  1. I really enjoy shooting all guns, but probably my favorite thing to shoot would be shotguns. To me, the sweetest thing I have shot was a Ruger Red Label 28ga. I know it does not sound very exciting, but it was really a joy to shoot.
  2. I was taught proper gun handling and safety rules, and I have always practiced them. The thought of having a "accident" and killing somebody scares the hell out of me. With that said, when I first started hunting, I was using a rifle a friend had, and it did discharge in the mannor described by the complaints. I cannot tell you for sure what the make and model it was, but I do not think it was a 700. Either way, it was pointed into the ground, per safety rules, when I tried to unload it. This model had to be in the fire position to work the action. The safety was very stiff, but when it did disengage, it sent a 30-06 round in the ground about 6 inches from my foot. I had never heard of this happening, so I was doubting myself even though I was nearly positive I had not touched the trigger. I was telling another friend about it, and he said he had had a rifle do the same thing. I described the safety and action and everything, and he said it sounded like it was the same model he had. I think the 700 is a fine rifle, but I also know anything mechanical can and does from time to time malfunction. We trust guns with our lives and the safety of others, so it is un-nerving to thinking such things can happen. However, based on my experience and because of the gravity of the trust we place in these mechanical items, I believe it would be irresponsible to quickly write it off as user error.
  3. I do not know the size of your lady friend, but one avenue you might wish to consider is youth guns. I bought a youth model 870 20ga for my girlfriend to shoot clays with, it fits her well, and the recoil is managable for her out of a 20. With that said, that is just another option for you all the think about, but yes, she should pick out her own.
  4. Ruger customer service is great to deal with, and they should fix you right up. You will probably have to send it to them, but they will pay for it both ways.
  5. I had a 500 and it just felt sloppy to me. It seemed like the action was loose and did not feel solid in my hand. Since having the 500, I have three 870s and am very happy with all of them. Which ever way you decide to go, make sure you get ahold of each of them and just see how they feel in your hands. That said, I am an 870 fan and will never bring myself to pay the retail price on a 500.
  6. Ask your insurance agent what will happen to your rates with a ticket on your record. If you choose to fight it, be prepared to get bent over the table. I fought one in Knoxville and had to pay the fine, court cost, and like 20hrs of community service. The judge wanted me to go to driving school, but I could not with my work schedule. It cost me right at $200 dollars. If I would have gone to driving school, it would have been another $65. Good luck with it.
  7. That is a great find. I will be passing this along.
  8. I wonder if I can hold out long enough for the 40c to come out. Decisions decisions
  9. I too had Mathis as a teacher, and I can tell you from that experience, the only way he will ever listen to anyone on this issue is if you have nice love bumps in your chest.
  10. Thank you all for the comments. Looks like I will be getting a set.
  11. I'd throw it in the trash either way. No proof that you got it, and no proof that you were driving even if it actually was your vehicle. All those private companies collecting fines is a bunch of crap. It is nice to know they were reasonable about it.
  12. Riiiiiiiiiiing Riiiiiiiiiiing Riiiiiiiiiiing Riiiiiiiiiiing
  13. I have a Taurus 856 that I have been thinking about putting a spring kit in. Does anyone have any experience with this? I understand some other models can be problematic with the Wolff kit, but things seem okay with the 85. Just wanted to know if you all have tried them.
  14. The tax on firearms is just sales tax, correct?
  15. There is an ammo tax on top of your sales tax. From the comments, it seems like that might not be known.
  16. I'm just a peckerwood who lives in the hills with too many guns. - Shooter
  17. If you used a different mag, would it be flush with the end of the grip?
  18. I have a few Kershaws and really like them. For the money, I think they are a great knife. I am sure there are better knives to be had for more money, but I tend to loose pocket knives from time to time. The Kershaws I have are the onion series like chive, leek, etc. I cannot remember the names exactly.
  19. Not too much I hate worse than a damned thief.
  20. Most any army/navy store should have it. I do not recall one right off hand in Knoxville, but surely there is one around somewhere. edit: Kegger beat me to it
  21. You suck, got me all excited over nothing.
  22. It seems like a bunch of folks are getting their feathers ruffled over this. I am not saying who is right or wrong, but according to the second story, he did not point the gun at anyone. It says he "brandished" the gun, and one of the protesters called the cops. Riddle me this, if there is an anti who has an issue with something you do to make a living, and they see you pull a gun from the glovebox of your vehicle and put it one your hip. Do you think they might twist that into something threating and that they might say that you brandished the weapon? Bottom line is this sounds like it could be an interesting story either way, but to flame the Dr. or protestors either one is jumping to conclusions about something that, frankly, we know almost nothing about.
  23. Keep the springer, just buy some extra mags. They are the same caliber, which is the only thing I would worry about. You would not trade shoes so you can wear the same color sox all the time.
  24. I guess I find it more disturbing that he thinks it is funny and his comments about it. To me, that demonstrates gross disrespect for the animal. I hunt, and I do not mind killing stuff. However, he seems to gather some kind of sick pleasure in killing the deer in perhaps a unique or unconventional way. Bottom line, this guy is a dik. You should tell him so, or at least show him this thread.

I looked when I was there a couple of weeks ago and did not see any signs. By the way, that is a great exhibit. You might want to take a little flash light with you; some of the walking paths are a bit dark. I felt drunk trying to walk on some of it.
