The new (old) Moisin Nagant the Rabbi sold me
Rightwinger replied to Rightwinger's topic in Long Guns
Just got back from Wallys World and they didn't have Dads varnish stripper at mine, but they did have Kleen Stripper so I have that, Provincial (med brown) stain and clear kote in semi-satin so that project will probably start tomorrow. Rabbi, no problem. You were trying to get out of there and I didn't care for another box. Besides, I like driving around East Nashville with a long gun riding shotgun! Could you check if you have a smaller box that the pig sticker and other items (I assume the russki cleaning kit?) will fit in and let me know? If so I'll just bungee them to the bike and swing by tomorrow as I get off mid afternoon on Mondays. If not, I guess we wait till the next set of Thunderstorms so I will be in the truck. -
He probably had an opinion!

The new (old) Moisin Nagant the Rabbi sold me
Rightwinger replied to Rightwinger's topic in Long Guns
Oh, can anyone tell me what Mike was asking about? What Armory is it from? The pics are not detailed as much so tell me what to look for and I'll post it or take more in sunlight where I can get some detail. Any links to good sites with take down info, diagrams, etc? I'll be taking it apart fully to do the re-finish work. -
The new (old) Moisin Nagant the Rabbi sold me
Rightwinger replied to Rightwinger's topic in Long Guns
That sounds like the ticket then. I have to hit Wally World tomorrow anyway so I'll pick some of that up. Where did you get the stain? WM as well? I'll look around. All the refinishing I have done previously was either to low quality stocks (for the Ruger 10/22, New England Arms 20 gauge shottys for the boys) or to new semi finished stocks I have on my Savage 110 and Weatherby .340. I used Tru-Oil on all and love the look. Darker wouldn't scare me with this one though as I was handling my brothers M1 and it looks great in dark colors. He liked the Moisin as well so he may have to give the Rabbi a call as well. Guess I have switched over from AR building to collecting the old ones now. -
Now you guys that already know them well tell me about these rifles. I have some pics that are not very good as I can't use the wifes camera worth a crap and mine is down till I find the card reader again. Rifling is pristine! Stock looks good. I originally thought I might sand and refinish it but would lose the stampings in the stock if I do. If you guys tell me they aren't of much value to tracking the rifle then I may go ahead and refinish anyway. Bolt looks to me like its a replacement since I didn't think the Russkis did stainless but it looks nice. Anyway, you all fill me in on what to look for in the Moisin's (Mike.357 here's your invite to expound!)

If you are into automotive design at all you HAVE to see this!!
Rightwinger replied to musicman's topic in General Chat
Another you all might want to look at is the Mercedes SLC600. Google it and look at the slide shows! No steering wheel, no pedals. Joystick driven. Apparently the concept was floated a few years back but modern "young" drivers are probably more adept with a joystick than a peddle and wheel when they are first learning to drive. Interesting and probably always out of my price range but its the future. I like that if you can get a left handed person to ride, you can swap driving duty by saying "here, take over"! -
Need High Def antenna info, might dump the satellite
Rightwinger replied to Rightwinger's topic in General Chat
I'll probably try building an antenna first. Thanks for all the responses. Have not called customer service. I'm thinking you folks that got to see it all are probably already on HD receivers??? Talked to my brother who also has directtv and got the same pre-empt to a DirecTV logo. Apparently it was local to the Nashville area. I'm still on non HD satellite. -
Probably the factory recoil spring. It might even be wearing against that plastic factory guide rod. Go here: http://www.topglock.com/catalog/recoil.htm Get these: 42280Captive guide rod for models 19-23-25-32$20.96 42297ISMI flat wire recoil spring 18 pounds for models 19-23-25-32$7.95

So what happend for Wensike, what ever Jr's young driver's name is, in the last 12? I think Mike Bliss and Ruetemann were both pulling him in before the caution. No replies yet on the other thread. If I can't get HD over the air then there is not much sense in dropping the Satellite yet.

Bad memories there.... Airborne units initiate their new members into the brotherhood of the "Prop Blast" in many ways. I got it twice moving from one unit to another. The engineer unit I joined had a mock up C-130 door to do mock exits from. They mounted metal plates to either side of the door so when we were commanded to "STAND IN THE DOOR", which meant you put hands outside the plane, set up in a good ready position to pull with your hands and push out with your feet. One joker is sitting in the audience cranking away on the old TA-312 field phone with the wires going to either metal plate. So your there getting your ass fired up with the juice while the other players are yelling commands at you. All in good fun since you got to eat and drink well afterwards. Awww the memories. And I did it all for God and Country and 110.00 dollars extra a month jump pay. Sigh

Police serving warrants in the middle of the night
Rightwinger replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
You done just fine! Maybe schools should teach some of the reality of living with the rule of law as part of "social studies". That way we could clean things up a bit quicker. Judge: Mr. Perp are you a high school graduate Perp: Yeah Judge: So you were made aware of your rights granted by the constitution as well as commission of acts that violate others rights is a crime. Perp: Well I didn't know it meant that and (insert common excuse for race, location, financial status, etc).... Judge: Guilty. Sentence is 11 months, 29 days of incarceration to include daily community service between the hours of 8-5 and two hours of Societal Education from 7-9 Monday thru Saturday evenings. Sunday may be considered a day of rest and but you will be allowed to attend a religous service (non denominational) should you wish to. -

Well like you know, language is hard to learn, you know. I think, you know, it needs to be taught, you know, how we use it and like you know, easier.....you know. I love watching an atlhlete try to speak on camera. If its not a prepared statement you can make a game of it. Every time someone says "you know" as filler, you have to take a swig of beer or a shot or something....you know! We used to do that in college with the Bob Newhart show. Every time someone said "Hi Bob" we had to drink. Usually good for a major buzz in the 30 minute time frame and then we started drinking for real! (College, fraternity, ROTC = Billions of Brain cells I didn't need anyway gone!)

