I agree. Wood grading has went dowhill for sure.

Love me some Coopers. I had a JSR with AAA wood that I foolishly sold to my buddy. I would love to see a pic of the custom classic. I have been threating to buy a western classic for years and just haven't done it.

That's about normal for CCI 100 round boxes. Not terribly inflated. -
Wolf extra match 22lr available at champs
Hozzie replied to Protongunner's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I am probably not the best one to ask quite honestly. I have a bit different view on 22 ammo as I shoot competitively and have a lot of 22 ammo (no, none of it is for sale). I bought 4 cases of Lapua in December, but that was through the Lapua Test Center where the ammo is reserved only for those that test. It's true that even the test centers are lower on inventory than they normally are. I am not trying to be mean to anyone, but if you have 22 rifles or pistols and don't have any ammo I can't for the life of me imagine how that happens with the pricing and availability we have had for the last few years. If I was just trying to add to my inventory I would wait. No way I would pay these prices unless I had zero and a real need for it. I just wouldn't shoot until it comes back down and more availability is there. It will come back. I can appreciate you sharing the availability so not trying to be negative, I guess I just can't get over anyone paying what they are asking for any of this low end ammo. We all do what we have to do, so I get it if that is someone's only option I suppose. -

That's ludicrous for Wolf Match Extra. I guess if you have none maybe, but I would have to be pretty desperate. -
It was rusted some towards the receiver but got better as it went out farther. So far things are cleaning up decent. It is a bit of a change of expectations as I am pretty picky with my guns. This thing has led a well used life and it shows. It isn't going to be perfect and I have to get it in my mind that is ok.

I got it out using something similar, but I will probably make a slug on the lathe to fix some dents as you mention. I decided not to take the barrel off as I think it is probably rusted on and not worth the risk of breaking something. The bore seem to be pretty rough, but it will be fine to shoot what I want to. I'll update as I go along. I go through motivational spells so it could be done this week or 6 months from now

Yeah, plenty of kroil being used. I think the feed tube is probably rusted to the receiver and/or the front dovetailed support. I heated them a bit and added more kroil and will let it sit for a few hours. It may take days to get it apart. No good way I can see to grasp the feed tube without destroying it.
-
Thanks Red. That one was better than the other I had looked. I basically have done all of that, but the tube is basically stuck. I will work out a way to loosen it. Just haven't figure it out yet. It hasn't been apart in so long that things are pretty gummed up and hard to separate.

Well, since we can't act like children anymore I figured I might as well delve into something that I have been wanting to do for a while. My dad was given this rifle in the mid 80's by his great uncle. I don't really know where he got it, but would like to think it has been in the family a long time. It has been sitting in a safe since then and I decided it was time to get it out and shoot it. I ordered brass, bullets, and dies and am ready to load up some rounds (32 wcf). I figured it would be prudent to probably give it a good work through before starting so I decided tonight was the night to start disassembly. From the looks of it, this thing potentially hasn't been apart for probably 100 years. The amount of dirt and grime in it is just amazing. Makes one wonder where it has been and what it has seen. It was clearly used and used a lot which I kind of like. That's what guns are for. I am not really into old guns, but it does make a difference when you know it has been in the family. Got a lot of it apart, but I can't get the forearm off. Debating how to do it. It wont move forward far enough to clear the receiver so it will drop down. It's hitting the dovetailed piece where the metal forecap screws in. It's amazing how tight of tolerance these things had. I suspect it was tight to start and may have swelled a bit over time. Anyway, wasn't in the mood to start getting too aggressive with it just yet. Will probably have to remove a bit of wood from the inside of the forearm to clear the forecap connector. I won't be doing any major restoration and ruin what value it does have, but man does it need a cleaning. Hopefully next time I post it looks like a complete rifle again. Thought some of you may enjoy one of the truly classic old guns.

I was going to say something not so nice, but my better senses have kicked in. I would like to say that I am at least glad some of you have got it, but I’m not. For those of us paying for all of this and getting Zero, my condolences.

I think he may be referring to working for ATT??? It's the only think I can think of that would make sense of the statement.

To be fair, we do it everywhere as well. We tell everywhere else what they need to be doing. I care about as much what they think as they do what I think. Of course some are going to think it’s great. So be it. I quit worrying about what others think a long time. Only those looking for validation will give two craps what China thinks.

Congrats. I am still trying to figure out what I want to do for a hunt. I can imagine that mile trek was a challenge unto itself. I need to start training now

Done, Glad to help. Happy Thanksgiving. -
Thanks. I may give them a call depending what my buddy finds out.

Thanks Rob. If 10-12k is what it takes I am not against that. At the end of the day it will take what it takes. I will start checking out the preference points and see what it takes. I/we (my buddy and I) may have an in with a hunt in New Mexico with an outfitter my buddy has used to go to Africa twice. I didn't give that much thought when I posted before and didn't realize he also does hunts all over the US. My buddy has a call into him so we'll see what that brings. Basically, we have been talking about doing some kind of hunt here for 5 years. I am tired of the talk and we can both afford it so it's time to just do it. Like anything, I want a Mercedes at a Chevy price . I appreciate great feedback. I am all about reality. Jamie

Excellent. Good luck, get a big one.

I know we have quite a few guys here who do a lot of hunting around various places. I want to book an Elk hunt for next year in Colorado or one of the surrounding areas. I am looking for recommendations for an outfitter that you know or have used or have someone you know well who has used it. My main goals: 1) I am not looking to rough it. No backcountry horse rides, etc. It doesn't have to be fancy, but it does need to be comfortable. This doesn't mean shooting from an ATV or anything like that. Some long distance trekking is ok, but I want to sleep in a real bed at night. 2) A real chance for a quality, large elk. I want it to be fair chase, so nothing stocked, etc. I am not looking for guarantees, but would like to know there is a track record of nice elk. 3) I am willing to pay a fair amount. I would be ok with $5-7k all in. I am sure there is a large range of options available and if it took a little more, I am open to that. I will have a buddy go as well, so a 2-1 guide is ok. Anyone have any decent recommendations/leads I can look into? Thanks, Jamie

I have a lot of deer around and aren't far from you, but you don't see that many at once very often.

Thanks, for me it's not so much substantial as solid. I don't like flex.

I got out of 300 BLK in the AR platform, but have considered getting one in a bolt gun for subsonic loads. How is the stock on the Ruger? I am usually not a big fan of their stability in similar style stocks on some of their other guns. I would rather put more money into a different gun than having to replace a stock on a new one.

Sounds good. Glad you got it figured out.

That's the issue, you never know what it was designed in to start with after the conversion. Maybe print it out and give me some measurements to confirm. It is really easy for me to do an internal thread. I may do both just to try it and see how it goes. It may be a couple of days before I get to it, but I will do it. Lots going on at work right now.
