lifting it over the room. Even if you had to do it in two pieces. I would use some pipe to create a vent out the top to the outside for fresh air. A 6x6 room would be plenty of size for a few people in a worst case scenario. -
It's basically an exact 10/22 clone. I have one and it's about what you would expect for the price. Not the most accurate gun ever. I put in better internal parts and am going to thread to receiver and install a custom barrel like I do for my competition guns just for something to do. If I wanted a stock 10/22, I would probably just go with a Ruger.

Those old Winchester slide actions are cool rifles. I don't have one, but if I run across the right one some day, I will have at least one.

The other thread about 22lr suggestions got me thinking about how each of us probably tend to gravitate to one caliber or type of rifle/pistol. For me, that is 22's. I love 22's of all sorts. I am pretty well versed in 22's and have a lot of them including many competition guns (I shoot 22lr Benchrest), but I got to thinking about what got me started to really love them. We don't have a lot of 22 threads on here, but I thought it would be cool (at least for me) to see what others consider to be their favorite personally owned 22 pistol and/or rifle and why. I am sure for some it will be a handed down rifle from their parent or grandparent. For others it may just be an era of guns, or it could be the only one you have. I am always looking to learn more about different 22's so also hoping maybe I will see something that intrigues me that I didn't know about. It doesn't need to be expensive or rare, just loved by you. Let's limit it to one rifle and pistol per person. Can be hard for those with many, but there is always that one that means just a bit more. I'll start. Rifle: Winchester Model 52D with 14x Unertl When I first got into 22's a buddy of mine had a 52C that I shot and I fell in love. Many years later I own a few, but this probably my favorite. This is what got me started into thinking about shooting Benchrest and started me down the rabbit hole. I just had it out a few days ago shooting targets. It's still impressive to how well these old guns shoot. Pistol: Browning Medalist As you can probably see, I lean towards old classics. I actually bought this gun on here from a fellow member. I love older target pistols like 41's, Hi Standard's, and of course this Browning. Something about these that once I saw one I had to have one. The grips are amazing and it is just plain fun to shoot. This is a shooter grade, but a pistol I smile at every time I get it out and shoot. I hope some find this thread enjoyable. I know most are more tactical oriented on here.

Agree. This one https://www.budsgunshop.com/product_info.php/products_id/71899 for $200 is great, but it really needs a new stock. The Savage plastic stocks are terrible and that's being nice. For the money, you can get a nice Boyds in the flavor you want and still be under $400. I have this exact model and it does shoot well.

Yeah, 22's may have as large of range of not only type, but cost as any caliber out there. This is my latest. A bit overkill for most I personally would also recommend a CZ as the best quality/fit/finish to cost 22. It's the only current production rifle under $500 I think one could realistically think of as something to pass down if that is something to consider. Most of the modern manufacturers (Savage, Marlin, CZ) will be fairly decent (1 MOA or less) in the accuracy dept. Ruger can be hit or miss ( They all can, but I think you have better odds with CZ and Savage). There are lots of options. I would pick the one that calls out to me in the price range I wanted to spend and not worry too much. For plinking, any of them will do fine.

There is no such thing as transferring as a “receiver”. It is either pistol, rifle or other. I always transfer as other so it doesn’t matter which one you do first.

I go out as needed to get things. I will go to HD or Lowes once or twice a week as I am working on finishing out my shop and need some things to continue. I'm not waiting a month to get some screws or things I need to make progress while sitting at home. I go in, get what I need, and leave avoiding as much interaction as possible. I will also go through a drive through to get food. My closest neighbors are about 1/4 mile away so not worried about being out and about on my own land. I am cautious, but not reckless.

I have a Rockchucker as well, but it's not as nice to use as the Co-Ax. Simply put, I can change between dies in a Co-Ax in a few seconds and once they are set, they are set. It may seems like a small issue, but I hardly ever use my Rockchucker or Lyman Single stage presses anymore. Not saying they aren't good presses, just ease of use and switching between things is easier on the Co-Ax. It can also be argued the Co-Ax has an advantage on accuracy due to design. That may not mean much to most, but it is a factor. I think if you ask people who have had both, nearly 100 percent would pick the Co-Ax if they had to choose one. Basically all of them will last forever, so don't see where that is the major issue. -

Suppressing 10.5” 5.56
Hozzie replied to maroonandwhite's topic in National Firearms Act (NFA) Regulated
If it is already overgassed, I think you may have issues. Being that it is a 30 cal can on a 5.56 it will have a bit less pressure, but probably not enough to not cause issues. You will get a lot of blowback I would guess. I don't think you will hurt anything trying it though and see if it is tolerable. Or get something like a flaming pig to push the blast forward more. -
One things for sure, even if the world wasn't going to end, people are hell bent on talking it into existence. Go outside and get some fresh air. People need to put down their phones and computers and focus on something other than doom and gloom. I would love to see a 14 day internet ban so people can stop being crazed idiots.

I was watching the Kilcher's (whatever the show is called) this week and their son made one out of a pump sprayer. Just cut the end off of the hose and use the pumper. It was in an outhouse so the hose was just fixed to spray up out of the box. Pretty funny.

I saw a guy yesterday while I was getting groceries at Kroger (normal shopping not panic) that literally had to have had 100 rolls of toilet paper. He looked at me and said "that's the only thing I need". I told him if you need that much, you have something majorly wrong. If I had thought of it I would have said, if there is any Karma you will need to use every single sheet of that this week. As he was buying the cheapest crap they make, he wouldn't have been able to sit down anyway if he had to use all of it. I don't do well with idiots.

I literally just book a flight for the end of the month today. Curious to see how the airlines handle this.