Im pissed at Direct TV right now. With 12 laps to go they cut to a Direct TV logo on the race today. I don't know if it was Direct or ESPN2 or what and do not really care. Its also been spotty in reception of late giving me the old "searching for satellite signal" on certain channels in perfectly clear weather. I have one HD capable TV that I have just been using in the standard format waiting for next year. I live about 50 miles from Nashville as the crow flies and wonder if anyone else is grabbing HD signals that far out and which antennna your using. By the way, as I started to write this, the race came on just in time to let me watch the winner climb out of his car and get the guitar....way to go DirectTV. Experts on HD chime in. I do not have a good cable option yet as where I live there is only analog cable from a local telephone cooperative and from Comcast. Neither has any plan to go to digital and if I was going to go with cable I would want digital for the internet connection.

What the crap! I guess I should have driven over and got the damn tickets but chose to sit at home in the AC and watch it....decent race until 12 laps left, they have a caution for a spin, its setting up to be a sprint to the end between three drivers...and direct TV or ESPN pulls the plug! I get a Direct TV logo and crappy music. They were going to cut to some Indy car racing but its not there either. What goes on with these networks and their thinking? I am seriously thinking about getting the HD antenna and dumping the satellite altogether. Can anyone out there tell me if they are getting decent signal for HD in the 50 plus mile range from Nashville? I know I have to get the "good" or big antenna but back in the day before I had satellite, I actually could only get channel 4 from Nashville and a station out of Bowling Green KY better than anything else. Any HD experts want to help. In fact I'll start a thread to stop the hijack going on here.

Very true! If you can afford one, own one I always say! They have a newer caliber they developed as well (the son says he worked it up anyway) in .416 that reaches out there as well. Saw it on Future Weapons and the bald guy loved it! They just have not made it on the semi automatic frame yet (or haven't advertised it on the website yet)

Not here. If you collect any data or any kind for the purpose of transferring that information you must be licensed. There is no difference in a surveillance tech, an investigator, a data miner, a skip tracer, etc. If you work for an attorney as a investigator you must be licensed as a private investigator. I have been to the commission meetings. They have tried every way in the book to get around paying the fees and the commission is death on those folks. They actually have to work harder at getting around the couple of hundred bucks to get licensed then risk never being allowed to get a license AFTER they pay the civil penalties the commission can and DOES levy against them for doing unlicensed work.

I'm just wondering if you missed Joe at Hero Gears recent post?? http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8547 I haven't shot the Barrett but have plugged away quite a bit on an Armalite AR50. Unless your going into competitive shooting or a combat zone, get Joe's Bushy or an AR50 and save some dough for the ammo!

Thats why reloading is so great for off caliber and the belted magnums. Every rifle has little differences that effect the bullets going down their bores. Put two .257 mags, side by side and bolted down bore sighted at the same target and start putting rounds through them. How tight the bore is, where the bullet starts to touch the free bore or lands and grooves, burrs in the barrel, to many to list just in the rifles. Add to that a few grains difference in powder, variations in bullet shape from the manufacturing process, dings from shipping and loading in the rifle, crimp....add it all up and you will see wide variations of the same two rifles using even the same lot of factory ammo. What you want to do is start to eliminate the variables. When you reload your using one die. Same lot of powder, same measureing units and hopefully your getting it to .0x each time on the measure. You start to get everything to be the same and adjust your scope to meet it. Once your there the differences are things you either can never control, temperature and wind, and your shooting techique, flinching, pulling, etc. Sorry for the long winded post. Reload to remove the variables is what I was trying to say. Then you will find that sweet spot with a certain bullet and powder that will make you buy it in bulk!

I wouldn't worry about the "entry" level thing. Rolex, Porsche and Dell all make entry level models of their products but they the entry level there is still better than your Timex, Ford and E machines that kind of do the same things....... I have a Vanguard, courtesy of Kahrman to go along with the Mark V and both shoot very nicely. You won't be dissappointed either way.
-
I own a Vanguard in .300 Wby Mag and a Mark V in .340 Wby Mag. Go ahead and plunk down on the Mark V or better yet the accu mark if you can. The Vanguard is their entry level rifle yet of much higher quality than the standard big names. You get the nine lug locking bolt with the Mark V and even better tolerances than with the Vanguards if you choose the accu marks. I have never shot the .257 but i do like the ballistics on that caliber. If you reload, you can save some big dough after throwing down on a couple of boxes of factory. I think Reloaders Bench in Mt. Juliet has some factory brass for the .257 on the shelf right now. In a nutshell, I love the Weatherby product and as time and money allows I will continue to collect them in different calibers. .270 or .257 are probably next since I got the upper end of magnums pretty well covered.(thanks for making me look at that one again!)
