  1. I've been there too. It is cool for sure. IIRC, when I was there a couple of years ago, I think the owners was telling me it was like 9000 square feet. That sounds crazy, but as you know, it is ridiculously huge. It is definately worth the time to stop by and see if you are in the area.
  2. TMF, Another way to look at it is that the communication between a doctor and patient is crucial. If a patient refuses to answer a question, regardless of how trivial it may seem to them, it would be completely logical for the doctor to be concerned about the patient's honesty or thoroughness in answering other questions. If I have a busy and successful practice, why would I want to waste my time with patients who are not going to be open and truthful with me? This is obviously true for any type of question, not just those involving guns. Personally, I am not a pediatrician or anything, but in the litigiousness society that we live in today, I could see why a pediatrician would what to know about various "dangers" in the home. I could see how an anti-gun malpractice laywer would love to paint a physcian as not taking to reasonable steps to ensure the safety of the patient, i.e. educating the parents on the dangers of children and guns. I will say this, if I remember correctly, the only time that it would be absolutely reasonable to inquire about guns in the home would be in the case of treating a domestic violence victim. Otherwise, from a medical stand point, I don't really see the point, but I also would not be all up in arms if my physcian did ask.
  3. So you don't think the government already knows you own firearms? You are posting in a gun forum, you have probably had a background check for a new gun, and you might have a permit. I completely agree that the government does not need to be involved or know anything else about my life, but this issue just seems to be kind of inflated. If you are worried about answering questions, just tell them no. By the way, when is the linked EMR requirement going into effect? I am completely unaware of such requirement, and I work in medicine. Such a requirement would be in blatant violation of HIPAA laws. Not saying that doesn't mean it won't happen; we all know the government isn't known for following the rules. However, I would think it would cause more of a stir within the medical community.
  4. There are some qualifiers that go with this, but basically, in non-life threatening situations, a doc can refuse to treat any patient for any reason as long as there is not previously established care. The more common practice is that doctors will refuse patients based on insurance status or what insurance you have. If the scenario is that a pt comes in on a first visit with no emergent problems, for whatever reason, the doc has the right to say, "Nope, I don't want this patient in my practice." If care is established, the doc will usually send a certified letter to the patient stating he can no longer provide care to the patient, and they will have 30 days to find a new doctor. Otherwise, it would be considered abandoning the patient, which is very much illegal. Is it unethical? Perhaps, depending on what the decision is based on. Is it illegal? No
  5. I don't understand why this topic gets so much attention. Maybe I am missing something, but what does it matter if your doc asks about it or not? You can answer or not. It has been my experience that the vast majority of docs either don't really care or actually pro-gun themselves. I just don't really understand what the issue is.
  6. Like some of the comments on the story, it is ridiculous that this guy is in jail for a mistake and Eric Holder is free as a bird. I know he is in Mexican custody, so it is not really a parallel.
  7. It seems a little ridiculous to buy a $200 50 round mag JUST to shoot off the bench. Most anybody I have ever seen shooting off a bench is going for precise shots, and magazine capacity is of little consequence. However, to each his own I suppose, and if it works for you, then rock on.
  8. I used to believe in a graduated program and step them down every year, but I am pretty much completely opposed now. Over the past few years, I have been in school, which is primarily located in Kansas City. The school is in a rough area with much government housing. During breaks from class, we would go to the 7-11 to get coffee and whatever. It was all the time that I would encounter people (not my classmates) literally buying Slurpees and ice cream with food stamp cards. First off, you should not be allowed to use food stamps at the 7-11 when there is a discount grocery store around the corner. Secondly, if you are using your food stamps to buy slurpees, you're obviously are not starving. Second example was in Walmart with a hispanic lady in front of me. She had about five items including some hygene products, clothing, cheese, and maybe one piece of fruit. The cashier rang it all up, and she tried to pay with everything with the food stamp card. She did not understand why the card would not pay for her clothes. When the cashier finally explained it to her, she purchased the cheese and whatever the other food item was with the card. To pay for the other items, she pulled out a wad of cash like I had never seen before (I'm a broke student) to peel off a twenty to handle the rest. Her wad of cash was probably large enough to handle my living expenses for a semester; I am certain that, at that time, she really did not need assistance for food. With other examples like I have mentioned above, I have decided that if it is really necessary for such programs to exist, we should switch to only handing out food. By food, I mean rice and beans and maybe some type of canned meat once a week, but I guess the rub lies in that it is easier to buy a vote with a slurpee than a cup of rice.
  9. My wife bought some. I am not sure what the flavor was called or what the proof was, but just drinking it, I was not impressed. I am pretty sure the wine I make has a higher EtOH content, and it tasted like some piss poor hunch punch. Some of the other stuff may be better, but whatever the red fruit stuff was, was not very good.
  10. This... http://www.amazon.com/Alex-Toys-402-SPY-SCOPE/dp/B00000JHV0/ref=pd_sxp_grid_i_0_1 and this... http://www.amazon.com/Silver-Color-Yards-THREE-Rolls/dp/B004XHX3DW/ref=sr_1_9?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1340662808&sr=1-9&keywords=duct+tape I kid of course. Sounds like an interesting idea, and I would be certainly be curious to see what comes up.
  11. If this makes things soooooo much safer now, you would think there would have been at least one person shot while standing in line. All those guns in one place, surely to hell at least one of them just went off and killed someone.
  12. That's kinda funny. My sister had a gun pulled on her in a Denny's bathroom. I am not blaming Denny's or anything; I just thought it was a funny coincidence.
