Make sure you go play with them all before you buy one. I have had a 500 and did not care for it. I did not have any problems out of it, but it just felt cheaply made. I know shotguns are not really precision weapons, but the action just felt sloppy. I did not have it very long, and I bought it new. Before I go rid of it, there was already marks on the side of the receiver where the fore grip was rubbing. All that said, I know have 3 870's that I like much better. For the price of an 870 vs a 500, I feel that an 870 is made much better. They feel tighter and more secure. I don't know that they shoot any better, but they just feel better in my hand. It sounds a bit trivial, and I guess it kind of is. However, if you are annoyed by little picky crap like I am, make sure you feel out all your options and go some where that will let you operate the action and mount the gun to you shoulder just to see how they all feel. The 500 I had was a combo model with about a 26-28" ribbed barrel and about a 22-24" slug barrel. I am not sure on those lengths, but it was a 12 ga. The 870s I have are a 12ga super mag turkey model that really serves as my bed side gun. It has a short double bead barrel, I guess about 20". Then I have a 20ga youth model with about a 20" barrel. I don't even have it at my house. My dad has kind of adopted it as his hd gun. The third is a 28ga with about a 26-28" barrel that I just use for doves or shooting clays. Either way, there are plenty of options in either the 870s or 500s, and I am sure you would be well served with either. My final advise would be that regardless of what you get, if you plan for it to kind of be an all around gun, get one with screw in chokes. It give you more options, and options are always good.

For less than $400? I did not know a woodsman could be had for that. I assume you are referring to a Colt Woodsman. My vote would also be a Ruger Mk III. I was doing a little tweeking on the trigger this morning as a matter of fact. I like them stock, but they are also fun to work on and tinker with. The only complaint I have had from other people shooting mine is that they are a little heavy with the bull barrel. It does not bother me, but if weight is an issue, considered the tapered barrels.

I don't know for sure, but I talked to some of the guys at work one day. They were saying that the pilots are usually ex-military, and none of them have anything more than just basic medical training, i.e. they are not nurses or even medics. They only want them to fly and nothing else. I would think that flying for the military, especially in combat zones, would make a person especially desirable for such a position.

Your response should have been, "It's safer than your ride."

I don't care anything about a beauty pageant, even the adult ones. However, I am not going to go ranting and raving over something just because I don't agree with it or get enjoyment out of it. I was really just joking about the beauty pageants. You can try to ban them if you want; I am sure there will be someone to come along shortly in support of them. Obviously, I do not expect you to understand my position on the matter. I just wanted to offer my first hand experience in the industry to say that there are plenty of good people who have made walking horses their livelihood, and I do not believe in trying to shut down a man's business just because there are a few bad apples also in the industry. It is really not that different from the hobby that brings us all to this forum to start with; we all enjoy our guns and we don't want them taken from us because of a few irresponsible idiots.

New Winchester Model 70 XTR Featherweight 30-06
dats82 replied to TN Outlaw's topic in Show and Tell
That is beautiful. I am a admittedly a Ruger fan boy, but I love a model 70. Even the cheap one I had that made in China or wherever shot great. -
Do you have a pet?

I respect that, I am sorry you feel that way. I guess while were at it, we should throw beauty pageants in the mix too. Lol

I guess I will play devil's advocate a little. I used to work in the TWH industry, and I can honestly that this problem is not as wide spread as the media and the humane society would have you to believe. Does it happen? Obviously, but if it were as much of a problem as people think it is, why wouldn't they show a video of more than just this one dude? I am making no excuses for it, I certainly am not condoning the practices, and I am not saying he is the only one doing it. However, there are probably hundreds of thousands of people involved in this industry, and there is a very small minority of people doing this stuff. They should be shut down and prosecuted, but to call for the demise of the entire industry is a little ridiculous. I will just comment on a few things in the video, and again, I am not defending what you see. I would like to point out a few things though. They talk about putting caustic chemicals on the legs and wrapping in plastic; however, you can also put stuff on there like bengay and wrap the leg. Just because you see a horse with their leg wrapped, it does not mean they are being abused. Secondly, they claim they are soring these horses so when the chains hit their legs, it will hurt and cause them to step high. That is partially true, but in the video, they show a horse standing there while they put the chains on. If that horse were sored to the point that it hurt for the chains to touch his leg, do you really think he would just calmly stand there for them to put the chains on? The natural gait of the horse is exaggerated by the weight of the large pad and the chains. On a horse that has not been sored, the only purpose of the increased weight is to cause them to jerk their foot up, and throw it further out in front. These horses wearing the chains and pads are no different than ladies (or maybe some of you) wearing large platform shoes and ankle bracelets. There is a limit to the amount of weight the horse can show with, and the chain weights are like 5-10oz. They are not putting log chains on them or anything. Thirdly, people are talking about the money to be had. Really, there is little money to be gained. For most people, these horses are hobbies and traditions. With that said, a sored horse is worth absolutely nothing when it comes to showing. If these people are really out for the money like people say they are, that is even more reason why they would not sore a horse. Even horses that have been sored in the past and have healed scars, they are not permitted to show. That horse is now no more than an expensive pet. Granted, there are not inspectors at ever single show, but you can bet your ass they will be at the high profile shows that mean anything as far as money goes. Again, I am not defending the actions seen in the video, and I am sure someone will flame me for siding with the owners and trainers. I do not own walking horses, nor are there any owners or trainers in my family. I just want people to know that there are plenty of good people in the industry who do properly care for their animals. Most people in the industry are all about prosecuting those who are abusing animals, but I am also not about jumping on a slippery slope to condemn the entire industry. I have been and will continue to go to the horse shows; however, I do admit that I enjoy the flat shod classes the most. If you don't even understand what that means, I would encourage you to learn a little more about the TWH before you are ready to do away with it all.