  13. Canoeing has to be one of the most relaxing things I enjoy doing. I would absolutely advise you to get one. If you buy a used one and don't like it, you can probably sell it and not be out any money. I bought an Old Town 14 foot about a year ago. I do not know how much it weighs, and I am really not too sure what it is made of. It is a pretty good all around boat. It is small enough I can handle it by myself (paddling and loading in a truck), but it is also large enough to comfortably carry another person. There are many good options out there, and toward the end of the summer, there will probably be plenty of good deals to be had on used boats. You may also want to consider a kayak if you plan to be on your own most of the time. Most of my friends use kayak, but I prefer the extra room and seat position of a canoe. Either way, keep an eye on Craigslist and golsn.com.
  14. I don't know anything about the movie, but thanks for reminding me of this song...
  15. Second intercostal, midclavicular line BTW, as I am sure you know, much more can be done with large bore needles than just decompressing a pneumo.
  16. I am not looking for a SHTF scenario kit. This is not really for a BOG or for what people think of as survival situations. I am wanting something that I can use to stabilize prior to going to or awaiting transport to a facility. I frequently find myself in situations that the sexy things could be needed if stuff goes wrong. I guess some of such situations could be avoided, but I would also hate to need the sexy things and not have them. To be honest with you, if I could afford an AED, I would carry one of those in my truck too. Obviously, they would not serve much purpose in a SHTF scenario either.
  17. Thanks for the replies. It seems you all have confirmed what I was afraid of, I would be better off putting one together myself. I was just hoping I did not have to invest that much time into it, but I guess that would be better than getting something I regret.
  18. I did a quick search on this and did not really find any threads on it. I have been looking for a kit to keep in my truck that is more advanced than just your general first aid kind of stuff. I have looked on ebay and amazon for some kits, but I can't seem to find one that really fits what I am looking for. I would like to hear what some of you all maybe carrying, and what the pros and cons of your kits are. I know I could put one together with exactly what I want, but before I did all that, I would like to see if I could just buy a complete kit from the start. I am really looking for a kit that is more for the trauma type stuff and am not really interested in having 20 bandaids and neosporin. The type of stuff I would like would be some type of clotting agent, suture kit, betadine, OPA/NPA, pocket mask, compression bandage, chest seal, large bore needles, scissors, etc. I guess to sum it up, I am not really looking for a survival type kit to take on expeditions or anything to treat abrasions and blisters; I am more looking for something to have on hand for the more acute and severe injuries that kill people while you are trying to get to care.
  19. The time I have a knife seems to be inversely proportional to what I pay for it. That being said, my edc for the past few years has been a Kersaw Leek that someone gave to me used. It has been a great one, and I have already decided that when I loose it, I will probably buy another. That is, of course, unless I can find someone to give me another one. I also like the Chive; especially while wearing scrubs. As ya'll probably know, it is the same design, just a little lighter. I had one that I bought, but naturally, I lost that one. So now, it is back to the leek even with the scrubs. For my budget and propensity to loose knives, I think the two aforementioned knives would be my best edc. I like the operation, the size, the price, and materials quality better than any of the other knives I have lost.
  20. Pull Apart Coffee Cake 12-16 frozen yeast rolls 1 cup brown sugar 1 stick of butter 1 pk of cook and serve butter scotch pudding Some nuts if desired Cinnamon In a lightly greased bundt cake pan, sprinkle the desired amount of chopped nuts of choice (I usually use pecans). Then disperse frozen rolls around pan. Sprinkle the pudding powder over rolls. You must use the "cook and serve" variety, then instant pudding mix will not work. In a sauce pan, melt the stick of butter and cup of brown sugar. Once mixed together, pour evenly over the contents of the pan. Then add however much cinnamon you think will suit your taste. Cover lightly with a towel or such and allow to rise on the counter top over night. Depending on how many rolls used, it may rise out of pan. If this happens, push them back flush with the top of the pan. Cover lightly with foil and bake at 350 for 30 minutes. When done, invert the pan onto a shallow dish as there will be juices that run out. It may help to loosen from the side of the pan prior to inversion.
  21. Shooting shot out of a rifled barrel is exactly what anyone with a Taurus Judge is doing. It is not going to hurt it, but like I said, the pattern will be large. Shooting shot out of a smooth slug barrel is essentially no different than shooting shot out of any other conventional barrel, you just would have a set of rifle sights on it verses a bead. Like I said above and as was echoed by bkelm, I would not worry too much about the barrel length for HD. They are all going to have the same effects for all intents and purposes. I would be more worried about having a shorter weapon to be able to maneuver the weapon in tight spaces as in your home. 20" sounds good, but four inches in either dirrection is probably not going to matter in regards to its ballistic performance in your house.
  22. You are right, some are rifled and some are smooth. Most have a set of iron sights on them. I think you could shoot whatever you want one of either of them, but if you shoot shot out of a rifled barrel, your pattern will be huge in a very short distance. It would not be practical at all. As for home defense, I have heard several times that the magical length is 20". I can offer no reason, but people who devote more time to the subject than I say that 20" barrels just perform better for that setting. Idk, I imagine some buckshot out of any length barrel over about 16" would serve its intended purpose within your house. As for not wanting the long shot barrels, I tend to agree with you. My understanding is that you get more range out of a longer barrel, but for most clays, that will not be needed.
  23. Floating the Elk, appropriate summertime pic
  24. That is interesting about the extractors. I guess I never paid that close of attention when I had my mossy. Good to know. I've had to slam the butt of my 870 on the ground to extract a shell, but I've never had one stuck to the point you describe.
  25. I have never worn body armor and really do not know much about it, but why not just have a light vest with any kind of shirt over it. Seems kind of dumb, but I guess if I were a person who would need such an item, 4k for a shirt might seem a little more reasonable.