If you only have 7-8 acres, I doubt seriously that you be able to make any money at all. Depending on how good the pasture really is, you can only plan on about one animal per 2 acres if you are planning for them to graze, so you are looking at probably only about 3-4 animals. Then you have to think about vaccinations, worming, castration, and transportation to and from the sale. If you have never had cows before, I think you will be amazed at the amount of work required and the tight profit margin. If you have kids, one thing you might consider would be bottle calves to raise for freezer beef. I worked in a dairy for a while, and we would literally give away bottle calves. We had holstein and jersey cows. I think we sold the holstein calves for $50, and the rule was if you bought two holsteins, you had to take a jersey. The jerseys won't be any kind of amazing steaks, but they would do fine for some roast and ground beef. Raising a bottle calf is very time consuming and expensive if you buy milk substitute. You may wish to consider goats as alternatives. I doubt they would be any more profitable or less labor intensive, but at least you can handle goats a little easier than a four or five hundred pound calf.

Who is the "she" who is describing your ultrasound findings? The phrase that comes to mind here is, "common things present commonly." You describe a single cystic lesion found on ultrasound. Testicular cancer is almost never presents as a single cyst lesion. There can be cysts involved with testicular cancer, but it would not typically be one large cyst. Also, you state that presenting symptoms was pain. Only about 10% of testicular cancers present with pain. Therefore, you describe two conditions that are rare for testicular cancer, and you have both of them. This further decreases the likelihood of this being a malignant process. I am not trying to tell you that you absolutely do not have testicular cancer, but I am just trying ease your mind by saying that I think it is lower on the list for a possible diagnosis. I think a more likely diagnosis would be a spermatocele, which are often assymptomatic but can also cause significant pain if they enlarge. They generally arise near the epididymis but can occur around the perimeter of the testicle with the occlusion of one of the small ducts inside the testicle. I wish you well either way. No matter waht it is, pain in that area is never fun.

I can't believe it, She won 200,000 of our taxes
dats82 replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
She could win the freakin' powerball, and she still would not pay her bill. Her lack of money is not the problem, it is her mentality. She thinks she is due this care and treatment as a right. She could have all the money in the world, but would still bitch about having to pay for something that she feels is owed to her. There are plenty of non-illegals that feel the same way. Either way, it is crap. I do not understand how poeple look at ILLEGAL aliens and think they are doing nothing wrong. I guess I am just a cold hearted a-hole, but if we would seperate more families and put more prego women in shackles, then maybe we would see an improvement in the problem. -
How do you mold yours? Looks great btw!

Random Pics From Various Float Trips on the Clinch.
dats82 replied to Timestepper's topic in Hunting and Fishing
Is that river stocked? I have floated the duck and elk a good bit, but the trout are stocked and do not last long after they dump a load. Either way, looks like a great time. If I ever get back up in that area, I'd love to float the Clinch. -

Pointers and lessons learned when starting to carry.
dats82 replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Like others have said, no one is really looking for you to have a gun. I cannot quote exact numbers, but the probablity that you have seen people in public carrying is pretty great. I do not know about you, but I have never noticed anyone carrying unless it was open. So just think about that, you have probably seen countless people carrying, but likely spotted one or none. That is you now. Carry often and carry concealed. The more you carry, the more comfortable it will be. I really often forget I am carrying. I know I am bacause I do it everyday, but now it has become like putting on pants. As for method of carry, I carry IWB at 4-5 about 95% of the time. The holster I use is probably not ideal, but I feel like I could spend a fortune and search a lifetime and still not find the perfect one. It may print a little, but most people will not either (1) look hard enough to discern what it is or (2) make the jump assumption from bump to gun. The only person in over five years who has ever "called" me on carrying is a lady who saw me holster it as I was getting out of my vehicle to go in another building after I had been to the post office. With all this said, my advice would be: 1. Be comfortable- find a holster/gun combo that is comfortable and secure for you to carry. Don't worry about all the crap you hear about which positions are best and all the stuff about keys in this pocket etc. Experiment with all the different setups for you. If you are uncomfortable, you will violate number 2. 2. Be relaxed- don't fidget and act uneasy, it draws attention to you. Not only will it draw attention, but if you are already on edge, you will not be able to respond appropriately if a situation arises. 3. Be confident- even if you do get spotted or called out, know that you are completely in your right. Don't be cocky but be able to stand firm if confronted. -
I have worked on a surgeon's "farm" who had this lining all the walls in the shop. I was amazed at how strong it was. You can hang a tone of crap on it, probably literally. With that, though, it think the reaction is to hang things that did not really need to be hung like hammers and pliers. I like that kind of stuff in chests, but that's just me. I also found the little bins marginally useful. Most places with loose stuff is near a work bench, and you don't have to get those bins too high before you can't see in them. You end up constantly taking them off the wall to look in them. I found that annoying. I will also say that I never saw a piece of it break; it seemed like a durable system. If you are just interested in being able to hang shovels and bicycles and such, I would say it could be useful.
